21、 As a composer, Andrew Pekler aims to make music that uses synthetic(合成的)sounds to build real-seeming places. With electronic instruments, he creates the sound of wind, waves, bird calls, and insects. "The sweet spot for me is when a piece I have made can be heard both as a field recording and as a completely composed, synthetic construct,'* he says.
In his new work, an online app called Phantom Islands, he tries out that idea to create a tour of islands that mapmakers once believed were real, but do not actually exist. Working with the web designer and developer Flavio Gortana, Pekler drew a map of imagined islands and filled each one with a fictional auditory(听觉 的)atmosphere.
When European ships were traveling the world, during the Age of Exploration, the men on board would come back with tales of the islands they'd come across, previously, unknown, to their societies. Usually these reports would be accurate enough, but sometimes this system went awry. Ship captains would conjure up(虚构 出 )imaginary islands to please their funders and sailors would report seeing land that never existed. Over time, these reports would be corrected, although sometimes it would take centuries. Reports of phantom islands are still being exposed in this century. They're strange relics of a human attempt to better understand the world, with all the weaknesses that came along with that project. That's part of what fascinates Pekler. "These nonexistent places are connected with real stories of human bravery, devotion, cruelty, selfishness, and confidence,” he says.
Allow the map to take you on a tour, during which you will be accompanied by extraordinary sounds. Or you can explore on your own, hopping from one island to another, imagining places that never existed.

22、 From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps to boost creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that notion.Psychologists from Lancaster University, the University of Gavle, and the University of Central Lancashire say that their findings indicate music actually stops creativity.
To come to their conclusions, researchers made participants complete verbal(语言的) insight problems designed to inspire their creativity while in a quiet room and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music “damaged” the participants' ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity.
The research team also tested background noises such as those often heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects' creativity. The tasks were simple word games. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, ete).Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music: music with unfamiliar lyrics, instrumental music or music with familiar lyrics.
They found strong evidence of damaging performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study's authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “steady state” environment that doesn't disrupt concentration.
It's worth mentioning that even familiar music with well-known lyrics would damage participants' creativity, regardless of whether or not it inspired a positive reaction, or whether participants typically studied or created while listening to music.
【1】What does the underlined word “notion” mean in the first paragraph?

A.Instrumental music.
B.Music with familiar lyrics.
C.Music with unfamiliar lyrics.
D.Common noise in the library.
【4】What should we do in the future according to the study?
A.Never listen to music.
B.Listen to some strong music.

23、The World Wildlife Fund states that up to 100 million sharks and rays are caught each year across the world, both on purpose in targeted fisheries and by accident, as bycatch. As a result, shark populations are in rapid decline. Sharks grow relatively slowly and produce few young, so they are easily harmed or influenced by overfishing.
Robert Enever of Fishtek Marine and his team developed SharkGuard, in response to the dramatic declines in shark and ray numbers. They based it on shark deterrents that are currently used successfully to protect surfers and changed it to be used in tuna fisheries, where bycatch of sharks and rays is significant. The novel equipment is fixed to a hook on a line, and it produces a small electric field which sharks and rays can pick up with their electroreceptors and this, hopefully, will keep them away from the hook.
The experiments took place off southern France, during July and August 2021. Eleven separate fishing trips were made and 18,866 hooks were used, half of which carried a SharkGuard. The results, presented in the journal Current Biology, showed that SharkGuard hooks greatly reduced the number of blue sharks and oceanic stingrays caught, while having no big influence on the catch of bluefin tuna.
With its effectiveness proved, there is still some way to go before fisheries could start using the equipment. Firstly, there is the limitation of the batteries. Each SharkGuide needs to be changed every 65 hours of use. The developers are working to solve this problem, so users could “fit and forget“ them, while still protecting sharks and other sea animals.
Now, the researchers are calling on fishers and companies experiencing high shark and ray bycatch to contact Fishtek Marine.

24、The United Arab Emirates (UAE) just completed the first fully 3D-printed office building on the planet. The futuristic Office of the Future is a 242m2 single -story building that will host the offices of the Dubai Future Foundation. It was a very impressive 17 days for the actual printing, as well as only 2 days for the installation (安装)!
A Chinese company, WinSun, masterminded the project. Those familiar with this field might remember that the firm, specializing in experimental 3D printing projects, has made headlines several times in the last few years.
The architectural 3D printer, located in Shanghai, used concrete mixed with other materials to produce walls, floors and ceilings with a 3D printer that is 66m high, 32m long and 10m wide. All the 3D-printed parts were made in China and then sipped to Dubai and installed on site.
Such a 3D printing architecture project heavily relies on scaling (按比例缩放), a technique often used in the 3D scan to print industry. In order to build a life size building, only a mini model is necessary! After the model is 3D scanned, digitally scaled, then printed, it can actually “come to life”!
The benefits of this new technology are numerous. For one, the labor costs are reduced by at least 50%. Such a building process is eco friendly, since it can reduce construction waste by 60%. It also can bring pre printed buildings to sites that were previously completely unsuitable for construction, produce shelters very quickly when disaster strikes, or simply make it possible to create the most original, complex, crazy architectural shapes!
“This paves (铺平) the way for a future where 3D printing architecture can help solve pressing environmental problems, and it allows us to deliver highly unique buildings for our customers in a much shorter time,” explained Richard Hammond, chief architect at Gensler.
【1】How long has it taken to build the Office of the Future?
A.2 days.
B.15 days.
C.17 days.
D.19 days.
【2】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The complete building process.
B.Materials used for 3D printing.
C.Benefits of 3D printing technology.
D.A key technique for 3D printing.
【3】The 3D printing technology can ________.
A.Cut the labor Costs by less than 50%
B.deliver buildings in a much shorter time
C.build different houses without any waste
D.print shelters on site in areas just hit by disasters
【4】What does Richard Hammond say about the new technology?
A.It is widely used.
B.It is not practical.
C.It is promising.
D.It is cheap.
