24、We’ll finally grow up someday, leaving our parents and facing the challenges in life. Parents may not be able to solve every problem for us. Instead, we should have enough life skills to deal with the problems that we meet.
This is what our country tries to do now—helping more students get working spirit. To stress (强调) the importance of hardworking spirit education among students of different ages, the Communist Party of China Central Committee (中国共产党中央委员会) and the State Council (国务院) released (发布) a guideline (指导纲要) in 2020.
The guideline calls for students to respect work. Students should learn basic life skills and form good working habits through such education.
The government has been trying to stress the importance of hardworking spirit education. But this has been overlooked in recent years. Many teens do not value the importance of working hard, and they are not interested in doing so.
According to a study of nearly 3,000 students in 25 schools in Hunan last month, only 20 percent of primary and middle school students help with everyday chores around the house.
Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard, the guideline says. Primary and middle schools should provide students with hardworking spirit classes every week. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience. For example, schools can teach children how to plant trees on Tree-Planting Day.
As children’s first teachers, parents should also encourage children to learn how to do chores at home. Students should master one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own clothes and tidying their rooms.

25、
It is said that as the population of a city grows, so do its problems. Pollution, too many cars, and crowded streets are just a few of the problems. One way to deal with these problems is city trains. Traveling to different parts of a city by train means fewer cars and buses on our roads, cleaner air and more open streets. In recent years, cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai have all built city train lines.
The first city train line in China was built in Beijing. The oldest part of the train line, from Beijing Zhan to Ping Guo Yuan was opened in 1969. Its length was 23.6 kilometers. With the development of the city after 1980, more trains are needed. A new train line was built to help move people around the city center. The 16-kilometer-long “circle line” was finished in 1987. Since that time even more train stations have been built and today the train lines in the city are over 50 kilometers long.

26、You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes(强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
※ If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to(与……有联系) the way you are facing.
※ If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree—something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
※ Simplify(简化) the way for finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!

27、Students enjoyed the latest science lesson given by astronauts on board China’s Tiangong space station on Wednesday, watching them show physical phenomena(现象)in the spacecraft. All members of the Shenzhou XI, appeared on television screens watched by millions of students across China at 4 pm, saying they were happy to share scientific facts about space flight with students. During the 41-minute lesson, the astronauts carried out four experiments(实验)to show physical phenomena only possible in micro-gravity(微重力).
In the first experiment of the class, Wang Yaping used a ball. “It looks like an ice ball, but as I touch it, I can feel that it’s warm,” Wang told the class.
Another micro-gravity experiment showed how to separate oil from water in space. Wang prepared a small bottle of oil and water, which were separated at the beginning, while the students on the ground also had such bottles, allowing them to follow the experiment. The teacher in space and the students on earth all shook bottles to mix oil and water into a fluid(液体)mixture. The students found their mixture gradually separated into oil and water again, but the fluid in space remained as a mixture.
At last, WangYaping used a toy of Bing Dwen Dwen, the popular mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, to show how objects fly in a weightless environment.
