A young boy recently received an unexpected message in the mail from his father Joseph, who died two years ago.

Rowan's dad was a hardworking man who wanted to give his son the best life he could. It was why Rowan's mother, Julie Van Stone, said Joseph joined the Navy and went to MIT to get two masters degrees.

While at school in Boston, he would often write to Rowan. Even when he left school and was driving back to Colorado, he would send postcards from each state he stopped in. Those postcards were sent in 2007. "I remember him saying he had sent 5 or 6, and I only got 3 or 4 in the mail. But I never thought anything of it," Van Stone said.

Those postcards and pictures are priceless memories for Van Stone and her son, especially after Joseph passed away from a rare brain disease. Rowan never had a chance to say goodbye. But, on Saturday, just days before the two-year anniversary of Joseph's death, a postcard arrived in the mail. It arrived March 11, 2015. The message read: "Hello from Pennsylvania. I love you, and I miss you so much. See you soon. Love, Daddy."

Neither he nor his mother knows how it happened, and they may never know. But, they have their own ideas why. "I feel like that was the final goodbye that he didn't get to say," Van Stone said. Van Stone says Joseph's last words to her before he died were: "Everything is a circle. We will see each other again. All that matters is love."

【1】What did Rowan’s dad do to give his son the best life?

    A. He bought many for Julie.

    B. He became a soldier in Navy.

    C. He kept writing to his son.

    D. He got many masters degrees.

【2】 How long did it take for the postcard to reach Rowan?

    A. 2 years. B. 5 years. C. 6 years.   D. 8 years.

【3】 Where did Rowan’s dad send the postcard?

    A. In Boston.     B. In Colorada

    B. In Pennsylvania  D. In New York

  • 23、   More than a year into the pandemic of Covid-19, many people have grown used to a new lock-down lifestyle:keeping indoors, exercising less and eating more. “All of these contribute to worsening gut(消化道)function,"says Christopher Andrews, the lead physician at the Calgary Gut Motility Center, adding that heartburn is on the rise.

Heartburn is the painful effect of the stomach's acid creeping into the esophagus(食管). Diet is the greatest contributor: acidic foods such as grapefruits, hot sauce or coffee increase the amount of acid in your stomach, while chocolate, alcohol and high-fat foods result in loosened sphincter muscle. If that muscle weakens or is unable to close completely, stomach acid might arise, causing the heartburn. Spicy food can also increase uncomfortable feelings in the gut.

Heartburn occurs in bodies of all sizes, ages and genders, but researchers have found that overweight (超重的)people are two to three times more likely to experience frequent heartburn than those with a healthy weight. This may be because of the increased pressure on the gut, which can push stomach acid up. Changes in diet, such as the recent tendency for people to turn to comfort food in lock-down, can also lead to the problem.

Occasional heartburn isn't a problem, but experiences of frequent indigestion should push you to live a healthier life. According to a recent study of 9,000 heartburn patients, following a five-step health plan-maintaining a proper body weight, eating well, exercising, not smoking and limiting coffee or tea-can decrease symptoms (症状)by 40 per cent. Andrews also tells his patients to avoid eating close to bedtime, “If you lie down when your stomach is full, it's much easier for things to come up."

Though heartburn is currently on the rise, Andrews believes the increase is short-term. “Once life comes back to normal, I'm sure things will get better,” he says.

【1】Which of the following is the main cause of heartburn?

    A.Staying home.

    B.The pandemic.

    C.Unsuitable diet.

    D.Less exercise.

【2】What can we learn about heartburn from paragraph 3?

A.Overweight people are at greater risk.

B.Stomach upsets will lead to heartburn.

C.Comfort food can help improve the situation.

D.Stomach acid will put more pressure on the gut.

【3】What's the writer's suggestion for relieving heartburn?

    A.Getting enough sleep.

    B.Saying no to tea.

    C.Consuming less coffee.

    D.Having a medical checkup.

【4】What's the purpose of the text?

A.To inform us of a health problem.

B.To warn us of a worsening situation.

C.To recommend a way of losing weight.

    D.To introduce a new lock-down lifestyle.

  • 24、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

What Your “Age” Says About You

Imagine, for a moment, that you had no birth certificate and your age was simply based  on  the way you feel inside. How old would you say you are?

Like your height or shoe size, the number of years that have passed since you first entered the world is an unchangeable fact. 1

Scientists are increasingly interested in this quality. They are finding that our “subjective  age” may be essential for understanding the reasons why some people appear to be energetic as they grow old — while others fade.

2 It is now well accepted that people tend to mature as they get older, becoming less extroverted ( ) and less open to new experiences. These personality changes are often considered more obvious in the people with older subjective ages.

However, those who feel younger than they really are also become more reliable and less neurotic ( ) as they gain the wisdom that comes with greater life experience. But it doesn’t come at the cost of the energy and vigor of youth. It’s not true that having a lower subjective age leaves us frozen in a state of permanent immaturity.

Feeling younger than your years also seems to come with a lower risk of depression and greater  mental  wellbeing as  we age. 3 Most people felt about eight years younger than their actual chronological age (实际年龄). But some felt they had aged — and the consequences were serious. Feeling between 8 and 13 years older than your actual age resulted in an 18-25% greater risk of death over the study periods, and greater disease burden — even when you control for other demographic ( ) factors such as education, race or marital status.

4 However old you really are, it’s worth questioning whether any of those limitations are coming from the within.

A.It also means better physical health.

B.One of the most interesting aspects of the research has explored how subjective age interacts with our personality.

C.Some studies have explored the potential physical consequences of this difference.

D.These findings can give us all a view of the way our own brains and bodies endure the passing of time.

E.But everyday experience suggests that people often don’t experience ageing the same way.

F.Many researchers are now trying to study how this knowledge might help us live longer.

  • 25、Last year, hundreds of people spent good money on an experience that they knew would include crowds, discomfort and danger. Many would become ______, due to the extreme cold and low air pressure, and a few would even lose their ______. Yet, despite all this, by the end of the trip many were already planning to ______. For these people, climbing Qomolangma is an experience like no other, making some feel weak and others, ______.

British mountain climber George Mallory wrote of climbing Qomolangma, “What we get from this ______ is just sheer joy... We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to ______ life. That is what life means and what life is for.” ______, Mallory would die on the mountain in 1924, although his body would not be found until many years later.

In 2011, words ______ to those of Mallory were spoken by American mountain climber Alan Arnette, who climbed Qomolangma in that year and was going to climb other high mountains around the world. “It brings into ______ what’s important to you.” He added. “There are a thousand reasons to ______ and only one to keep going. You really have to focus on the one reason that’s most important and ______ to you. It forces you to look deep inside yourself and figure out if you really have the physical, as well as mental, toughness to ______ when you want to stop.”

Psychologist Frank Farley has spent years studying people who jump out of planes and drive fast cars, as well as those who climb Qomolangma. He referred to the ______ of these people as “Type T”, with the “T” standing for “thrill”.

Speaking to the LA Times about the “Type T” personalities, Farley said, “They don’t want to die and they don’t expect to die. “Research also suggests that our ______ to seek risks can be connected to how much we expect to benefit from the result. With this in mind, are the benefits of climbing Qomolangma worth the ______? It’s totally up to you.
