    How to Be Safe Alone

Being alone at home or outside the house, especially if it’s a new experience, can be scary (吓人的). But don’t worry. With a few tips below, you’ll be prepared to face the situation all by yourself.

Tip 1 Keep a key on you at all times.

Keep the key with you all the time. Keep it in a safe place, such as your wallet or inner pocket. Make sure you don’t lose it. You don’t want to get locked out of the house on a day when your parents won’t be back until late. But don’t leave it outside your house (e.g. under the doormat or in the garden.) — someone could find it easily and break into the house.

Tip 2 Have a list of phone numbers.

If you lose your cell phone or the battery (电池) dies, you don’t want to realize you can’t remember the number to call your dad at work. Put the phone list somewhere important, maybe where you keep your key. Besides your parents’ phone numbers, you should have at least three of others’.

Tip 3 Keep emergency (紧急) money with you.

Don’t keep too much money on you. Twenty dollars should be fine at home, but outside of the home alone, you may not want to carry more than five. It’s all about safety. Discuss with your parents how much money you should have with you.

Tip 4 Always have a backup plan.

Unfortunately, things do go wrong sometimes. In such a sudden situation, not being prepared can be scary, even dangerous. Discuss with your parents and neighbors about what you should do in emergency situations that may happen. Find the fastest way to get help.

【1】It’s better to keep the room key ________.

    A.outside the house

    B.in the pocket

    C.under the doormat

    D.in the garden

【2】How many phone numbers at least are you advised to keep for safety? ________

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【3】Which of the actions may be safe at home but dangerous outside alone? ________

A.Have a phone list with you.

    B.Forget to call your parents.

    C.Carry 20 dollars with you.

    D.Keep room keys with you.

【4】Why do you need a backup plan? ________

A.Because it can get you ready for a sudden change.

B.Because it’s always too dangerous to stay outside.

C.Because the other plan will fail to work properly.

D.Because it is the fastest way for you to get help.

【5】The passage is probably written for ________.

    A.teachers

    B.children

    C.parents

    D.policemen

  • 25、One of the most common forms of public speaking is the ―presentation‖. A presentation is one of the best ways of communicating your message. This article will give you seven of the most important areas to consider when giving any presentation.

Preparation Prepare! Prepare! Prepare! Good preparation is very important for any presentation. With good preparation and planning you will be fully confident. This will give you control. With control, you will be ―in charge‖ and your audience (听众) will listen positively to your message.

Structure A good presentation has a clear structure, like a good book or film. It usually has a beginning, a middle part and an end.

Equipment You may use any of the following pieces of equipment as you want: whiteboard, flipchart, overhead projector, 35 mm slide projector and computer graphics.

Each of these has advantages and disadvantages. The important thing is to know and understand your equipment perfectly, and then you can use it freely and properly.

Visual Aids ―A picture is worth 1,000 words.‖ There are many types of visual aids (直观教具) photographs, maps, tables etc. But you should use them with care. Do not overload your audience with too much information in a short time. A good rule is: use one image to give one message.

Signposting When you read a book, you know where you are. You know the title of the book, the end of one chapter, and even the page number. But when you give a presentation, your audience does not know where they are unless you TELL them! You can use special language called ―signaling‖ or ―signposting‖ to help you. Here are a few examples: Let’s begin by...; Now we’ll move on to...; To start with...later...; To finish up....

Audience Relations You need a warm and friendly relationship with your audience. How do you achieve this? Well, enthusiasm is contagious. If you are enthusiastic (热情的), your audience will be enthusiastic too. Try to make eye contact with each member of your audience. Each person should feel that you are speaking to him or her personally.

Body Language Your BODY speaks to your audience even before you open your mouth. From your clothes, walk, glasses, haircut and your expression, your listeners form their first impression as you enter the room.

【1】 How will you be fully confident in a presentation according to the passage?

    A. With necessary equipment.

    B. With enough visual aids.

    C. With proper body language.

    D. With careful preparation.

【2】The writer may agree that signposting can help ______.

    A. speakers to be more enthusiastic

    B. the audience catch up with speakers

    C. the audience form the first impression

    D. speakers avoid using equipment improperly

【3】 What does the underlined word ―contagious‖ in Paragraph 8 mean?

    A. Highly praised. B. Deeply hidden.

    C. Clearly expressed. D. Easily spread.

Children need time to stand and stare. They should be allowed to get bored so that they can develop their ability to be creative.

【1】 However, research shows that it may hamper (妨碍) the development of their imagination, while boredom can give them opportunities to develop creativity.

Boredom often goes along with loneliness, but a writer named Meera Syal said boredom had helped her in developing her mind. 【2】 Having few things to do, Syal often talked with her neighbors. She also tried to do things like learning to bake cakes. “But importantly, I thought and wrote a lot, because I was bored,” Syal said. She kept a diary, filling her time with short stories and poems she made up.

Grace Perry, an artist, grew up in a family with little money. She enjoyed herself by making up stories, drawing pictures for her stories and reading many books in the library. Bored but free, she spent hours looking out of the window, watching the changing clouds and seasons. 【3】 She became creative, because she could think freely.

Usually, when children have nothing to do, they would turn on the TV, the computer, or the phone. 【4】 But they need to have time to think about their experiences through play or just watching the world around them.

【5】 On the other hand, the TV or phone may cut short the thinking process. That can be harmful to the development of creativity. “For developing the ability to be creative,” Dr. Belton advised, “perhaps we need to stand and stare, and stay offline from time to time.”

A.Their time on these things has increased.

B.She told researchers about her childhood.

C.Most children feel bored about their school life.

D.She filled up her free time with what she liked.

E.It is this kind of thinking that can inspire the imagination.

F.Children are expected by their parents to be reading a textbook all the time.

    Black Friday

Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.

Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (打折). Some items (商品)like TVs and cloths are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.

Black Friday is a great time to go shopping. However, there are problem. The biggest one is that there are not enough low-priced items. Each store may only have a few. These items are in great need, so people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three to four hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or computer, but not everybody can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.

The situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have even been hurt by large crowds. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.

So where does the name “Black Friday” come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to rename the day “Big Friday”. It did not stick. The name “Black Friday” continued to spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.

Now people all over the country take part in Black Friday events. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Mexico, stores offer a weekend of discounts every year. They call it “El Buen Fin”, which means “the good weekend” in Spanish. I guess people everywhere like to buy things on sale.
