二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   University of New South Wales has launched its new 12-month Women in Maths & Science Champions Program designed to give women the skills and confidence to build their public recognition and set up a connected network of women in maths and science. The first group of 30 female PhD students started in August this year, and the second group of 19 early- career researchers was formally announced yesterday.

Over the 12 months, the champions complete at least 20 hours of related activities as part of a community of representatives who will influence and inspire women to pursue a career in maths and science. The activities are varied, ranging from visiting schools and conducting science presentations, to attending conferences and creating content for social media. At the end of the program, PhD champions have the chance to apply everything they’ve learned to the Postgraduate Research Competition. Above all, participating is a requirement for program completion.

Rose O’Dea, a member of the first group, is a PhD candidate at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. She said, “I’m excited about the opportunity to work with school children. I hope to inspire some girls so they see not all scientists are older men in lab coals and that science is quite diverse and means different things depending on who you are.”

Dr. Mariana Mayer Pinto is an early-career researcher at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, where she mainly works with marine (海洋的) ecologists. She is originally from Brazil and said that being a woman from a developing country meant she knew the struggles that lack of role models can create. “You can’t be what you can’t see! I always have the hope that I can change the world bit by bit, and if one little girl says she can become a scientist because I talked to them, that’d be awesome, and that would make everything worth it.”

1What is the program intended to do?

    A. Test female PhD’s learning results.

    B. Promote the equality of men and women.

    C. Set up an organization for women scientists.

    D. Improve women’s participation in math and science.

2What is required if a participant want to complete the program?

    A. To persuade as least one female to take up science.

    B. To participate in at least 20 hours of related activities.

    C. To apply what they have learnt to their graduation paper.

    D. To work as a representative to give presentations.

3What does Rose O’Dea think about science?

    A. Varied. B. Inspiring.

    C. Unchangeable. D. Exciting.

4What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?

    A. To share how family background matters.

    B. To show the overall results of this program.

    C. To add an example of how a participant feels.

    D. To tell of role models to encourage female students.

  • 23、It was dinner time for the Rangers, a group of mostly Indigenous (本地的) Australians who had spent a long day cleaning up the polluted beaches of the continent’s northern coast. Soon they would be eating freshly caught fish and seafood cooked under the stars on an open fire, as their ancestors did.

The Rangers are of more than 100 Indigenous groups spread across Australia who have taken on the job of protecting the land of their forefathers. In Arnhem Land, they are the protectors of 3,300 square miles of land and sea. They comb the beaches by hand, picking up as much rubbish as possible. The task is very difficult as each day it delivers waves of new rubbish.

For the Rangers, cleaning the beaches is more than a vacation. For a people whose culture is strongly tied to the land, protecting the environment is equal to preserving their history.

However, colonization forcefully broke their connection to the land generations ago. Indigenous people were displaced and their cultural practices outlawed.Tens of thousands of years of traditional land management ended, and as a result many parts of the country now face serious disasters from invasive plant and animal species, bush fires and land mismanagement.

In recent years, the government has restored more than 20 percent of Australia’s land to indigenous owners.Since 2007, the Indigenous Rangers Organizations have been at work protecting this land.

Luck, one of the few nonIndigenous employees working with the Rangers, said the combination of old and new techniques and an appreciation for the culture of indigenous workers has been critical to the program’s success.

“You are working with staff who see the world different to you, so there is a much higher focus on the cultural aspects of work and life,” he said.

“Being a ranger is a source of confidence. You feel strong,” said Terence, a senior ranger. “Here we still live on the land. The culture is still alive.”

A.It’s a job of their ancestors’.

    B.It’s just a vacation.

    C.It’s a difficult task.

    D.It’s their culture.

【3】Why has the government restored the land to Indigenous owners?

A.The polluted land needs better management.

    B.Their cultural practices were outlawed.

    C.The people were too strong.

    D.The land belongs to them.

【4】What can we learn from the last three paragraphs?

A.Not many employees are the Indigenous Australians.

B.Culture is important to the Indigenous Australians.

    C.Their new techniques are successful.

D.Both Luck and Terence are rangers.

  • 24、   Respect is one of the most important qualities in your relationship with anyone. 1 Having respect for yourself is vital in maintaining a positive self-image by allowing yourself to feel confident in who you are.

Self-respect is about having the courage to stand up for yourself when you are being treated in a manner that is less than what you deserve. It is about knowing your worth and having the ability to adjust your life. 2 If you have respect for yourself, you will naturally demand respect from others.

Self-respect is about being the kind of person that you are proud of and the kind of person that pleases the people you care about. If you reflect on your life and the things you have done and feel a strong sense of dignity, you are likely to possess a great deal of self-respect. 3 If you are not proud of who you are or what you've done in your life, then you could be letting yourself down or compromising (妥协) your values.

Ultimately, if you are confident in yourself and proud of who you are, you are respecting yourself by being the person you wish to show the world. 4 And then most people will treat you well in return. Have enough respect for others and never treat people poorly. Have enough respect for yourself and know that you deserve to be surrounded by good people. Self-respect is the basis of a good relationship with yourself and eventually others. 5

A.For example, you can remove people from your life if they are treating you poorly.

B.So it is very important to build a strong basis capable of facing anything.

C.Self-respect is about having a sense of humor about yourself.

D.But there is no exception when it comes to your relationship with yourself.

E.Treat others with the same respect you are giving to yourself.

F.If you respect yourself enough, you will get respect from the people who care about you.

G.The ability to have pride in yourself is the most important aspect of self-respect.
