21、According to archaeological evidence, at least 5, 000 years ago, and long before the rise of the.Roman Empire, the Babylonians began to measure time, introducing calendars mainly to regulate planting and harvesting. They based their calendars on the cycles of the sun and the moon. Before the invention of artificial light, the moon had greater social impact. For those living near the equator in particular, its changes were more noticeable than the passing of the seasons. So the calendars that were developed at lower latitudes were influenced more by the lunar cycle than by the solar year. In more northern areas, however, where seasonal agriculture was practiced, the solar year became more vital.
Centuries before the Roman Empire, the Egyptians had developed a calendar having twelve months of thirty days, with five days added to approximate to the solar year. They divided the day into twelve temporal or seasonal hours. A temporal hour was one twelfth of the time from sunrise to sunset. Similarly, they divided the night into twelve hours from sunset to sunrise. These periods became known as temporal hours because their duration varied according to the changing length of days and nights with the passing of the seasons. In the daytime, summer hours were long, and winter ones short. Temporal hours, which were first adopted by the Greeks and then the Romans, who spread them through Europe, remained in use for more than 2,500 years.
In order to track temporal hours during the day, inventors created sundials(日晷). To keep time during the night, inventors designed another time keeping instrument called the water clock. One of the first water clocks was a basin with a small hole near the bottom through which the water fell in drops. The falling water level showed the passing hour as it dipped below hour lines cut on the inner surface. Although these instruments performed satisfactorily around the Mediterranean, they could not always be depended on in the cloudy and often freezing weather of northern Europe. As a result, generations of inventors put their efforts into designing all-weather, more accurate timekeeping instruments.

22、 If Albuquerque Police Officer Ryan Holets had his way, this story would never have got so much attention. CNN would not have learned that Holets, while on duty, had agreed to adopt a baby from a homeless drug addict.
Holets values his privacy and didn’t do it for the attention. He did it just because he knew it was the right thing to do.
On Sept. 23, Holets responded to a call about a possible theft from a convenience store in Albuquerque. By the time he arrived, the thief was no longer there, but Holets spotted a woman in a grassy area behind the store about to inject a needle into her companion’s arm. The woman, Crystal Champ, was eight months pregnant.
After a short conversation, he learned Champ longed for her child to go to a good family. Holets offered to do just that.
When Sergeant Jim Edison learned what Holets did, he was floored. In his 10 years as a police officer, he has seen many “heroic acts” but none like what Holets did, Edison said.
Edison awarded Holets for his outstanding service for the city, but felt that wasn’t enough. It’s his job to reward his officers and encourage them to do the right thing, so Edison signed Holets up to do an interview for CNN’s “Beyond the Call of Duty”series without telling him.
“Every day Edison calls me to ask for forgiveness.” Holets said laughing, “And I keep assuring him that we're fine. We didn’t quite realize it would get this response, and neither did he. But we all realize it’s a really good thing, and some really good things can come of it.”
One of Holets’s conditions when he agreed to CNN’s interview was that his superiors would not set up a GoFundMe page for his family. “We don’t want anybody to say we've used this occasion to enrich ourselves,” Holets said. He instead urges those who want to offer support to donate to a local drug recovery center or adoption organization.
【1】What was Holets doing when he met Champ?
A.He was on his way home.
B.He was looking into a theft.
C.He was making a telephone call.
D.He was buying things in a store.
【2】What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 7 refer to?
A.the encouragement B.the telephone

【3】Why did Edison call Holets to ask for forgiveness?
A.He did wrong to Holets.
B.He didn’t keep his promise.
C.Holets didn’t get promoted as expected.
D.He made Holets become the focus of attention.
【4】What did Holets expect people to do?
A.Raise money for families like his.
B.Support the police’s routine work.
C.Make donations to adoption organizations.
D.Set up an organization to help the homeless.

If the family had forgiven (原谅) him, they were to put up a white ribbon (丝带) in the big apple tree near the railway. If they didn't want him back, they were to do nothing, and he would stay on the train, and go far away.
As the train neared his hometown his suspense became so great that he was afraid to look out of the window. He asked Michael to watch for the big apple tree. They changed seats. 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I lived in Portland, Oregon, I taught English as a Second Language at a local community college. I had adult students in my class from Vietnam, Mexico, Russia and many other countries. Although they came from many lands, fighting for a better life in America, they had one thing in common: a desperate yearning (渴望) to learn English well.
Many of the students worked in a factory for twelve hours throughout the night and hurriedly took a bus in the morning straight to our 8:00 A. M. class. They attended my class on time whatever the weather. Sometimes I would see them struggling to keep their eyes open in the beginning. However, their active participation in class drove away their physical tiredness as well as livened up the atmosphere.
I still remember the day when I taught a simple dialogue called “Shopping for a New Coat”. To teach the course, I asked several students to role-play the dialogue. Alexander from Hungary, one of the most hardworking members of the class, volunteered to stand up and act it out. Hard as he tried, he still made lots of mistakes. However, I praised him. After class, he hurried to me and raised a bunch of questions by gesture. I was not quite sure about his questions, so I explained the key points again. After that, he nodded and stuttered, “Thank you, Mrs. Green! Your encouragement really made my day!”
Actually, it was him who made my day. Sometimes I wondered if I was really teaching my students in the best way possible. But I gave my all to this class, and they gave their all to me. If nothing else, they would always remember what to say if they ever went “shopping for a new coat”. Soon, the language course came to an end.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
On the last day of class, they threw a wonderful party that was filled with good food and laughter.
