21、Machu Picchu is an unusual site in Peru and one of the most mysterious wonders of the world. Built at almost 10,000 feet on the top of an Andean mountain, the Incas built hundreds of structures made of stone. A large number of Machu Picchu’s surrounding structures date back to the early 13th century, but it was considered a chief sacred site far before then. The Inca people changed the large site into a very small but wonderful city, completely self-sufficient and hidden from below. Agricultural terraces (梯田) surrounded the entire city, fed by natural spring water, supporting the entire population.
Inca Trail
The trail is one of the most famous in the world and regarded as one of the best. It covers only 26 miles, combining cloud forest, green mountain scenery, forest, and plenty of tunnels, paving stones, and ruins. The four-day hike begins slowly but quickly changes into a difficult journey suitable for those in excellent shape. The trail winds through the Andes, leading alongside and through ruins. Though independent hiking was once permitted, now it must be done with a guide.
Funerary Rock
It is believed that the Funerary Rock at Machu Picchu was used as a place to prepare Inca nobles for preservation, or mummifying (做成木乃伊), a common habit among the tribe. Nobles would be laid out to be mummified by the hot sun and freezing cold nights after their organs were removed. The rock is also famous as a spot from which a view of the city is afforded.
Temple of the Sun
Within the city’s castle, deep within Machu Picchu, is the Temple of the Sun, accessed only by the Emperor and
Inca priests. It means the Inca’s advanced knowledge of religion, weather, and nature, showing the great extent
Incas went to adapt to and learn about nature. Still unbroken, the temple was built to honor the god Inti, who is exactly the sun. The temple was effectively protected. It was also a very important scientific center, built in half-moon shape with openings facing north and east. The windows’ shadows in the center of the temple helped see the start of winter solstice (至日), showing farming season.

22、A hearty laugh means the same thing on every continent: joy.【1】 when we laugh with someone else.
Scientists have found that people around the world can tell whether people are friends or strangers by listening to them laughing together. And the ability is globally owned by people.【2】. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, used a simple experiment. Psychologist Gregory Bryant recorded pairs of college students having conversations. Some were friends.【3】. He then picked out just the parts in which the two people were laughing. Each cut was only about one second long. Then Bryant and his colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles, first had volunteers listen to the records of laughter.【4】. They ran the experiment in 24 societies around the globe, including indigenous tribes (土著部落) in New Guinea, tiny villages in Peru and cities in India and China.
【5】. They were good at telling whether women were friends. But for other pairs — like two men laughing — it was harder. On average, listeners guessed correctly only about 60 percent of the time. Details about what laughter means require cross-cultural studies. Even in the most remote places on Earth, a laugh among friends is a special sound.
A.Laughter does good to you
B.Some hardly knew each other
C.People weren’t perfect at the task
D.But our laughter may reveal more than we realise
E.In other words, it isn’t limited by culture and language
F.So laugh a hearty laugh for at least three times every day
G.Then the volunteers were asked to guess whether the people were friends or strangers
23、In a new move, doctors are using feature films in order to encourage their patients to talk more freely about their problems. Supporters of “film therapy (疗法)” say that discussing characters and plot lines from a proper film can help people to understand their feelings better.
One of those using the method is Bernie Wooder, a doctor from Elstree, who charges £45 for a one-hour “film therapy” session. He said, “I was treating a woman who had been badly let down in a relationship, and who was experiencing such strong feelings that it was difficult for her to speak about them. I told her that her situation reminded me of On the Waterfront, when Marlon Brando's character realizes his brother is dishonest and he feels a great sense of betrayal (背叛). My patient identified so easily with him that she started to cry. Watching and discussing the film
unlocked all the feelings she had buried. Each time she watched and cried, she felt better.”
Mr Wooder admits that film therapy does not work for everyone, but says he has used it successfully with about a third of his clients. “Through the films' characters, plots and even music, it allows people to face their problems.” He said that Falling Down, in which Michael Douglas plays the part of an unemployed man who is so frustrated (沮丧的) that he uses violence, was an example of the dangerous implications (后果) of not letting anger go. “I used this film with a patient who was very upset because he was holding on to a lot of the anger he felt towards people who had frustrated him,” said Mr Wooder. “We talked about Michael Douglas's character and the disastrous path he takes, and my patient then realized that he needed to let go of his feelings more regularly so as not to erupt (爆发) like a time bomb.”
【1】What can we learn about Bernie Wooder?
A. He used to be an actor. B. He likes to review different films.
C. He is good at sharing his feelings. D. He is in support of “film therapy”.
【2】Why did the patient cry when she watched On the Waterfront?
A. She missed her brother. B. She was moved by the film.
C. She realized she had been cheated. D. She thought of her sufferings.
【3】After discussing Falling Down with Mr Wooder, the patient decided to _____.
A. let go of his anger B. stop his acts of violence
C. forget those who hurt him D. learn from Michael Douglas

C. Watching films can help you relax.
D. The public should pay more attention to films.
24、As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands of the cultivated (培育的) meat is rising. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes (替代品), none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, a food-tech company created real dairy products (奶制品) without harming a single cow or the planet.
The company stresses that their product produced in the lab is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. And it is very healthy. The company also says that the lab-produced milk tastes the same as the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Our company was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not a choice,” John said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destroying our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable (可持续的) anymore.”
The environmental price tag of dairy farming is too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as pollute the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure (粪肥) and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. The production uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms.
