二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Odland remembers like it was yesterday working in an expensive French restaurant in Denver. The ice cream he was serving fell onto the white dress of a rich and important woman.

Thirty years have passed, but Odland can not get the memory out of his mind, nor the woman’s kind reaction. She was shocked, regained calmness and, in a kind voice, told the young Odland. “It is OK. It wasn’t your fault.” When she left the restaurant, she also left the future Fortune 500 CEO with a life lesson: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats the waiter.

Odland isn’t the only CEO to have made this discovery. Instead, it seems to be one of those few laws of the land that every CEO learns on the way up. It’s hard to get a dozen CEOs to agree about anything, but most agree with the Waiter Rule. They say how others treat the CEO says nothing. But how others treat the waiter is like a window into the soul.

Watch out for anyone who pulls out the power card to say something like, “I could buy this place and fire you,” or “I know the owner and I could have you fired.” Those who say such things have shown more about their character than about their wealth and power.

The CEO who came up with it, or at least first wrote it down, is Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson. He wrote a best-selling book called Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management. “A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person,” Swanson says. “I will never offer a job to the person who is sweet to the boss but turns rude to someone cleaning the tables.”

【1】What happened after Odland dropped the ice cream onto the woman’s dress?

    A. He was fired.

    B. He was blamed.

    C. The woman comforted him.

    D. The woman left the restaurant at once.

【2】Odland learned one of his life lessons from .

    A. his experience as a waiter

    B. the advice given by the CEOs

    C. an article in Fortune

    D. an interesting best-selling book

【3】According to the text, most CEOs have the same opinion about ________.

    A. Fortune 500 companies B. the Management Rules

    C. Swanson’s book D. the Waiter Rule

【4】From the text we can learn that ________.

    A. one should be nicer to important people

    B. CEOs often show their power before others

    C. one should respect others no matter who they are

    D. CEOs often have meals in expensive restaurants

  • 22、   Kyle is my big brother. For eighteen years, I felt that Kyle was my enemy. In fact, I found it ridiculous that people thought older brothers looked out for their sisters, protected them and fought off their sisters' bullies. Huh? My brother was the bully (持强凌弱者).

When we were little, his fights with others caused my only black eye, cuts in my lips and even a nosebleed or two. I often wished I were an only child!

Time flew. We ended up attending colleges two thousand miles apart. Yet, strangely, that was when we began communicating. Through e-mail, we kept in constant touch. Mostly I complained about serious homesickness, impossible roommates, difficult classes, and…dating. I felt I lost myself. At a particularly low time, I cried to Kyle about my injured confidence, my broken heart, and the particular jerk (蠢人) who broke it.

And that was when the package arrived.

“What’s this?” I thought as I tore into it. The box revealed a sweatshirt. “Phi Delta Theta? That’s Kyle’s frat (兄弟会).” Kyle was the president of the frat house. Why would he send this? I put it aside and dug deeper. A pile of letters. And they were all addressed to me. I opened the one on top.

“Katrina,” it said, “your brother showed me your picture and I think you're awesome and beautiful.” I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, sure.” I opened another letter. And another. Eighteen in all.

Each one was from a different guy. They complimented (恭维) me. They invited me on dates. And they tried to convince me to make a trip out to Knox College and meet them.

I loved it. I didn’t care about the motive. And mostly, I loved the idea that my big brother had pulled off. I picked up the phone

“Kyle, the box came and I can’t believe what you did.” But Kyle wasn’t accepting compliments. “Oh,” he said, “I was just tired of reading your complaints.”

Big brothers, I decided, really did protect their sisters. And mine fought off the biggest bully I’d ever met. Now I return to my true self, full of confidence.

1Why did the author use to call Kyle her enemy?

A.He had many fights with her.

B.He couldn’t fight off her bullies.

C.He bullied her from time to time.

D.His fights caused her to suffer a lot.

2Why did the frat guys write to the author?

A.They had mercy on her. B.They tried to cheer her up.

C.They were struck by her beauty. D.They wanted to compliment her.

3What's the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

    A.To share her childhood experience.

B.To complain about her biggest bully.

C.To show her brother’s protection for her.

D.To introduce her adjustment to college life.

  • 23、   Students at Summer Creek and Kingwood Park High schools have joined a project called “Students Helping Veterans (退伍军人) : Big Heroes, Tiny Homes” over the past school year.

The high school’s students and teachers partnered together to create a tiny home community in the Houston area, for homeless veterans. Generous local community donations helped fund the project. Besides, the schools collaborate with architects, engineers and other community partners in the local community to design and build homes expected to be 200 to 300 square feet in size. They eventually want to build a community where veterans can be surrounded by other veteran neighbors who understand and relate to their difficulties and issues when coming back to civilian life.

As a team, the students attend regular meetings together to work on the design. They are motivated by the purpose behind the project which keeps them focusing on the tasks at hand. With every nail that goes in, they know that they are improving a veteran's life and providing him a secure home where he can spend his golden years. "The kids are doing something for someone without any reward except knowing they are doing it for someone," said Missy Tayler, their proud teacher.

"They wanted to serve their country and protect us, and they came back but they didn't get the same treatment," said senior student Sarah Dalby, describing her motivation to help. She added that when she started the project, she barely knew how to use a saw but she is a fast learner and loves the work. “You have to appreciate the armed forces of our country for giving us the individual liberties that we enjoy,” senior student, Nicolas Logan said when explaining his own motivation to participate in the project.

  • 24、   Many languages are disappearing and languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over. Yet Maori promises to have a rosy future given that New Zealanders are showing great enthusiasm for speaking this local language

A "Maori renaissance(复兴)”blossomed in the 1970s as language activists championed their cause and Maori fought for greater political power. But until 2013, just 3.7 percent of New Zealanders spoke the language fluently, and many predicted it would soon die out. Now New Zealand's government is erasing prejudice and struggling to increase the percent of population who can speak basic Maori by 2040 to 20.Prime Minister Jacinda Ardem said last month that her newborn daughter would learn both Maori and English. “It's an official language, so why should we dismiss its universal availability and its much more common use?” said Ms.Ardem, adding that she also planned to study the language. Grassroots are also spreading it by word of mouth Answering the phone with the greeting"kiaora"(hello)or ending an email withunga mihi'(thanks)has become a fashion. Maori is gradually becoming part of New Zealand 's mainstream popular culture.

    C. By applying famous sayings. D. By offering good tips.

    B. There will be 20% fluent Maori speakers by 2040.

    C. Ardem is openly supportive of learning Maori .

    D. People withdraw from the act of speaking Maori.

3What can we know about Ajit Kumar Samah?
