  • 27、   Years ago, I went to visit one of my dad's friends with him. The host poured a cup of tea and placed it in front of us. Then he thought of something suddenly and hurried into the inner room, leaving the thermos (热水瓶)on the table.

My dad remained sitting still in the living room while I was looking at the flowers outside the window. My father just about to take his cup when the crash came, right there in the sitting room. Something was hopelessly broken.

It was the thermos, which had fallen to the floor. I looked over my shoulder suddenly, shocked, staring. It was mysterious! neither of us had touched it, not even a little bit. Undoubtedly, it hadn't stood steadily when the host placed it on the table. But it hadn't fallen then.

The crash of the thermos caused the host, with a box of sugar cubes in his hand, to rush back from the inner room. He looked at the steaming floor and said at once. “It doesn't matter! It doesn't matter!” I thought Dad would explain something about that. But I just heard his words, “Sorry I touched it and it fell.” I was puzzled and thought Dad was a little bit stupid.

“It doesn't matter,” the host said again.

Later, when we left the house, I said, “Daddy, did you touch it?”

“No. But it stood so close to me.”

“But you didn't touch it. I saw your reflection in the window. You were sitting perfectly still.” Father laughed. “Then how would you explain the cause of its fall?”

“The thermos fell by itself. The floor is uneven. It wasn't steady (平稳的)when he put it there. Daddy, why did you say that?”

“That won't do, girl. It sounds more acceptable when I say I knocked it down. Sometimes, the more you defend something, the less people can accept it.”

I was lost in silence for a while. Then I said, “You can explain it only this way?”

“Only this way.” my father said.

I didn't understand my dad's words at that time. But now I do---the host has been Dad's life-long friend. Maybe it was wise for Dad to take the responsibility in such a situation.

1We can know that the host ________.

A.didn't expect the author and her father to visit him

B.poured two cups of tea for them and left

C.was a person who easily got angry

D.went to the inner room to get some sugar for tea

2The thermos fell to the ground perhaps because ________.

A.the author's father knocked it down B.the table wasn't smooth at all

C.the host hadn't placed it on the table well D.the author touched it by accident

3The author was puzzled because she wondered ________.

A.how the host knew the fact in the inner room

B.why the host behaved so politely

C.why her father didn't tell the truth

D.how her father broke the thermos

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.The host was angry with them because of the accident

B.The author's father didn't think his friend would believe the truth

C.The author understood why her father said so from the beginning

D.The host didn't want to make them feel embarrassed though he knew the truth

5What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

A.It's no need to find out truth around us.

B.If we defend ourselves, people will believe us.

C.Children should be educated to tell lies.

D.Sometimes, to take the responsibility is another kind of wisdom.

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of wheat straw(稻草)? Most people would p【1】 see it as a pile of waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor(非遗传承人), can turn the straw into beautiful and eye catching functional artworks.

The earliest straw-weaving(编织) products were d【2】 at Hemudu Cultural Ruins, a Neolithic cultural site in Zhejiang Province. The Book of Rites also r【3】 that there were already mats(垫子) made of cattail grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen during the Zhou Dynasty.

Straw weaving is a m【4】 of making daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

Wu explains the process of straw weaving: choosing from materials is the first s【5】 of a complicated, time-consuming and labor-intensive process that can take weeks, or even months, to complete. You need to sketch(素描) the piece on paper, which r【6】 drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work. Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the h【7】 part is to make it lifelike.

In the past, woven straw items could be found almost in every household in the countryside, such as straw hats and straw shoes, because they were p【8】 in everyday life. But with the development of industry, manufactured goods have replaced such products, which make people gain little money, and there are only about 100 people joining in the work across the country.

Wu said, “Craftspeople should make a great effort to catch the chances of the times to create new and meaning products.” When asked about her plans, Wu says she wants to dig deeper into local traditional culture and create cultural creative products by developing the straw-weaving technique.
