  • 21、Abandoned Amusement Parks Around the World

There are some abandoned amusement parks worldwide. Join us for a look at some of our interests!

    Joyland

This amusement park was once the largest theme park in central Kansas. It featured a wooden roller coaster (过山车). It operated for 55 years but closed in 2004 due to financial troubles. Temporarily reopened in 2006, but it only lasted one season. Since then, it’s been destroyed and the roller coaster got stolen.

    Okpo Land

Located on the Geoje Island of ROK, this park has all the makings of a horror movie. One of the park’s main attractions was a duck-themed roller coaster. It’s known to have caused at least one serious accident in the late 1990s. After that, It was closed. In 2011, the park was completely pulled down and a hotel is to be built there.

    Jungle Habitat

This animal park opened in 1972. Tourists could slowly drive their vehicles along the special roadways as wild animals freely wandered about. It was closed in 1976 due to several problems. Dangerous animals reportedly escaped or injured visitors, and locals hated the traffics. Plus, competition from other parks, combined with poor management, may also have contributed to the ending. It’s been for public land use such as hiking and biking trails, so there isn’t much left of the old park.

    Six Flags New Orleans

The Six Flags company bought the park in 2002. A water park was in the works, but then Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 and the park has been closed since then. It is currently owned by New Orleans. There is a talk of transforming it into a shopping mall later.

  • 23、One evening, a man was on his way home when he saw a woman come by, hauling a cart full of flowers. The smell of her flowers perfumed the air with sweetness so easily that it seemed to lift his spirits. He had never experienced such wonder from the flowers of his own garden. "How much must I pay for your wonderful flowers?" he asked. "Take what you wish for." "What return must I make for them?" he asked again. "Your gratitude is enough." She said. So he filled his arms with flowers and hurried joyfully home. His wife and children also liked the remarkable flowers, for they, too, discovered that the sight of

them was a delight and the smell of them refreshed the soul.

In order not to lose his treasure. the man planted the flowers in his garden. Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautiful and they still performed their powerful magic. When his children came to play in the yard, the man cautioned them against carelessness and wild play in case they damage the flowers. But the flowers remained hardy and strong as long as there are enough sun and moisture to nourish them.

As the family grew and more children came to play in the garden, the man was even more concerned about his remarkable flowers. He even built a high wall to protect them with the utmost care. Unfortunately, this began to cause consternation among the family members. If the children caused their father stress, he would refuse them access to the flowers. Later, he set up rules as to who could enter the garden and what they must do while they were there. He also established offices to determine accessibility. Eventually, it became necessary to have lawyers to defend, judges to weigh, guards to safeguard.

  • 24、   Unluckily, there are some rules that teenagers should be allowed to learn in school, but not. They are important to teenagers, although not all of them have to do with their subjects.

Rule 1: Life is not fair. Try to learn to get used to it. Many people won’t understand the real meaning of this rule until they’ve failed to find fairness again and again.

Rule 2: The real world won’t care about you as much as your school does. It will expect you to learn to understand the real world after you leave school. Then you’ll be sure of what to do with real world.

Rule 3: If you think your teacher is terrible, wait until you get a boss. Your boss won’t ask how you feel about your work and will never give you more care or help. He’ll only care about how much money you can help him earn.

Rule 4: TV is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom (情景喜剧). Your problems won’t be solved in 30 or 45 minutes. In real life, people usually have to leave the coffee stores to look for jobs.

Rule 5: Smoking does not make you look cool. Instead, it makes you look moronic (低能的). At the same time, purple hair and pierced body parts make you look like a silly kid. A grown-up teenager should know how to be smart.

1How will the real world treat teenagers when they leave school?

A.It’ll care about them as their schools do.

B.It’ll tell them what it’s really like.

C.It’ll give them more help and chances.

D.It’ll explain to them how to be smart.

2What does the underlined word “earn” mean in Chinese?

    A.挣钱 B.拯救 C.花费 D.浪费

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

B.For teenagers, life is like a sitcom and it’s always full of joy and surprises.

C.Smoking should not be allowed when you are a teenager at school.

D.Teenagers will meet fair bosses when they go to work.

4What can we infer (推测) from the passage?

B.No teenagers can really understand the real world.

C.Almost all teenagers won’t be able to get used to the future life.
