二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C. Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reflex, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”

In a moment, I realized what I had done. I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be. I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re- awakened my belief in humility (谦恭), even though I’d lost it for a moment.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in the U.S. at the age of 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, serious-minded mother. Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other humble jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice (偏见). I remember a time, at age 17 — I worked as a waiter, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. I have also witnessed the same treatment of my family and friends, so I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets of Washington, D.C., cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open. By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson.

【1】We can learn from the first two paragraphs that _.

A.the author was a native American

B.the blind woman needed the money badly

C.the author was as poor as the blind woman

D.the author regretted his act of prejudice

【2】According to Paragraph 4, hearing the father’s words, the author was probably _.

    A.rather hurt

    B.very excited

    C.greatly inspired

    D.deeply moved

【3】Which opinion does the author agree with?

A.One should try to experience different kinds of life.

B.One should think about one’s past as often as possible.

C.One should treat others equally with love and respect.

D.One should be nice to the elderly and the disabled.

【4】Why does the author say he is thankful to the blind woman at the end of the passage?

A.She has made him value what he has right now.

B.She has reminded him of the past experiences.

C.He has got a chance to think about his past and future because of her.

D.He has regained his belief in humility with her help.

【5】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.How my dream comes true

B.A priceless lesson in the street

C.A Belief that will never change

    D.Learn from your past

  • 22、It's hard to believe that men and women who grow up together in the same community can end up speaking different languages, but for Ubang's people in Nigeria, it's totally true. It's not exactly clear how many words in the men's and women's languages are different, but there are enough examples to make sentences sound different when spoken by men and women. For example, for “clothing”, men use the word “nki”, while women say “ariga”;“kitchi” means “a tree” for men, while women say “okweng”. These are not just pronunciation differences, but totally different words.

Interestingly, both men and women are able to understand each other perfectly in Ubang, as both boys and girls grow up around their parents and get to learn both languages, but by the age of 10, boys are expected to speak in the male tongue. “There is a stage the male will reach and he discovers he is not using his rightful language,” Chief Oliver Ibang said. “Nobody will tell him he should change to the male language. When he starts speaking the men's language, you know the maturity (成熟) is coming into him.”

No one really knows how or why the dual-language (双语的) tradition of Ubang began, but most locals prefer the religious theory (学说). Chi Chi Undie says the different languages between men and women are rarely seen,

Today, as English words continue to enter the vocabulary of young people in Nigeria, Ubang's two languages are in danger of being lost forever. Neither the male nor the female language is written down, so they both rely on young people to pass them down to the next generation.

【1】Why does the author mention the examples in the first paragraph?

A.To tell the writing differences between the two languages.

B.To show that the two languages are indeed different.

C.To stress the difficulty of learning the two languages.

D.To explain why men and women use different languages.

【2】What can we learn from Oliver Ibang's words?

A.Boys start to speak the male language earlier than girls.

B.Speaking in the male tongue is a sign of boys' growing up.

C.Using incorrect language is considered impolite in Ubang,

D.Boys are forced to speak in the male tongue at the age of 10.

【3】What do we know about Ubang s dual-language?

A.Its origin has been known to us.

B.It has disappeared for many reasons.

C.It is less used by the young than before.

D.Its words are similar to English words.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.The tradition of dual-language in Ubang

    B.The English language entering Ubang

C.The development of men's language in Ubang

    D.The disappearance of Ubang' s dual-language

  • 23、When you think of the Arctic, you imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Others imagine it as the last really clean place left on earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish. “And now”, CNN says, “It's the Arctic's turn.”

German scientists have recently found microplastics (微塑料) in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1800 pieces of microplastics per liter of snow.

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, “It's clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air.” They fall off the plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in.

Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the WHO. We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk.

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Earlier research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, hurting ecosystems along the way. They start in our wastewater, then flow into rivers and out to the sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're eating the plastic as well.

【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.The Arctic has been polluted by plastic rubbish

B.The Arctic is an icy land of pure white snow.

C.The Arctic is a beautiful icy land with clean air.

D.The Arctic is the last rally clean place left on earth

【2】Where do most of the microplatics in the snow come from?

    A.From water.

    B.From air.

    C.From wind.

    D.From food.

【3】What does the underlined expression mean in the fourth paragraph?

    A.Reduce.

    B.Donate.

    C.Cause.

    D.Help.

【4】How does the writer end this passage?

A.By advising us to drink clean water.

B.By asking people not to eat sea animals.

C.By showing the beauty of Arctic.

D.By telling the seriousness of plastic pollution.

  • 24、Cycling in cities with proper biking infrastructure(基础设施) can give people a closer experience of traveling around a place that cars and buses simply can’t. Here are four cycle-friendly cities around the world.

    Utrecht, Netherlands

While the Netherlands’most populous city, Amsterdam, is definitely bike friendly, we’re heading southeast to Utrecht, a city that has a fair claim to being the globe’s most pro-two-wheel destination. In its center, up to 50% of all journeys take place by bike and local authorities are building a 12,500-space cycle parking facility advertised as the world’s biggest. Copenhagen, Denmark

More than half the locals in the Danish capital cycle to work or school, and with an estimated bike population of 650,000 there are slightly more cycles than people. City leaders determine not just on increasing bike use further, but promoting safe bike infrastructure that features bike lanes(车道) of up to three meters in width.

    Berlin, Germany

Germany has been quietly getting on with boosting bike use in many of its cities. Berlin is the standout example. About 13% of all trips in the city are made by bike, nearly twice the rate of 20 years ago.

    Tokyo, Japan

In this vast capital city, an amazing 14% of all trips are made by bike. There are practical reasons why many Tokyo residents prefer a bike to a car for shorter journeys. Before you can even buy a car in the city you must prove you possess a (are and usually expensive) off-street parking spot. However, few people cycle to work-distances tend to be long and public transport is hugely efficient. Also, a lot of cycling takes place-legally-on footpaths and sidewalks.

    【1】What is special about Utrecht?

A.It has a much larger population than Amsterdam.

B.It is the only cycle-friendly city in Netherlands.

C.Cycling accounts for about half of trips downtown.

    D.It has the world’s largest non-cycling population.

【2】Which city takes security into consideration when building bike infrastructure?

    A.Utrecht

    B.Copenhagen

    C.Berlin

    D.Tokyo

【3】Why do some citizens in Tokyo have a preference for a bicycle?

A.They prefer to travel long distances by bike.

B.They are not allowed to cycle on sidewalks.

C.They have no easy access to buses or trains.

    D.They probably can’t afford a parking place.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was sorting through old photos with my mother, looking for a specific picture of my father. I’d recently gotten a scanner and was in the process of digitizing our family pictures.

“Where on earth is that picture of Mumpsy and Dad?” I asked. I’d seen the picture in a frame at my grandma Virgie’s house when I was a child. It showed my father as a boy, in a suit, holding his beloved Boston terrier (波士顿狗), Mumpsy. It was one of my favorite pictures of him, and the only one I hadn’t found yet.

“Maybe Jean has it,” said Mom. “We could ask her.”

I looked at Mom as if she had three eyes. She could not be serious!

Grandma Virgie had had two sons, Dad and Uncle Ralph, who was married to Jean. Mom and Jean had always had a difficult relationship. Jean would say mean and unfavorable things to Mom while Mom tried to rise above it. Grandma Virgie wanted to help but there wasn’t much she could do. After Grandma passed away, Uncle Ralph’s family stayed in the house and took care of what Grandma left. My parents bought a new house and we moved out. As Mom and Aunt Jean was not on good terms, they purposely broke contact with each other.

With that, any connection we had with Uncle Ralph and Aunt Jean fell apart, and our big family split in two. Both my dad and my uncle were dead now. Mom and I had no contact with Jean.

Yet here was Mom, proposing to reach out to Jean nearly 30 years later.

“I’m in my eighties,” Mom said with a shrug. “Jean’s just a little younger. Neither of us has many years left. Why not give it a try?”

    I couldn’t argue with that.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Mom looked up Jean in the dusty phonebook and decided to call her.
