四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.

To remember word better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear or read something. It goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized. When you put away a book-or memory- you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.

How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

1In the writer's opinion, students can't remember words because_____.

A.they have memory problems B.they are too worried

    C.they don’t use a proper way D.they don't like to study

2Which is TRUE about memory according to the passage?

    A.Short-term memory is seldom used

B.What we see goes into long-term memory first.

C.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.

D.We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.

3The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refers to_____.

A.everything in life B.something you’ve seen, heard or read

    C.short-term memory D.long-term memory

4This passage mainly tells us about_____.

A.language students' problems in study B.how to make the meaning of words stronger

C.short-term and long-term memory D.how to improve ways to remember words

  • 25、   The world's first hydrogen-powered(氢动力) trains have begun running in Germany last month. The new trains will run 100-kilometer trips and can travel up to 140 kilometers an hour.

A French railroad company called Alstom built two hydrogen-powered trains. Teams in Germany and France cooperated on the project, which was supported by the German government. The new train model, called the Coradia iLint, signals the beginning of efforts in Germany and other nations to move away from pollution-producing diesel(柴油) trains.

Compared(相比较) with diesel trains, the Coradia iLint is designed to run on non-electrified train lines with low levels of noise. It uses a process that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electrical power. If the system produces more energy than the train needs at that time, it can store the extra energy in batteries. The only emissions(排放物)are water and steam.

A single tank of hydrogen can run a Coradia iLint train for about 1,000 kilometers. This is very similar to the distance a diesel-powered train can run on with a single tank.

Hydrogen-powered trains cost more than diesel trains to build. But Alstom officials say the operating costs are much lower. The company plans to provide another 14 Coradia iLint trains by the year 2021. Several other European countries have also expressed interest in developing hydrogen train systems. France has already said it wants its first hydrogen train to be operated by 2022.

1What's the topic of the passage?

    A. A new kind of train

    B. Diesel(柴油) trains

    C. Water and steam

    D. A French railroad company

2Compared with diesel trains, what's the advantage of the Coradia iLint?

    A. The Coradia iLint uses electrical power.

    B. The Coradia iLint can store the extra energy in batteries.

    C. The Coradia iLint is designed to run with low levels of noise.

    D. All of the above.

3How many Coradia iLint trains in total will the Alstom have by the year 2021?

    A. Two                                  B. Fourteen                                  C. Twelve                                  D. Sixteen

4According to the passage, we can infer that __________.

    A. Alstom is the name of hydrogen-powered(氢动力) train.

    B. The project was supported by the French government.

    C. A diesel-powered train can run about 1,000 kilometers with a single tank.

    D. Only one European country has interest in developing hydrogen train systems.
