  • 25、When Shanghai introduced a new rubbish sorting policy(垃圾分类政策) in July last year, the people in this city took some time to get used to it. They joked that every time they took out their litter, the aunt standing by the bins would ask, “What kind of litter are you?”

Starting on May 1, Beijing joined many Chinese cities by introducing a new rubbish sorting policy. People should sort their litter into four groups: kitchen, recyclable, harmful and other waste. These groups are represented(代表) by four different colors of rubbish bins—green, blue, red and gray. Those who fail to sort their litter correctly in those cities may face fines(罚款) of up to 200 yuan.

The way Beijing sorts its rubbish sounds different from cities like Shanghai and Qingdao. These cities use four different groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Although their names are different, the groups are actually the same. Wet rubbish in Shanghai is, in fact, kitchen rubbish. And dry rubbish is the same as other waste.

Many people don’t know how to sort their litter correctly, so Beijing government is offering online guidelines. If people don’t know how to throw away rubbish, they can search for it on the WeChat account Guanchenglishi (管城理市) to find out. By searching a key word or taking a photo, people can find out which group their litter belongs to at once.

【1】Kitchen rubbish is called ________ in Shanghai.

    A.wet rubbish

    B.dry rubbish

    C.recyclable rubbish

    D.harmful rubbish

【2】Which statement is TRUE according to this passage?

A.Rubbish sorting is being carried out all over the country.

B.Rubbish sorting started in Beijing on May 1.

C.In Qingdao, people who don’t sort their litter correctly may be fined 200 yuan.

D.People in Beijing dislike rubbish sorting policy.

【3】Which rubbish bin should the rotten-fruit(腐烂的水果) be put in?

    A.Green bins.

    B.Blue bins.

    C.Gray bins.

    D.Red bins.

【4】What can we infer(推断) from the passage?

A.People are made to sort their litter and they are unhappy.

B.Four cities are using the new rubbish sorting policy in China.

C.Many people had some problems with rubbish sorting at first.

D.People should sort their litter into four groups.

  • 26、Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how terrible it can be. Highs winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less then an hour.

A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia’s east coast at the end of March. Winds as fast as 263km/h destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns, while rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, and at least eight people died. The cyclone lasted for about three days, but the flooding is still happening two weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes others years to rebuild.

A tropical cyclone (热带气旋) begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into the clouds from the ocean. Because Earth is rotating(旋转), the clouds start to spiral(盘旋上升). That is why the tropical cyclone has a curved(弯曲的) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator(赤道) because Earth’s rotation isn’t big enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon(台风)or cyclone.

So what’s the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.

All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Oceans around the US, it is called hurricane. The same type of storm in the North Pacific near China is called a typhoon and cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.

1Which of the following about Cyclone Debbie is NOT true?

    A. It hit Australia’s east coast in March.

    B. The wind speed reached 263 km/h.

    C. It caused a huge loss for coastal towns.

    D. The flooding stopped after three days.

2How does a tropical cyclone happen?

    A. When a group of thunderstorms meet warm, tropical waters.

    B. When the water in the ocean flows in a curved shape.

    C. When a group of thunderstorms meet near an Equator.

    D. When the wind speed reaches over 120 km/h

3How can we tell the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon?

    A. From the time it takes place.   B. From where it takes place.

    C. From how it takes place.   D. From how many people it kills

4Which can be the best title for the passage?

    A. An Introduction of Cyclone Debbie

    B. How a Tropical Cyclone Forms

    C. Cyclone’s Deadly Force (力量)

    D. The Difference between a Cyclone, a Hurricane, and a Typhoon

  • 27、   In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Harvard University,  aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted (领养的) and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, 1 gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo — a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time, but I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit. But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day. It's a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

【1】What does the underlined word "occupied" in the fourth paragraph mean?

    A.nervous

    B.busy

    C.attracted

    D.confident

【2】Why did the author leave school in her second year of college?

A.She wanted to study by herself.

B.She got married and built a big family.

    C.She suffered from serious illness.

D.She decided to look after her grandma.

【3】What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5?

A.Her family life was tiring yet she enjoyed it

B.She was tired of taking care of her children.

    C.She wanted to remain a full-time housewife.

D.She was so confused that she couldn't make a correct choice.

【4】What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.Failure is the mother of success.

B.Little by little, one goes far.

    C.Every coin has two sides.

    D.Well begun, half done.
