24、Amy was a lovely little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared instead of doing them at once.
In the village, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruits of all kinds, including berries (莓子) when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, some blackberries on Mr. Green’s farm are ripe (成熟的) and fine today. He said that anybody was welcome to pick them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all you pick for me.”
Amy was excited about the thought of making some money to help her mom, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. 25、Alice Lewis is from America. She is a creative (有创造力的) girl. She likes to invent—to think of new ideas for things that no one has made before, and then make them.
One day, Alice’s mother showed her an article which explained how difficult it was to get sick people through the countryside to the hospital in Africa. Alice wanted to help.
Alice knew that in North America, before there were cars, horses pulled heavy things on a travois (旧式雪橇) which was made of wood. Alice thought people in Africa could do the same thing. She added wheels to the travois for the African people. To make her travois light to pull, she used bamboo, a plant that grows in Africa, instead of wood.
You need to wear a belt (腰带) to pull Alice’s travois. That means you can free your hands to carry or hold other things. Alice thought her travois was perfect for carrying food home from the market, as well as taking people to the hospital. After it was finished, she wrote instructions (说明书) for building one. So people in Africa could make it by themselves.

Even if (尽管) people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation. It’s not surprising, because the idea of home is different from country to country, and from person to person. A home is more than a roof(屋顶)and four walls. It’s cooking, eating, talking, playing and sleeping that go on inside. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
Homes look different in different countries. They also have different things inside. For example, in cold northern Europe, there’s a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it’s more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows and cool stone floors.
We asked some people about their homes. How often do people move house in your country? “In my country many people don’t stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten years or so.”
— Cherry, Boston, USA
What are features (特点) of homes in your country?
“In Britain, even in town, there’s always a garden. We have separate(各自的) bedrooms and living rooms. But we don’t often have balconies. The weather isn’t warm enough!
