二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.

Men often discover their affinity(亲密) to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, ‘Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this:” Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.

A good book is often the best urn(瓮)of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.

Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time have been to sift(筛) out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive  but what is really good.

Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were, in a measure, actors with them in the scenes which they describe.

The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed(加以防腐处理) in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens.

【1】What’s the meaning of the underlined word immortality”?

    A. difficult to find B. last for a long time

    C. very important     D. hard to destroy

【2】How do we get close to the greatest minds through reading?

    A. by talking to them about what we thought

    B. by experiencing what they have gone through in life

    C. by sharing their feeling and reading their minds

    D. by acting with them on the stage

【3】What is the best title of this text?

    A. Companionship of books B. Life without books

    C. Unforgettable books    D. Sorting out books

【4】This passage is mainly developed by __________.

    A. analyzing causes

    B. making comparisons

    C. examining differences

    D. following the order of importance

  • 22、At VOA Learning English, we sometimes get questions like this: “How can I speak English with more confidence?” 【1】 No matter what language we are learning, we would all love to speak more confidently. So today, we have three pieces of advice to help you gain confidence in your English-speaking ability.

    Use positive self-talk

Believe it or not, the most important person you talk to every day is yourself. In other words: 【2】 So our first piece of advice is to use positive self-talk.

If you lack confidence as an English speaker, you may tell yourself things like, “【3】” When you talk to other people, you may say things like, “I’m so sorry for my English.” But if you keep thinking and saying such things, you are sure to start believing them.

So the next time you are using your English, pay attention to what you tell yourself or others. Be sure to replace unhelpful thoughts or ideas with better ones.

    Don’t worry too much

One of the biggest barriers to confidence in speaking a second language is the constant worry about making mistakes.

Understand that making mistakes is a natural part of the language learning process. Yes, you will make mistakes. 【4】 And many English learners communicate very well, even with mistakes. Mistakes can be a good thing. The more mistakes you make, the more progress you will make.

    Set realistic goals

If your English-speaking skills are at the beginner or intermediate level and you try to do something too difficult, you may fail. 【5】 But, if you do something that matches your level, you are more likely to do it well.

    A.That is a great question.

    B.This can harm your confidence.

C.It is your thoughts that really matter.

D.Speak louder and slow down your speech.

E.English is too hard and I will never improve.

F.It is important to practise speaking English every day.

G.But the purpose of speaking a language is to communicate.

  • 23、When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close due to fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.

But still, the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring. "I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted," Chen said.

The coronavirus has upended everyone's lives, but for students, the disruption feels particularly acute. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, like camps and internships (实习),are up in the air.

But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with misinformation, and figuring out the best ways they can help through online method.

For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Ship-ley School in Philadelphia, the best way to contribute was to create a "social distancing pledge (承诺)" for young people.

"I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention," he said. "They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news."

Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who'd signed the pledge. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can't connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant, they're still connected.

"Part of what we're highlighting is that you might feel like you're the only one taking this

seriously, but our map shows that you're not alone," he said.

【1】What does the underlined word "jarring" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.natural

    B.disturbing

    C.necessary

    D.reasonable

【2】Why does the author describe Andrew Chen's experience in the text?

A.To show how the coronavirus affected students' lives.

B.To explain what worried students most when schools closed.

C.To illustrate the appropriate reaction to the closure of school.

D.To present the different views of students toward the coronavirus.

【3】Who does Harycki mainly want to reach out to?

A.Friends who are worried and bored.

    B.Folks taking the coronavirus seriously.

    C.Younger generations trying to contribute.

D.Young people who are not aware of the situation.

【4】What's Harycki's purpose in creating the "social distancing pledge"?

A.To convince young people to stay at home.

B.To track those people infected with the coronavirus.

C.To inform young folks of latest news about the coronavirus.

D.To show young people they shouldn't be concerned about the coronavirus.

  • 24、When I was in middle school, a poisonous spider bit my right hand. I ran to my mom for help —but instead of taking me to a doctor, my mom set my hand on fire. After wrapping my hand with several layers of cotton, then soaking it in wine, she put a chopstick into my mouth, and ignited the cotton. Heat quickly penetrated the cotton and began to roast my hand. The pain made me want to scream, but the chopstick prevented it. All I could do was watch my hand burn —one minute, then two minutes— until mom put out the fire.

You see, the part of China I grew up in was a rural village, and at that time preindustrial. When I was born, my village had no cars, no telephones, no electricity, and even no running water. And we certainly didn’t have access to modern medical resources. There was no doctor my mother could bring me to see about my spider bite.

For those who study biology, you may have grasped the science behind my mom’s cure: heat deactivates(使失去活性) proteins, and a spider’s venom (毒液) is simply a form of protein. It’s cool how that folk remedy actually incorporates basic biochemistry, isn’t it? But I am a PhD student in biochemistry at Harvard, I now know that better, less painful and less risky treatments existed. So I can’t help but ask myself why I didn’t receive one at the time.

Fifteen years have passed since that incident I am happy to report that my hand is fine. But this question lingers, and I continue to be troubled by it. We have learned to edit the human genome(基因组) and unlock many secrets of how cancer progresses. We can control neuronal activity literally with the switch of a light. Each year brings more advances in biomedical research—exciting, transformative accomplishments. Yet, despite the knowledge we have accumulated, we haven’ t been so successful in distributing it to where it’s needed most. According to the World Bank, twelve percent of the world’s population lives on less than $ 2 a day. Malnutrition kills more than 3 million children annually. Three hundred million people are suffering malaria globally. All over the world, we constantly see these problems of poverty, illness, and lack of resources preventing the flow of scientific information. Life-saving knowledge we take for granted in the modern world is often unavailable in these underdeveloped regions. And in far too many places, people are still essentially trying to cure a spider bite with fire.

1How did the author’s mom cure him of the spider’s bite?

    A. She sent him to the nearby hospital immediately.

    B. She asked the neighbors for help.

    C. She wrapped the wound with cotton and burnt it.

    D. She let him drink some wine.

2What was NOT the author’s hometown like?

    A. It was a backward village in China.

    B. It was an industrial rural village.

    C. It had no running water, telephones or cars.

    D. People there had no access to modern medical care.

3Which of the following can replace the underlined word “incorporates” in Paragraph 3?

    A. includes   B. resists

    C. inspires   D. invents

4What does the author want to do most?

    A. Change the unequal distribution of scientific knowledge.

    B. Discover more secrets to cancer.

    C. Bring more advances in biochemistry.

    D. Invent better and less painful treatments.
