四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、How long whales live in fresh water has become a matter of some discussion with several visits of whales to fresh water. The interest in this matter first became hottest in 1985 when Humphrey the humpback whale (座头鲸) managed several weeks in the fresh water of the Sacramento River before finally returning to the Pacific Ocean. The matter happened again in May of 2007, when a mother whale and her baby whale entered the Sacramento River.

In general, some experts say that it is uncommon to see whales in fresh water for more than a few weeks because most whales are built for salt water environments. Scientists are not exactly sure how long whales can live in fresh water. In fresh water, they can’t get their regular food. Besides, small cuts, for example, are easily cured in salt water. Fresh water environments do not provide materials which are good for cuts.

Fresh water environments are also not natural for a whale’s swimming and diving activities. Most whales swim in water that is at least 20 feet (6.1 m) deep. Fresh water rivers may be only a few feet deeper than the girth of a whale’s body. This makes them more likely to be beached.

Many whales are migratory (迁徙的) animals by habit. Since they are not used to the route they are taking, whales can easily get lost. Biologists are certain that few whales in fresh water will survive more than a month. Though it may be interesting to see whales in fresh water, it’s a matter of concern (担心) to whale lovers.

【1】What makes the matter how long whales live in fresh water be discussed?

A.Humans want to find more places for whales.

B.Humans want to find fresh water in the ocean.

C.Whales are facing dangers living in the sea.

D.Whales make several visits to fresh water.

【2】What does the underlined word “girth” in the third paragraph probably mean?

    A.Health.

    B.Width.

    C.Warmth.

    D.Weight.

【3】Which of the following facts are the scientists sure of?

A.There isn’t plenty of food in fresh water.

B.Whales can live in fresh water quite long.

C.Whales can’t get small cuts easily in salt water.

D.Few whales in fresh water will survive too long.

【4】What would probably be discussed in the next part?

A.The route that the whales would know.

B.The actions taken to keep whales in fresh water.

C.The ways to help whales return to their natural environments.

D.The research on how long whales will survive in fresh water.

  • 25、Space vegetables are grown from seeds (种子) that have been taken to space and brought back to the earth. The seeds are affected by the radiation (辐射) and low gravity in space. When they are brought back to the earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger and healthier than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could make us get sick because of the radiation in space. However, people should not be frightened because space vegetables are very healthy.

Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables.

Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully chosen. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that they will be safe to eat.

Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes.

After genetically modified (转基因) food appeared in the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes (坚果基因) are put inside potatoes, people allergic (过敏的) to nuts might get sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified food, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, there are no dangers of eating something unknown.

【1】The seeds brought back from space produce ______ vegetables according to the passage.

    A.more delicious

    B.healthier and bigger

    C.more dangerous

    D.cheaper and healthier

【2】Genetically modified food is different from space vegetables because it ______.

    A.is grown in space

    B.has nothing unknown

    C.has been genetically changed

    D.has no new genes

【3】According to the passage, normal tomatoes can stay fresh for about ______ days.

    A.seven

    B.thirteen

    C.twenty

    D.twenty-seven

【4】The writer wants to tell us that ______.

A.space vegetables are grown in space

B.everybody worries about eating space vegetables

C.space vegetables are safe and good for people to eat

D.space vegetables may bring illness to us because of the radiation in space

  • 26、Many people believe that tea was first drunk nearly 5,000 years ago. It is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong was the first to discover tea as drink. More than 4,000 years later, Lu Yu, “the saints of tea” mention Shen Nong in his book Cha Jing. The book described how tea plants were grown and used to make tea. It also discusses where the finest tea leaves were produced and what kinds of water were used.

It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. In England, tea didn’t appear until around 1660, but less than 100 years later, it had become the national drink. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. This helped to spread the popularity of tea and the tea plant to more places around the world. Even though many people now know about tea culture, the Chinese are without doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea.

Judge the following sentences true(T) or false(F) according to the passage.

【1】It is said that Shen Nong was the first to discover tea as a drink.

【2】The book Cha Jing was written by Lu Yu.

【3】The tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 7th and 8th century.

【4】The tea trade from Western countries to China took place in the 18th century.

【5】The Chinese are the ones who best understand the nature of tea.

  • 27、It can be annoying when you go somewhere where there is no Wi-Fi and no mobile phone signal. How can you get online? A spaceflight company called Space-X might have the solution—its Star-Link satellite network.

The company recently launched 60 satellites into space that will be added to the network. That launch brings the network’s total number of satellites to 895, according to CBS News. The company hopes to eventually put as many as 12,000 of these satellites into orbit (轨道), which was first announced in January 2015, is to provide users with high-speed space-based internet access (接入) from any point on earth.

“We’re really talking about something which is, in the long term, like rebuilding the internet in space,” Space-X said when announcing the project.

So how does it work? Satellite internet works by using large spacecraft that move very far above Earth. These spacecraft receive information from base stations on Earth and then beam (发送) the information back down to users.

But these spacecraft are so far away that signals are slow and weak. Star-Link solves this problem by using many small satellites that can communicate with each other and move closer to Earth, making signals stronger and faster.

It’s a big plan but also one that is looking more possible with every launch. A town in Washington state recently used Star-Link while helping local people rebuild after a huge wildfire. Richard Hall, an IT expert who helped with the rebuilding, said he was impressed with the service.

“I have never set up any tactical (战术的) satellite equipment that has been as quick to set up and anywhere near as trusty, “Hall told CBS News.

【1】Which is not a necessary condition to run Star-Link?

A.Satellites can connect with each other.

B.More satellites need launching into space.

C.Satellites should keep closer to Earth.

D.Satellites must move as quickly as possible.

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The total number of network’s satellites will be 895.

B.Base stations on Earth can send information to users.

C.We can get online much faster with the help of Star-Link.

D.Star-Link helped the Washington town put out the wildfire.

【3】Which of the following word best describes Hall’s attitude (态度) to Star-Link?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Patient.

    C.Confident.

    D.Worried.

  • 28、   When I was ten, my mother worked all day, so I had to1 care of my younger brother. At that time, my little brother was about four years old and he missed mum all the time.
