24、 Dragons are not real animals, but look like a combination(结合)of many animals such as snakes, fish and deer. They have two horns (角)and a long moustache (胡子)。With fantastic power, they fly in the sky or swim in the sea. They can make rain, too. The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck.
We are proud to call ourselves the “descendants (后代)of the dragon”. In Chinese, “excellent” people are often called “dragons”. A number of Chinese sayings and idioms talk about dragons, for example, “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon means “hoping he or she will be successful”.
It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon have certain characteristics (特点). They are creative, confident and brave. There are some famous “dragons” who have done excellent things, for example, the great man Deng Xiaoping, the famous businessman Li Jiacheng and the movie star Zhao Wei. They are all very successful.
There are also some traditional festival about dragons in China, such as Dragon Heads-raising Day and Dragon Boat Festival. We have different kinds of activities to celebrate them. These two festivals come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon.

25、Manners are very important for our daily life. There are many different customs and habits among different countries. We must find out and follow their customs so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are examples of the things that a person with good education should do.
If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in, please.” After you enter the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is sent to your hand, you should say“Thank you”and receive it with two hands. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor always leaves a little food to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes the food to show that he has enjoyed it. The host will be pleased with that.
You have to give your present in public in the Middle East to show it is not a bribe. But it’s good manners to give your present in private in Asia. You mustn’t give knives in Latin America because it suggests that you want to cut off the relationship. You mustn’t give your food to Arabia because it suggests that you think your host isn’t offering you enough to eat .
“Come any time” means “I want you to visit me” in India. If you don’t suggest a time at once, the India will think you are refusing the invitation. But if an Englishman says “Come any time”, they will think you are impolite if you start fixing a date.

26、 F. Scott Fitzgerald, born on September 24, 1896, an American novelist, was once a student of St. Paul Academy, the Newman School and attended Princeton University for a short while. In 1917 he joined the army and was posted in Alabama, where he met his future wife Zelda Sayre. Then he had to make some money to impress her.
His life with her was full of great happiness, as he wrote in his diary: “My own happiness in the past often got such joy that I could not share it even with the person dearest to me but had to walk it away in quiet streets and take down parts of it in my diary.”
This side of paradise, his first novel, was published in 1920. Encouraged by its success, Fitzgerald began to devote more time to his writing. Then he continued with the novel the Beautiful and Damned (1922), a collection of short stories Thales of the Jazz Age (1922), and a play The Vegetable (1923). But his greatest success was the novel The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, which quick brought him praise from the literary world. Yet it failed to give him the needed financial security. Then, in 1926, he published another collection of short stories All the Sad Young Men.
However, Fitzgerald’s problems with his wife Zelda had an effect on his writing. During the 1920s he tried to reorder his life, but failed. By 1930, his wife had her first breakdown and went to a Swiss clinic. During this period he completed novels Tender Is the Night in 1934 and The love of the last Tycoon in 1940. James Trapp, a writer for the British Council, suggests that Sun Wukong, known to most Western readers 【8】 the Monkey King, is the reason for the novel’s lasting popularity. “In many ways, the Monkey King is the archetype of the folk hero, or in modern terms, the superhero,” Trapp wrote.
