24、
Zhang Guimei is a teacher and principal of Huaping Girls’ High School in Lijiang City. The school is the first full-tuition-free high school in China, helping poor girls continue their studies after completing the nine-year education. In the past 12 years, Zhang has helped over 1,600 girls.
Zhang moved to Yunnan at the age of 17. Later, she grew up to be a teacher. In 1996, she voluntarily moved to teach in the mountainous Huaping. But the next year, she got seriously sick and had no money to pay for the surgery. Thanks to the local government and people, she was able to get the necessary treatment. “I told myself I must live on. I fought the disease to see if I could survive. And I remembered deeply in my heart that I must repay this love from those who helped me,” Zhang said.
Driven by the idea of opening a free high school for girls in 2002, Zhang began a six-year journey looking for funds and donations. In 2008, Zhang was finally able to realize her dream and Huaping Girls’ High school was set up.
Over the 12 years, Zhang has given all of the donations and most of her salary, totaling more than one million yuan, to the school and the education of the young girls in the area.
“It is she that gives us girls from the mountainous areas the chance to see the world outside,” said Yang Qian, a college student who graduated from Zhang’s school.

25、Flow like the river of change
Little stream ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean,’’ she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If a breeze(微风)can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, ‘‘That’s because a breeze can fly, but I can’t.”
“That’s because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate(蒸发)into the breeze, and it can take you across,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea. “The breeze can carry the vapor(蒸汽)across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again,” said the desert. “And whether you’re a river or vapor, your nature never changes.” Hearing this, the little stream went into the open arms of the breeze. It carried her to the next stage of her life.
The course of our lives is like the experience of the little stream. If you want to go through difficulties in your life to head for success, you should also change the way you are.

26、The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of (短缺) water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can’t drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use the 3%--- the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted.
Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid a serious water shortage (短缺) later on?
First we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next?
The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it’s already used in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we’ll be in no danger of drying up.

27、Ever since I was a child, my mouth has caused me trouble. I'm not a bad person; I have a hard time learning when to keep my mouth closed. My mom has told me again and again, "Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you continue to be this rude, you will get into big trouble."It's been a problem at school several times too when teachers have told me something I didn't want to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself. One day in English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind me. It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual. I said ever so nicely, "Nathaniel, would you be quiet?" Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted "Nathaniel, shut up!" For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other. "At least I don't have an ugly lazy eye like you!" I shouted.I knew this would upset him deep inside. It would hurt his feelings and shut him up. What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab me as he shouted, "That's it! That's it!" Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in my seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before. Later on, we were taken to the principal's office. There, Mr. Black, the principal, told us to discuss the matter. It wasn't until then that I finally found that when I hurt someone physically, the wounds eventually heal. But when I hurt them with my words, sometimes the pain (痛苦) never goes away. At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel. When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying. I began to think about how often what I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me, he'll tell me when to keep my mouth closed.

28、 Blame(责备) is one of the biggest problems that we meet in everyday life. 【1】 And when that doesn't happen, we blame other people, places or events that we think are the causes of our unhappiness.
Everything we feel comes from within us. 【2】
If we create unhappiness for ourselves, the world will show us that unhappiness, but if we create joy, peace, and love for ourselves, this is what we will get back.
Can blame solve any problems? 【3】 When people did something hat makes us angry, afraid or hurt, we are doing nothing more than showing them the anger we feel inside.
We have choices about things that make us unhappy. We sometimes prefer to take the easier choices, the ones that keep us in our comfort zone(地带). 【4】 Sometimes we just have to go beyond our comfort zone, which may mean facing something we don't like. Perhaps we feel like a victim(受害者) and don't stand up for ourselves or speak up when we feel that people don't respect us. Maybe we are afraid of a situation, so we run away from it, instead of facing it with inner strength.
