  • 24、One Bite at a Time

One summer day when I was heading for the teaching building, I met Philip, one of my colleagues ( ), who worked in the same office with me. Beside him stood another young man. Philip introduced me to the young man, named Stephen. He told me that Stephen would take one of my classes Introduction to American History. Stephen asked if my class was going to be hard. I felt he was worried about failing before the opening day of classes. We talked about what the class would cover and I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with fear.

Then I remembered a classical dialogue: Question: “How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a time.”

I told him to deal with his work that way — to do all his assignment (作业) and to hand them in on time. I added that most successful students I knew made a timetable in order to plan their study well.

As time went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. He had difficulty in study when he was in the middle school. Family members, including his mother, kept telling him that he was a failure. He told me that before coming to our college no one had believed he had much potential (潜力).

Stephen didn’t become an “A” student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignment on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing course after course he began to build up bit of self-respect.

Every time I saw him, he would brighten up and say, “One bite at a time.” He told his friends that he was succeeding when he was supposed to be failing. His secret, he said, was that he was practising what I taught him before classes ever started: “Take it one bite at a time.”

1What is the relationship between the writer and Stephen?

A.Father and son. B.Teacher and student.

    C.Classmates. D.Colleagues.

2To plan their study well, most successful students   .

    A.made a timetable B.chose many courses

C.asked teachers questions D.took notes carefully

3Stephen’s story mainly tells us that   .

A.it is hard to pass courses in college B.we all need good luck to make a success

C.bad things can turn out to be good sometimes D.taking one bite at a time can help students succeed

High-speed trains, Alipay, shared bikes and online payment are seen as the new Four Great Inventions of China by young foreigners, according to a video survey (调查) by Beijing Foreign Studies University. In the video, young people from different countries along Belt and Road Routes (一带一路) were asked to name great inventions that influenced their lives in China. The following is what they said from 4 young people of them.

    Justin

I’m from Romania. China is really a great country and its high-speed railways are very fast, easy and tidy. It takes me only about 4 hours from Beijing to Shanghai by train. It saves a lot of time and it’s cheaper than the airplane. I wish we would have high-speed trains in our country someday.

I’m from Nepal. I always go out by bike. Bicycle-sharing system (系统) allows people to borrow a bike from point “A”and return it at point “B”. It’s not only cheap but also a low-carbon (低碳的) and healthy way of life. I like it very much.

My life in Beijing is quite different from that in India. Here in China, I seldom take money with me when I go out. I can pay for almost everything by Alipay. It’s really amazing. However, in India, if you don’t take the wallet with you, you’ll get into trouble.

You can find many wonderful things that we don’t have in Thailand. We don’t have Alipay or other online payment apps. I can buy almost everything without stepping out of the doors in China. If only I could bring these technologies to my country!

【1】Justin thinks the high- speed railways in China are ________.

    A.fast and tidy

    B.cheap and low-carbon

    C.easy but expensive

    D.fast but crowded

【2】“A” and “B” in Yala’s words refer to (指代) ________.

    A.two bikes

    B.two riders

    C.two systems

    D.two places

【3】According to the passage, we can know that ________.

A.people in Romania often take high-speed railways

B.Thailand also has Alipay and other online payment apps

C.the survey was made by Beijing Foreign Studies University

D.many Chinese students were asked to take part in the survey

  • 27、   When you are trying to make friends, you’ll probably meet someone who just doesn’t like you, though you’ve never done anything personally to him or her. What should you do? Here’s some advice.

Gossip (流言蜚语) can make meeting new people difficult, especially when people hear something bad about you. It can stop someone from getting to know you at all. When you are in a situation like this, it feels awful. However, you should just be yourself instead of working hard to try to win them over. In time, they will see that the gossip about you is wrong. Or, they may choose to believe it. Don’t worry about it and move on by friending the people who deserve (值得) to have you in their life.

You’d think that your friend’s friends would also become your friends. But it doesn’t work that way. Sometimes people are happy with the friendship they have, and they aren’t interested in adding any more. If someone chooses not to be friends with you just because you’re new to the group, it’s fine. There is nothing wrong about you or them.

An even more difficult situation is when someone has actually met you and just doesn’t like you. Every joke you make is taken the wrong way. Every time you try to do something nice, they find fault (找茬). As much as it hurts, accept that not everyone is going to be your friend. Don’t take it personally. These things could happen to everyone. There are just some people you’re not going to make friends with.

In friendship, it’s important to focus on the bright sides with people. If someone doesn’t want to be your friend, that’s okay. Don’t get mad at them because it’s their choice. Instead, give your time and attention to the people that are interested in hanging out with you.

1When people choose to believe the gossip about you, you should ________.

A.try to stop the spread of the gossip

B.tell the truth to other people

C.forget about it and move on

2Why don’t people want to make new friends sometimes?

A.Because they think it’s a waste of time making new friends.

B.Because they are satisfied with the friends they have now.

C.Because they worry that a new friend will influence their old friendship.

3What does the underlined sentence “Don’t take it personally.” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.You shouldn’t share it with others.

B.You shouldn’t deal with it in person.

C.You shouldn’t be too serious about it.

4Which of the following suggestions is NOT mentioned in paragraph 5?

A.Spend time hanging out with those who like you.

B.Pay more attention to others’ advantages in friendship

C.Show your anger to people who don’t want to be your friends.

5The writer mainly (主要) wants to tell people ________.

A.how to avoid being hurt by gossip

B.how to be popular with our friends

C.what to do when we’re not liked by others
