A businessman’s son wanted to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest man. The boy walked through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain where the wise man lived.

When he entered a room, the boy was so surprised: businessmen coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a small band playing sweet music, and all kinds of delicious dishes on a large table.

The wise man talked with everyone. The boy had to wait for two hours until it was his turn.

With enough patience, the wise man listened to the reason for the boy’s visit, but he was too busy to explain to him the secret of happiness. He suggested that the boy take a walk around his palace and come back in two hours.

“However,” he added, handing the boy a teaspoon with two drops of oil in it, “while you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil go out.”

The boy thought he must follow what the old man had said, so he always kept his eyes fixed on the spoon while walking. At last he returned to the wise man.

“So,” asked the wise man,“did you see the famous paintings in the hall? Did you see the garden that took the master gardener ten years to create?” Embarrassed, the boy said that he had noticed nothing. All his attention was on the spoon.

“OK. Now go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the man. Now more relaxed, the boy took the spoon and walked again through the palace. After his return, he exactly reported all that he had seen.

“But where is the oil?” asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon, the boy realized that he had spilled (溅) it all.

  • 25、It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail (详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded(全面的) and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements(成就) of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

【1】People with little education usually ________.

    A. spend a long time in school

    B. have a good chance to get a job

    C. spend the best years to choose jobs

    D. have fewer chances to get a good job

【2】 The earliest education was probably to _______.

    A. make a man lead a better life

    B. teach a man to write and think

    C. make people get a way of living

    D. teach people to read good books

【3】 It is expected that educated people will be able to ________.

    A. accept education as a way of livin

    B. take an interest in the whole world

    C. develop their abilities to make plays

    D. learn subjects like language and math

【4】The passage mainly tells us that ________.

    A. education should make a man improve

    B. people can get education in a short time

    C. people should be able to get better paying jobs

    D. all subjects are so important for a way of living

  • 26、 I came to study in the USA a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I injured (伤害) in an accident, because after the accident I had to see a doctor --- and to court (法院).

After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $ 200 for what he had done. I was very surprised. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible (负责) for my injury. I’d have to have a good lawyer (律师). And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another, yet he charged me $ 115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $ 215.

My lawyer knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided not to ask for him again. And he made me pay him $ 770.

Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Because of my inexperience, I told the insurance company (保险公司)the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time, and I left without getting a cent.

My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship or honor. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

【1】 The writer’s roommate offered to help him because ______.

    A. he thought it was a chance to make some money

    B. he felt sorry for the writer

    C. he knew the doctor was a very good one

    D. he wanted the writer to have a good lawyer

2A good doctor is necessary for the writer to ______.

    A. be properly treated

    B. talk with the person responsible for the accident

    C. become healthy before he leaves America

    D. finally get the responsible party to pay for his injury

3The word charge in this passage means “______”.

    A. be responsible B. be careful

    C. ask as a price D. get an answer

4What can you get from the story?

    A. Going to court is something very common in America.

    B. Money is more important than other things in the USA.

    C. There are more bad sides in America than good sides.

    D. One must be very careful while driving a car.

  • 27、Gloria is a famous hostess of a TV station. When she was 15, she happened to walk into a bookstore in her hometown and began looking at the books on the shelves. The storekeeper

asked if she'd like a job. She needed to save for college, so she said yes.

During college she would do many other jobs: she served coffee in the student union, was a hotel cleaner and even made maps for the Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most satisfying jobs.

One day a woman came into the bookstore and asked Gloria for books on cancer. The woman seemed worried. Gloria showed her practically everything they had and found other books they could order.
