26、A kindergarten (幼儿园) teacher decided to have her class play a game. The teacher told each student to bring a plastic bag with a few potatoes in it to school. Each student would “name” their potatoes after people they did not like. So the number of potatoes would be different depending on how many people each student disliked.
The next day, all the students brought their potatoes to school. Some kids had just one or two potatoes, while others had as many as five or six. The teacher then told the children that they would have to carry their potatoes with them wherever they went for one week. The children didn’t understand why but they followed their teacher’s words.
Several days passed by. Some of the students started to complain (抱怨), as their potatoes began to rot (腐烂) and smelt bad. The students who carried more potatoes also complained about how heavy their bags were.
One week later, the game was over. The teacher asked, “How did you feel about carrying around your potatoes for a week?”
The students complained once again. The teacher simply smiled and said, “This is what it’s like to carry hate in your heart. You have to carry it with you wherever you go. If you can’t tolerate (忍受) carrying rotten potatoes for one week, can you imagine having hate in your heart for a whole lifetime?”
It can be tiring to carry hate in your heart for a whole lifetime. Forgive (原谅) others and move on with your life.

27、 “All right, are you ready? Okay, the camera’s rolling.” I was really realizing my dream. I stood inside the empty school hallway on a spring afternoon. In my slightly shaking hand, I held the script On Patrol. “For this scene,” I explained, “all I need you to do is walk quietly.” In front of the camera was my best friend, Gavin, wearing a blue uniform. “Would it be funnier if I looked into the camera?” Gavin suggested. “Hmm,” I said. “Yeah, you’re right. Let’s do it that way.” This was certainly not a Hollywood blockbuster. I didn’t have a producer, a script director, or even something as simple as a light setup. The only equipment(设备)I had was my camera and my tripod(三脚架), but they were enough to make my dream come true. “Okay, are you good?” I asked. Gavin nodded his head. “Okay. Action!” I said.
Since as far back as my preschool years, movies have been my life. Some people may think back to their childhood as they hear the sound of table tennis or see a baseball flying into the blue sky during a backyard game. Some people may smell the salty air of the ocean during a family vacation. As for me, I hear the sound of the video recorder, as it replays the tape of a video. The movie I watched most as a child was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. From then on, I watched as many movies as I could and my mom and dad often said to me, “Nathan, you need to stop watching movies and go outside.”
When I began high school, I was considering what I should choose as a job. After months of not having any idea of what I would become, an idea appeared: if I love movies so much, why not make it a career? During high school, experience seemed to be key in turning my dream into a reality. With this realization, I wrote my first short film, On Patrol, a ten-minute silent video about a hall monitor trying to stop someone from throwing rubbish at a school. After I finished my first script, I was very excited. Then I was thinking, “Now it is up to me to make my first movie.”
The short script was filmed over the course of a weekend at my school. The hallway was dark, giving off a cold atmosphere(气氛). It was perfect for my movie. The filming process was anything but perfect. The lighting never matched up; my cheap camera battery kept dying, which forced me to record on an iphone. Though I was very tired, I was still learning. I was learning to work with my actors and listen to their ideas. I was learning to tell a story like a professional filmmaker. When filming was finished, it took another week of editing(剪辑)for my first film.
It was not a famous movie, but it was my step-ping-stone. Now looking back at On Patrol still gives me a dream that could direct more good movies. Along with the film, the memories of filming remain in my brain. For me, it was the moment when I was no longer a silly kid with an interest in movies. Instead, I was a director. Watching my first movie not only gives me a laugh, but also gives me the encouragement to continue running after a love I have had since I put Spider-Man into my video recorder many years ago.

A.Learning to Make Movies.
