25、 The Songkran Festival is traditional Thai New Year’s Day and is celebrated from April 13 to April 15. It is also called the “Water Festival” because people believe that water will wash away bad luck. Also, this festival is for rain because it is held in the hottest season.
In the past, on this day, people threw small drops of water on monks(僧人) and old people to bless them. Nowadays, besides the old tradition, people also throw water on whoever walks past their houses or walks down the street. Everyone gets wet, but it is all in a spirit of friendliness, blessing and fun — even among people who usually have great disagreements. People who get wet actually do not get angry because they know that it is a tradition.
On this day, everywhere in Thailand, people celebrate and enjoy the festival. People will carry water to the temples to soak the stone figures(石像), using brushes. They also give very good food to the monks. Chiang Mai Province, which is in the northern part of Thailand, is especially lively, and animals and birds are often set free from their cages.
Volunteers can stay in Bangkok(曼谷) for the celebrations or travel to smaller communities to take part in local activities. What’s more, people can enjoy public events, such as beauty contests and marching bands during this festival which ends on April 15. In recent years, the number of foreigners in Thailand has increased rapidly, especially during the festival.

26、 The older I get, the more I learn that our quality of life doesn’t depend on what we’ve been given. Instead, our quality of life depends on what we choose to create. Every day, we are creating our life. We are choosing how to spend our time, what words to say out loud, and how to care for ourselves. And with all these choices, we are creating our life.
Creating a good life requires you to choose how you spend your time well. You should be doing things that give you pleasure or satisfaction. But first, you have to find out what it is that you enjoy doing. For example, I enjoy reading, writing, and ballroom dancing. On days when I’m able to do at least one of those activities, I feel quite good. However, if my free time is taken up by serving other people’s interests, I feel frustrated. That is why you have to guard your free time. We all have parts of our day that are spent doing things that we have to do, such as our job or schoolwork. So, our limited free time is valuable indeed. But our free time is where we have the opportunity to create our life.
As a result, the questions you should be asking yourself every day are these: What kind of day am I creating today? Will I spend my time arguing with others and feeling frustrated? Or, will I do something with my time that I truly enjoy, such as reading a book or going dancing with my friends?
We have so many beautiful choices when it comes to spending our free time. The bottom line is this: We choose what kind of life we will live; how we choose to spend our free time is in our hands. Whether we spend our time with kind or unkind people is in our hands. And the choices that we make decide the kind of life that we live. This week, consider whether you’re making the right choices so that you can create a better life for yourself. Make sure you plan your free time carefully.
A good life doesn’t just happen – it’s something that we must create.

a Snails have very special sleeping habits. Unlike humans’ 24-hour cycle (周期) of activity and sleep, snails sleep for 15 hours and then start 30 hours of activity. They almost don’t sleep at night because it’s wetter. This lets them move easier from place to place. But when it’s too dry, hot or cold, snails sleep for a long time. Sometimes they may sleep for up to three years! | b Toilet paper comes with a high cost for the environment. We cut down around 27,000 trees every single day-just to make toilet paper. Yes, you read that correctly. We act like there would always be enough trees. But we never think that it is causing big problems for the Earth. Toilet paper is the reason for 15 percent of global deforestation. |
