  • 22、If you don't want people to know too much about you, then you had better keep your fridge contents secret according to a British market research document released last week.

Researchers peered(凝视) into the fridges of 400 people in Britain and compared the contents with the owners' lifestyles.

They say those people can be divided into five categories: nutrition nerds (no social sense), food faddiest (whatever's in style), martyr mums, fast food fanatics and restaurant regulars.

Nutrition nerds care much about what they put into their bodies. Their fridges are filled with fruit, vegetables and healthy meat.

People in this category tend to be highly organized and usually work in law or accountancy. The vast majority is single, but if they have a partner, that person will be similar.

A fridge full of vitamins-enriched juices implies its owner works in media or fashion. They tend not to eat the foods they buy. Known as the food faddies, they just want to be seen as purchasing the latest important things.

A fridge full of everything from steak to frozen fish suggests the martyr mum. Her fridge tends to be stocked with every kind of product, except what she herself would want.

This fridge suggests difficulty balancing family and work life. Fast food fanatics always buy mineral water for soda pop; the nearest they will get to fresh fruit is tomato sauce. Their fridges hint(暗示) at someone who works hard and plays hard. Also, someone who is not into long term planning.

Finally, a fridge filled with nothing more than a bottle of white wine and some sparkling mineral water implies an owner who is single, lives in a big city and enjoys the finer things in life. The fridge is empty because this person regularly eats in restaurants.

1We can know from the first two paragraphs that  .

    A. some researchers are fond of staring at other people's fridges

    B. people don't want others to know about their secrets

    C. the food you put in the fridge has something to do with your character

    D. there are mainly five kinds of lifestyles among British people

2According to the passage, people who belong to food faddiest  .

    A. don't care much about money when buying things

    B. will try their best to stay healthy

    C. often stay up late to finish their job

    D. prefer to ask others about what to do next

3What will those who often eat out put in the fridge?

    A. All kinds of food they like.   B. Only something to drink.

    C. Fruit, vegetables and meat.   D. Food rich in vitamins.

4What might be the most suitable title for the text?

    A. Keep your fridge a secret   B. You are what's in your fridge

    C. What to put in the fridge   D. Be careful about your fridge

  • 23、How did the sea horse get its name? It's not hard to guess. The top half of this fish looks like a small horse. But looking at the sea horse's tail, you might think "sea monkey" is a better name. Then there's the sea horse's pouch(口袋). "Sea kangaroo" might also be a good name for this fish.

Sea horse live in warm ocean waters all over the world. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to match their surroundings(环境). A sea horse in one place for hours at a time by winding its tail around a plant. It feeds on live food, such as small shrimp(虾). For a fish that doesn't move around much, the sea horse eats a lot-- in just one day, a sea horse can eat 3,000 shrimp!

A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, and it's the male(雄性的) sea horse that gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horse start out as eggs, which come from the female's(雌性的) body. The male carries the eggs in its pouch for about three weeks until they hatch(孵化). Soon after the babies are born, the female gives her mate a new set of eggs.

Sadly, the number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and sold as aquarium(水族馆) fish. This really is not a good idea because most sea horses don't live long in aquarium. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean.

  • 24、   Even for a first-time visitor to China, it is impossible to ignore the popularity of Quick-Response (QR) codes. These square-shaped black-and-white symbols in WeChat or Alipay where QR codes are scanned to add new friends or make payments.

The QR Code system originated in Japan. The engineer Masahiro Hara felt the limitation of the one-dimension barcode in use and thus developed the QR codes which could carry data horizontally and vertically. QR codes could hold much more information than barcode due to their extra dimension. In addition, QR codes have larger data capacity, smaller print—out size and higher resistance to dirt and damage, which make them widely applied in many other applications.

Though the technology of QR codes is complicated, we can easily create our own QR codes with the help of QR code generators, many of which are available online for free. Users could enter the data they wish the QR code to display, and the generator turns it into a symbol that can be printed or displayed in electronic form. The process of creating QR codes could be really fun when we customise the design of the codes according to our specific needs. For instance, we can adjust the color, add a logo, and create social options etc. Moreover, dynamic (动态的) QR codes are also available. They are more various than standard QR codes because they allow users to edit data entered previously whereas data in standard QR codes cannot be edited once printed. Plus, don’t limit your QR code to one mobile scanner. Anyone can scan your code with any reader. A lower barrier to entry makes success more likely for you and the user.

Meanwhile, we must also recognize the vulnerability of QR codes. Due to its easy access, criminals can steal simply by replacing the QR codes with their own, routing cash into their own bank accounts. Hence, we should all become more conscious towards virtual money transactions through QR codes and participate in additional security measures.

1Which of the following is NOT a function of QR codes?

    A. Data storage.

    B. Scanning reader.

    C. Social networking.

    D. Mobile payment.

2Why is barcode mentioned in paragraph 2?

    A. To introduce the main topic.

    B. To show the author’s attitude.

    C. To highlight the features of QR codes.

    D. To add some background knowledge.

3Which of the following best explains “vulnerability” underlined in paragraph 4?

    A. Threat. B. Weakness.

    C. Difficulty. D. Simplicity.

4Which is true about QR codes according to the text?

    A. They were first used in China.

    B. The generators charge the users a lot.

    C. Data editing is possible in printed QR codes.

    D. More scanning devices are available in reading QR codes.
