  • 25、The stone walls, the courtyard, clothes hung on a clothesline … At first sight, you may think they’re real. But in fact, you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of miniatures (微观模型) of Chinese rural (农村的) houses in the 1990s made by a miniature artist.

Feng Jiangtao, 32, has made more than 40 miniatures for people from around the country to make a copy of the old houses that carry their memories.

In April 2021, Feng made a miniature of an old shop in his hometown — Yongzhou, Hunan Province. It showed black tiles (瓦片) and gray walls, a small TV playing cartoons and a bulb giving out a warm, bright glow (光).

He then posted a video of this miniature online and it became popular. People from around the country called him, asking him to make models of their old houses by using photos they provided.

Making miniatures is not easy. It usually takes Feng about 10 days to finish a miniature. He makes them in the ratio of 1:30 to the home’s real size. To better remake the old house, he uses real building materials, such as cement (水泥), wood, and soil and then focuses on how to make it look old.

Some parts are more complicated (复杂的), such as making tiles. Since there are no such small-sized tiles, he needs to cut them out of black cardboard or make small models with tile powder.

One of his customers, a post-90s girl, once asked him to make a copy of an old house in her hometown Jiangxi. She used to live there with her parents. She wanted to give the model to her mother to keep the memory of her dead father.

It is the old house that is miniaturized. However, it enlarges (放大) the warm family affection (亲情) and love and treasures the good old days that are gone forever,” Feng told China Daily.

【1】How did Feng Jiangtao become famous?

A.He made many videos about old houses.

B.His video about a model of a shop became popular.

C.He made many models that were quite complicated.

【2】What are Paragraphs 5 and 6 mainly about?

A.The normal size of a miniature.

B.The complicated parts of a miniature.

    C.What materials Feng uses.

    D.How Feng makes his models.

【3】Where can we best put “Every miniature model has a story behind it.” in the passage?

    A.①

    B.②

    C.③

    D.④

【4】How can we describe Feng’s works?

    A.Warm and memorable.

    B.Small and easy to make.

    C.Modern and expensive.

    D.Large and beautiful.

  • 26、The tiger shark is given the scientific name Galeocerdo cuvier. It is called the tiger shark because of the unique dark stripes on its back. It is said to be the second largest shark after the great white shark. It is popularly known as a “sea tiger”.

This shark weighs between 850 and 1,400 pounds. Its length is usually between 3.25 and 4.25 meters. Bigger sharks can grow as long as 5.5 meters and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Females are known to be larger than males.

This shark has dark stripes. These markings gradually die away as the animals grow up.

It is an excellent swimmer, and the shape of its head makes the shark move to any side very quickly. It has very sharp and powerful teeth that can even tear through a tortoise shell. The tiger shark feeds on a variety of food such as squid, sea snakes, seals, dolphins, sea turtles, fish, other species of sharks and sea birds as well.

It has sensory organs called lateral lines which run down its both sides. These lines help the shark find movement in the water. When hunting its prey, it swims very fast. Besides, it also has excellent eyesight and a strong sense of smell to find blood in water. It is also known to swallow objects such as cans and tires when in a hurry to attack its prey. Due to its size, it needs to eat a lot.

Generally, a female can give birth to a large number of babies ranging from 10 to 80. The eggs form and develop inside the female and are carried by her. So the babies can be up to 1.5 meters long at birth, and immediately can hunt prey.

【1】Galeocerdo cuvier is called the tiger shark because it ________.

A.is the strongest shark in the sea

B.can hunt a tiger as its prey

C.shows the same characteristics as a tiger

D.has special dark stripes on its back

【2】What can we infer about the tiger shark’s babies from the passage?

A.They move near the equator in warm months

B.They are usually given birth to in the Southern Hemisphere.

C.They can be independent of their mother after birth.

D.They usually grow very small in their mother’s body.

【3】We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.the tiger shark’s sense of smell plays an important role in catching prey

B.dark stripes become clearer as the tiger shark grows up X

C.the tiger shark’s sensory organs help it swim fast

D.the tiger shark doesn’t eat a lot in general though its size is big

  • 27、“How are you?”is a nice question. It’s a friendly way for Americans to greet each other. But“How are you?”is also a very unusual question. It often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks“How are you?”hopes to hear the answer“Fine”even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. In fact, they are not really a question or an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello”or“Hi”.

Sometimes people also don’t say exactly what they mean, For example, when someone asks“Do you agree?”the other person might think,“No,I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say,“I’m afraid …”It’s a nicer way to disagree.

People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many phone talks finish when one person says“I have to go now.”Often, the person who wants to finish the phone call gives an excuse,“Someone’s at the door.”The excuse might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to finish the phone call simply doesn’t want to talk anymore, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.

When they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, thinking of finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it is part of the game of language.

    【题文1】“How are you?”is another way of saying“Hello”or“Hi”.

【题文2】 It is polite to say“No,I disagree. I think you are wrong”if you don’t agree with others.

【题文3】When someone says“I have to go now”on the phone, it means he wants to go on talking.

【题文4】“Someone is at the door ”may be an excuse for finishing a phone call.

【题文5】Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about just because they try to be nice to each other.
