四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Five thousand years ago, carrots only grew in Afghanistan (阿富汗) and most were purple. Only a few were orange as they are today! Farmers in the Netherlands (荷兰) were looking for a fruit or vegetable to symbolize their king, William of Orange, and orange carrots were just what they were looking for—they became the ancestors of all modern carrots.

Many plants only grow in certain places on the earth, often deep in the jungle (丛林). The home of potatoes is in the mountains of the Andes in South America. Bananas come from Papua New Guinea and lemons grow wild in China. But once people real ized that many of these plants were good to eat, they took them far from the places where they grew. Fruit, especially, interested thirsty travellers. Arab businessmen transported different fruits and vegetables around the world, such as oranges, which they took from Asia to remote countries such as Spain. The Spanish returned from South America with many new types of food, including chocolate, pepper and corn.

People often had problems deciding what to do with these new fruits and vegetables, or used them for different purposes from today. Carrots were used not as food but as medicine to protect people from poison (毒药) or even (it was believed) to make people fall in love. The first tomatoes and pineapples were grown not as food but to make the garden look pretty. And many people were worried about potatoes—although they are good for us, their leaves are poisonous. In Germany, people only began eating potatoes when the king ordered that people who did not eat them would have their ears and noses cut off!

Today, we are so used to our different types of food that we don’t think about where they came from. But for each pineapple, potato or carrot we eat, there is a long history!

【1】Why did the farmers in the Netherlands prefer orange carrots to purple ones?

A.To serve their king a healthier vegetable.

B.To remind people of their king, William of Orange.

    C.To have a better harvest(丰收).

    D.To live a better life.

【2】________ played an important part in spreading fruits around the world.

    A.Thirsty travelers

    B.Arab traders

    C.Spanish traders

    D.Chinese traders

【3】Which of the following is NOT mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.People today are used to eating carrots to protect themselves from poison.

B.People would rather use the first tomatoes to decorate(装饰) their garden than eat them.

C.People in Germany didn't begin eating potatoes until the king gave an order.

D.Carrots were even believed to make people fall in love.

【4】The structure of the passage may be________.

    (1=Paragraph 1 2=Paragraph 2 3=Paragraph 3 4-Paragraph 4)

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 25、What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generation. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of polite conversation. Yet hidden rules and standards do exist, as long as you take the time to look for them.

    Get to the Point

When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other identifying information. Remember, everybody’s time is precious. If there’s something you want, cut right to the chase. Never send an “Are you there?” without any follow-up messages. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.

    Send the Right Things

Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send personal information by voice message—it is hard to note down. Emojis, GIFs and memes can save the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you.

    Try to Understand

You can always judge a person’s mood by their text messages. If the person you’re talking to says “Good might” or “I’m going to take a shower” that’s probably not what they’re actually going to do, it is just an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone hesitates for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No”. If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them literally(照字面地)(as a smile, a wave or a laugh). For the post-90s and post-00s generation, however, they could be speechlessness.

【1】What can you do if there’s something you want when you’re chatting online according to the passage?

A.Send an “Are you there?” without any follow-up messages.

B.Send a friend request without any other identifying information.

C.Send it directly without any other useless messages.

D.Send your real name without any follow-up message.

【2】What is the passage mainly about?

A.How to get to the point when you' re chatting online.

B.Different good ways of sending the right thing

C.Hidden rules and standards in chatting online.

D.How to understand others through the messages.

【3】What is the writer’s opinion about chatting online?

A.Your text messages on the phone will show what you’re feeling.

B.Using too many emojis while catting will annoy(使恼怒)others.

C.Voice messages make it easier for others to understand you.

D.The ways you use to chat are the same as your parents.
