四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Sadness and happiness are often talked about by people in their spare time. Most people want themselves to be happy forever, but few know how to find happiness. Others say if you own lots of money and success, you will be happy. However, money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. A famous Greek thinker, Aristotle, said, “Happiness depends on ourselves.” That’s to say, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job, which we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favourite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret to living a happy life is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping or help out with some things around the house for an elderly person.

  • 25、Years ago I worked at a factory in a small county. Every day I got up very early and often did much extra work at night. I was so tired and exhausted. My whole life was hopeless. Then one day I read the following article from a magazine:

“A woman went to live with her husband in camp on the Mojave Desert (沙漠) during the war. She simply hated the place: the heat was almost un-bearable 125 degrees in the shade the wind blew incessantly and there was sand-sand everywhere. Finally in desperation (不顾一切地) she wrote her parents in Ohio that she couldn’t stand it another minute and was coming home.

Quickly came the reply by airmail from her father—just two lines:

“Two men looked out from prison (监狱) bars. One saw the mud (泥) the other saw stars.”

The daughter did some real thinking not only with the intellect (思维) but also with her heart. She decided to stick to (坚持) her post. She made friends with the natives learned to love the country and eventually wrote a book about it.

The desert hadn’t changed but her attitude (态度) had. Because she listened with her heart to the words her father sent a whole new world opened up to her.

  • 26、Every student knows the importance of taking notes in class. But the skill of notes taking isn’t only used in school. Adults need to take notes in meetings or training sessions for work. So here are some tips to help you develop this critical skill.

Begin with the date and the topic of the class. This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget. It will help you keep your notes organized.

Focus on the most important points. Trying to write down everything the speaker says will only frustrate you. Instead, listen to the key ideas the person wants to communicate.

If the speaker uses a PowerPoint, you may not need to copy the slides (幻灯片). Ask if the PowerPoint can be used afterward. If so, you can pay attention to writing down the things the speaker says instead. Or you can take a picture with a phone. Also, the PowerPoint with notes may be available before the class or meeting. If so, print (打印) it out so you can write notes on it.

Think about whether you want to take notes by hand or with a computer. Writing notes by hand has been shown to help you remember things better. But with a computer, notes are easier to organize. Perhaps the best way is to combine the two ways. Write notes by hand first, and then type them up as part of your review.

Consider different note-taking methods. If you’re a visual learner, consider drawing a chart or a picture. Another method is to write an outline with details indented (细节缩排) under the points they support.

Look over your notes again after taking them. This will give you the chance to add any information that you didn’t write down. It’s best to do this as soon as possible, so that you don’t forget anything. This review will also increase your chances of remembering what you wrote. Note-taking is a practical skill, so it’s important to practice doing it well.

【1】What does the 4th paragraph mainly talk about?

A.How to make a useful and nice PowerPoint.

B.How to make notes when the speaker use a PowerPoint.

C.How to print out the PowerPoint before the class or meeting.

【2】What’s the advantage of taking notes by hand?

A.It can help you remember things better.

B.It can help you to save more time.

C.It is easier to organize for others.

【3】What gives you the chance to add any information that you didn’t write down?

    A.Listening to the speaker carefully.

B.Using a PowerPoint in the meeting.

C.Looking over notes again after taking them.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.How to use a PowerPoint

B.How to listen to a speech

    C.How to take notes
