March 20th is World Water Day every year. According to a report from the United Nations, more than half of the world's major rivers have serious water loss and are polluted.

The Yellow River, the world's fifth longest river, watered some of the oldest farms  on earth.

1Its source(源头)on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is drying up. In most of the past 35 years, it didn't reach the sea.

The Nile in Egypt, running 6, 650 km, is the longest river in the world.2Now it is down to 2 billion m³ or so. Australia's Murray River reaches the sea only every other year. One fifth of America's Rio Grande has no water, either.

    3

Mostly it’s damming(筑坝)and global warming that make rivers dry.4Now about 45, 000 of them lie across the world’s rivers. They hold back around 15% of the world's fresh water from running to the sea.

5Warmer weather takes water away. The glacier(冰川)are becoming smaller. The source of the Yellow River is drying up because of it. Global warming has had certain effects on water sources. Droughts (干旱) happening around the world make people pay more attention to this fact.

    A. Dams provide fields with water and make power.

    B. How does it happen?

    C. It used to carry 32 billion m³ of water a year.

    D. But now it has a serious problem.

    E. Global warming is making things worse.

Have you watched the recent TV series Three-Body? Adapted(改编)from Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book The Three- Body Problem, the show has impressed audiences with its wonderful visual effects. One of the most exciting scenes must be Operation Guzheng.

In order to find Trisolarans(三体人)messages on a huge ship, an army plans to cut the ship into pieces. They set up many thin strings across the river, which are made from nanomaterial(纳米材料). Looking like guzheng, the strings quietly cut the steel ship into slices as if the ship was soft tofu!

Is it possible to cut steel ships with thin strings in reality? In fact, strings are very good at cutting. For example, an egg slicer uses thin wires to cut eggs into slices. A kite line can easily hurt people if it gets tangled(缠绕)around their necks. This is because the thin strings have a very small contact area(接触面积), leading to a high intensity of pressure when they cut things.

In the TV series, the strings are as thin as a tenth of a human hair. To cut the steel ship, the pressure needs to be 200 MPa, according to the science website Guokr. How strong is that pressure? Imagine an elephant standing on a string! In reality, scientists won’t be able to make such thin strings that wouldn’t easily break, at least for years to come. The cutting will also create lots of heat. We don’t have the material to bear the high temperature while it’s also thin enough to cut through.

But what we have today is called “waterjet cutting(水刀)”. We can cut hard materials such as metal, stone, or glass using a high-pressure jet of water. The water’s speed can reach 1000 meters per second(about three times the speed of sound), and the pressure can be over 400 MPa.

However, the waterjet can only cut things less than 20 centimeters(厘米)thick. That’s still far away from the nanotechnology in the show.

【1】What is the aim of Operation Guzheng in the TV series?

    A.To find a huge ship.

    B.To hunt for Trisolarans.

    C.To reveal(揭露)Trisolarans’ secrets.

    D.To develop nanomaterial.

【2】How does Operation Guzheng get its name?

A.Sounds of Guzheng are used as code.

B.They use strings from Guzheng to contact.

C.There are important messages hidden in a Guzheng.

D.They use Guzheng-like strings to cut a steel ship.

    【3】Paragraph 3 is written to show ________.

A.how thin the strings can be

B.how thin strings can be used to cut things

C.that thin strings can only cut soft things

D.what areas strings can be used in life

【4】What makes Operation Guzheng impossible in reality?

A.Strings can’t be made long enough to go across a river.

B.A steel ship can bear an intensity of pressure of up to 200 MPa.

C.Strings can’t be made as thin as a tenth of a human hair.

D.No string can bear such high pressure and heat as shown in the series.

【5】Why can’t the “waterjet cutting” be used for Operation Guzheng?

A.Because it can’t produce high enough pressure.

B.Because it can’t be used to cut metal.

C.Because the ship is too thick for it to cut.

D.Because the water’s speed is too fast to control.

  • 26、   Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some heroes, like Lucca, are not even human. Lucca is a 12-year-old US Marine Crops (海军陆战队) dog. On April 5, Lucca received an award for her brave military service, during which she lost one of her front legs. Lucca is now retired and lives in California.

Lucca was in London, England, to receive the Dickin Medal from the British charity People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). The organization provides free medical care to the sick and injured pets of people in need. The PDSA calls the Dickin Medal “the highest award any animal in the world can achieve while serving in military conflict (军事冲突)”.

Lucca is the first US Marine Crops dog to receive the medal. She and her owner, Gunnery Willingham, traveled to London, England, for the award ceremony. “Lucca is very intelligent and had an amazing drive for work.” Willingham said.

Lucca was trained to find hidden weapons and explosive devices. She lost one of her legs in an explosion while on patrol (巡逻) in Afghanistan in 2012.

During her six years of active military service in Iraq and Afghanistan, Lucca completed more than 400 missions. She was trained to find hidden weapons and explosive devices. She was so effective on duty that no human troops were killed during any of her patrols.

But Lucca did not escape injury. On March 23, 2012, she was on patrol in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. An explosive device was set off under her. Lucca lost her front left leg right away. She also suffered serious burns on her body.

Lucca is the 66th animals to receive the Dickin Medal since it was introduced in 1943. The award has been given to 30 dogs (including Lucca), 32 World War II messenger pigeons, three horses and one cat.

Marly’s class was studying China. Her teacher, Miss Singh, told the students that kites were invented in China more than 2,000 years ago. “To this day,” she said, “Most Chinese people have a passion for kites. On sunny and windy days, people of all ages go to the parks to fly them.”

Miss Singh explained that Chinese kites are always colorful and are often beautifully decorated to look like dragons, butterflies or other creatures. Then she announced an unusual homework assignment. She asked each student to make a kite and bring it to class. “The Chinese make kites that represent something important to them,” she said. “Each of you should make a kite that signifies something important to you.”

Marly did not like the assignment. “I don’t know how to make a kite,” she grumbled as she walked home. Then she decided to ask her dad for help. Marly explained to Papa that the kite had to mean something to her.

“What do you think of when you see a kite?” Papa asked.

As Marly thought for a moment. Her mind was filled with images of things that flew, such as planes and birds. “Eagles,” she said.

Papa nodded and agreed that an eagle design would make an excellent kite. “They are proud and fierce,” he said.

Marly and Papa got two rods of balsa wood and bound them into the shape of a cross. Papa cut a square out of an old white bed sheet, and Marly painted a great golden eagle on the sheet. Then they stretched the sheet over the rods and made a diamond-shaped (菱形的) kite. Finally, Marly tied a long tail to the bottom of the kite, and it was finished.

Next, Marly and Papa took the kite to the park and tested it. The kite flew perfectly. Marly jerked the string and made the kite swoop so that the eagle dived to the earth and flew back up again.

“Wow, ” Marly cried, “This kite really flies!”
