四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、 Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana.  Last year, he taught his students about the world’s rain forests.  They learned that rain forests are important because the plants and animals of the rain forest give us food, wood, and medicine.

Destruction of the world’s rain forests is a serious problem.  Unluckily, rain forests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres per minute!  As part of a class project, Myers’ students bought three acres of rain forest in Central America.  They paid $25 per acre.  The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interested in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rain forest.

So last June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river.  They saw alligators and crocodiles.  In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest.  “The monkeys were not happy that we were in their forest.  They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us,” one of the students said, “It was a great learning experience for all of us,” said Myers.

Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture.  During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities.  They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.

Myers hopes to make the trip every year with a different group of kids.

【1】How much did Myers’ students pay for the rain forest they bought?

    A. $25 B. $75 C. $80 D. $2000

【2】What did Myers and his students do at the beginning of the trip?

    A. They went into the rain forest.

    B. They bought acres of rain forest.

    C. They took a boat ride down a river.

    D. They visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.

【3】The word “Destruction” in paragraph 2 probably means “the process of being ______.”

    A. destroyed   B. developed

    C. described   D. discovered.

【4】When the monkeys saw Myers and his students, they _________.

    A. felt excited B. felt angry

    C. jumped off the trees   D. left the rain forest

【5】 The passage mainly shows that Myers and his students ________.

    A. did something to protect rain forest

    B. wanted to buy the rain forest in Costa Rica

    C. were interested in the culture of Costa Rica

    D. went to the rain forest for various fun activities

  • 25、   Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel “Alice in Wonderland” in detail.

The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.

The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice runs after him, and that is where her adventures begin.

In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.

Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.

To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a situation which makes people feel puzzled. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distractions(分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.

Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating(交配)season. Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of the two, mad as a Hatter is more common.

Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman who is called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.

1Which of the following situations best fits the expression “to fall down a rabbit hole”?

A.When Jack was sitting in the study, he got bored with the homework and felt sleepy.

B.When Sue turned On the TV, she chose to watch her favourite programme as usual.

C.When Jim was looking for a sport book online, he lost himself in reports on superstars.

D.When Lily was thinking about how to solve a math problem, she came up with a good idea.

2According to the passage, the expression “to be mad as a March Hare” .

A.describes how hares behave in March

B.shows hares’ characteristics in a funny way

C.is used more often than the expression mad as a Hatter

D.has the same meaning as the expression mad as a Hatter

3Which of the following characters wants others to obey his or her orders in every situation?

A.Alice. B.The March Hare. C.The Hatter. D.The Queen of  Hearts.

4The writer mainly wants to ________in this passage.

A.introduce a famous novel and its language style

B.introduce a famous writer Lewis Carroll and his novels

C.explain some English expressions from a famous novel

D.explain why many expressions in English come from novels

  • 26、   The view you hold for yourself greatly affects the way you lead your life. It can decide whether you become the person you want to be and whether you achieve the things you value. How does this happen? How can a simple belief have the power to change your psychology(心理) and, as a result, your life?

Believing that your qualities are carved() in stone — the fixed mindset — creates a great need to prove yourself over and over. Some of us are trained in this mindset from an early age. Even as a child, I was focused on being smart, but the fixed mindset was really stamped in by Mrs. Wilson, my sixth-grade teacher. She believed that people’s IQ scores told the whole story of who they were. We were seated around the room in IQ order, and only the highest-IQ students could be trusted to collect homework, or take a note to the principal. She was creating a mindset in which everyone in the class had one important goal-look smart, don’t look stupid.

I’ve seen so many people with this one important goal of proving themselves — in the classroom, in their careers, and in their relationships. Every situation calls for a confirmation of their IQ, personality, or character. Every situation is evaluated(评价): Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or stupid? Will I feel like a winner or a loser?

But doesn’t our society value IQ, personality, and character? Isn’t it normal to want these qualities? Yes, but ...

There’s another mindset, the growth mindset, which is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can develop through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way — in their inborn talents, interests, or characters, everyone can change and grow through efforts and experience. Did you know that Darwin and Tolstoy were considered ordinary children? That the photographer Cindy Sherman, who has been on almost every list of the most important artists of the twentieth century, failed her first photography course? That Geraldine Page, one of our greatest actresses, was advised to give it up for lack of talent?

You can see how the belief that valuable qualities can be developed creates a passion(热情) for learning. Why waste time proving how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide weaknesses instead of overcoming them? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will better you? The passion for improving yourself and sticking to it, even when it’s not going well, is the feature(特征) of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to achieve success during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

1According to Paragraph 5, the example of Darwin and Tolstoy shows that _________

A.success has nothing to do with natural gifts.

B.it’s difficult to predict one’s future success.

C.achievements can be made through hard work.

D.the valuable qualities can encourage people to learn.

2The author strongly believes that we should _________

A.carry out an honest evaluation of our qualities.

B.see success as the only way to prove IQ or talent.

    C.focus on self-development rather than self-proving.

D.believe good things will happen during difficult times.

3The main purpose of the passage is to _________

A.lead people to take the right mindset.

B.advise people to evaluate their mindset.

C.get people to know the influence of mindset.

D.explain the differences between two mindsets.

  • 27、

The mystery stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are famous all over the world.

The detective in his stories is called Sherlock Holmes. He solves mysteries in a most surprising way. His assistant, Dr. Watson, watches with admiration and then writes up the story of the mystery afterwards.

This is a useful story writing skill. Because Watson is not very clever, the story remains a mystery until the end. The readers can sometimes pick up some clues before he does! Then, to make Watson understand the mystery, Holmes has to explain it all, step by step. So we, the readers, get to see it step by step too. Watson is almost as good a character in the story as Sherlock Holmes!

The very first time they meet, Holmes greatly surprises Watson. When they are first introduced, Holmes says to Watson, “How do you do? I see you have been to Afghanistan.”

Watson is too amazed by this. Watson has, indeed, been to Afghanistan. Later, he asks Holmes about it. Holmes explains that there is nothing magical about what he does. He gets to know it all by very, very careful observation (观察) .

    Observation One

Watson was introduced to Holmes as a doctor. Yet Holmes thought that the way he stood and walked made him seem like a soldier. So, this meant he was probably an army doctor.

    Observation Two

Watson’s face was quite dark-skinned. But his wrists (手腕) were pale. So his dark face was probably sun burnt. This meant that he had been to a hot, sunny country. As he was a working doctor, this was not a holiday. He must have gone with the army.

    Observation Three

At the time, the British army had soldiers at bases in many parts of the world. So there were still a lot of places to choose from. However, Holmes saw that Watson looked very tired and he was always holding his left arm, as if it was painful. So, he had probably been with the army to a place where they were fighting. There was only one place where the British army was fighting at that time: Afghanistan.

    【1】Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ________.

    A.writes famous mystery stories

    B.is Sherlock Holmes’s assistant

C.is a detective in mystery stories

【2】The writer most probably created the character, Dr. Watson, to ________.

    A.show Holmes’ careful observation

B.get readers to see the mystery step by step

C.give Holmes help when solving mysteries

【3】The first time they meet, ________.

A.Watson tells Holmes he has been to Afghanistan

B.Holmes explains how he knows Watson has been to Afghanistan

C.Holmes surprises Watson by telling that Watson has been to Afghanistan

【4】From the passage we know that the British army ________ at that time.

    A.only had soldiers in Afghanistan

    B.was fighting with Afghanistan

    C.was fighting with several countries
