24、 Walter Dean Myers, born on August 12, 1937, was an American writer of children's books.
He was known for young adult literature(文学). He wrote more than 100 books, including picture books and non-fiction. "I care about writing for young people because I remember how much I needed help and guidance(指导)at that time in my life,”Myers said in his book.
Myers loved writing. He got up at five o'clock every morning. He worked at home in a small office that used to be his son's bedroom.
Myers would first write an outline(提纲)for every book. He called this prewriting. He imagined what the story would be and write down ideas in a notebook. To make sure there are enough actions and dialogue for a good story, he thought of 30 scenes. He wrote a short description of each scene in his notebook.
He also cut out pictures of real people and put them on his office walls. He looked at those pictures and came up with ideas. Once he knew what the story would be and who the characters were, he began to write the book. He wrote five pages a day on his computer.
Myers usually worked on three books at a time. When he was not prewriting or writing a book, he might be rewriting something he had already completed. Then he would send the story to his agent(经纪人). He or she made suggestions for the story. After these final changes were made, the book was published and made its way to bookstores and libraries.
By that time, Myers would begin to write his next book. "I want to do the best that I can do with my writing,”said Myers.

25、If you’re working to become better or hoping to make a change, you’ll probably hear your family and friends say “go big or go home”. But sometimes big goals can shoot you in the foot. So, is it good to set high expectations?
Having high expectations could be beneficial. It can motivate (激励) you and increase your productivity. When you have high expectations for something, you’ll probably behave in ways which can help make your expectations come true. For example, if you believe that you’re able to score an A in a test, you will probably spend a lot of time working on it. And when you have to complete a written task before the deadline, having expectations on yourself can motivate you to keep on going. Another benefit of setting high expectations is that as you start meeting your expectations, you’ll be even more motivated to set higher goals for yourself. In addition, having high expectations on yourself doesn’t only benefit you. You’re likely to encourage others to be more productive! While there’s plenty of good that comes from setting high expectations, going overboard and being unrealistic in expectations can be detrimental.
Having high expectations sometimes can cause psychological (心理的) problems, such as worry and unhappiness. The findings of a study showed that a group of students who were expected to do perfectly by their parents experienced serious stress and anxiety (焦虑). Great expectations can also lead to great disappointment. This is especially true when you set expectations on other people whose actions you cannot control. For example, if you’re feeling alone and you call up your friends, you surely expect them to make you feel better. When this fails to happen, you will feel disappointed and displeased with your friends. To avoid this situation, you should accept your friends for who they are and set your expectations around reality.
It is hard to manage expectations, but the main goal is to find the perfect balance in setting a more realistic and achievable expectation. Learn to let go of things, especially when they don’t turn out the way you hoped. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to celebrate your victories no matter how small they are.
【1】If you have a high expectation on yourself, you will probably _________.
A.discourage others
B.work hard to realize it
C.be more confident than before
D.have high expectations on others
【2】The word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________ ”.
A.harmful
B.unusual
C.disappointing
D.impossible
【3】The writer probably agrees that _________.
A.it’s wise to ask your friends to help you set expectations
B.stress is very likely to help you achieve your expectations
C.parents should avoid setting expectations on their children
D.we should set expectations on others according to the reality
【4】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To offer advice on how to realize expectations.
B.To explain why people like to set high expectations.
C.To lead people to take a right attitude towards expectations.
D.To encourage people to set high expectations for themselves.
26、You have tried too hard but you don’t succeed; you’ve made all your efforts but you don’t get the results you want. What should you do? Give up and turn over a new page. Drop it like it’s hot, and run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.
Do you feel surprised? What is wrong with giving up? Oh yes, we all have been trained and asked to work hard to achieve our dreams, and that is a good thing. The problem comes out when all these inspirational quotes (励志名言) start confusing us.
These messages tell people not to give up, but they don’t tell you that it should only apply to (适用于) your true dreams. They tell people to “try and try again” until they succeed, but that amount of effort should only be put toward what people really want in life and they should never give up no matter what life goals they have. The rest is all just there to confuse you, distract (使分心) you, give you a headache and sadness, so don’t let it happen.
If you are really not good at something, give it up and try to do something you like. Once you do something you like, you won’t feel bored and also won’t give it up. You know clearly what you want even the road to success is hard. So you need to know what you’re good at. To find your talent, you need to observe (观察) the things around you and write down the things you’re interested in on your notebook. Then you can search them on the Internet and know more about them. Asking your parents or friends for help is also a good idea because they can see something you can’t. They can help you know yourself clearly.
Try to discover your talent, your ability and your skills. Find out what you are good at, what makes you happy and then work on it. If you do, no one would have to tell you or inspire you not to give up because when you love something, you keep trying until you get it right and the enthusiasm flows from within. Don’t worry about what people will say or think. It’s your life, so you have to love it and be your own boss.
