  • 24、Do you think the tomato is a vegetable or a fruit? Most of us think the tomato is a vegetable, but it is actually a fruit.

There is a most famous Spanish Tomato Festival, which started in 1945. It is celebrated on the last Friday every August. The first people in Europe to eat tomatoes were Italians. They discovered that it’s fantastic to eat spaghetti with tomatoes. The French called them “love apples”. Young men made necklaces of tomato seeds for their lover. The British called the tomato “apples of gold”. However, tomatoes were thought to have poison in England at first. People grew them in their gardens because of their color and look. They even thought that tomatoes caused illness. But they soon got over their fear and began to eat tomatoes.

There are about 80 stones and each is about five meters tall. The stones were 380 kilometers away from where they were made. The ancient people had only wooden tools. To move the stones they probably used tree trunks to roll them along. So it was a wonder to build Stonehenge. Scientists say it took millions of man-hours to move and raise the heavy stones. How did people move these huge pieces of stone from the place so far? No one knows the answer. One record said the great stones were carried to England by huge magical aliens! But we don’t know.

Some scientists believe that Stonehenge was a temple. Some believe it was a place to bury dead people or perhaps it was used to study the stars and the sky at night.
