But some people on the ground will be watching it. They will make sure your trip is safe. So you don't have to worry about it.

  • 26、

If you put a buzzard in a pen six to eight feet square and open at the top, the bird will be a prisoner, though it can fly. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as its habit, it will not even try to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in its small prison with no top.

The bat that flies around at night cannot take off from the ground. If it is placed on the ground, all it can do is to walk slowly about helplessly and no doubt, painfully. If it reaches a higher place, it will be able to throw itself  into the air. Then it takes off immediately. But on flat(平的) ground, it will never fly.

A bee dropped into a cup will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but keeps trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will look for a way where none exists(存在), until it completely destroys itself.

In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bee. They are struggling about with all their problems and difficulties, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

1Which of the following is a “pen” according to Paragraph 1?

    A. B. C. D.

2Why can’t a buzzard fly through the top of a pen?

A.It is too big and heavy to fly up. B.The space is too small for it to start flying.

C.It is too hungry and weak to get out. D.The space is comfortable for it to live in.

3What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the bat?

A.It prefers walking to flying. B.It can take off at once on flat ground.

C.It flies only when it is dark. D.It takes off only from a higher place.

4What can a bee do if it drops into a cup?

A.It will escape from the top. B.It will stay at the bottom without moving.

C.It will lose the ability to fly. D.it will die of tiredness at last.

5What can we learn from the story?

A.Many people like the buzzard, the bat and the bee.

B.Animals will also give up when in trouble.

C.We should try new ways to deal with difficulties.

D.We should solve problems by ourselves.

To: Aggie@ yahoo. com From: Joe@heinfo.Net

    Subject: Help!   Date: 21/ 10/ 2006 10:02 a. m.

    Dear Aunt Aggie,

I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an e-mail to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded(无意间转发)the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I never would have said those things to Rena’s face, but how can I get her to forgive(谅解)me? What should I do?

    Joe

To: Joe@ heinfo. net From: Aggie@ yahoo. com

    Subject: Some advice  Date: 22/ 10/ 2006 10:45 a. m.

    Dear Joe,

This problem is more common than you might think! E-mail is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. And good luck!

    Aggie

【1】What is Joe’s problem in the first e-mail?

    C. Joe received a wrong e-mail from Rena and became angry.

    D. Joe’s friend, Beth, is unhappy because Joe sent her an angry e-mail.

【2】After Rena’s feelings got hurt, what did Joe do?

    A. He emailed her and said sorry.

    B. He asked Beth what he should do.

    C. He emailed Aunt Aggie for help.

    D. He said sorry to Rena face to face.

【3】What does the underline sentence mean in the second e-mail?

    It means “______.”

    A. because you don’t know who the e-mail is for

    B. because you can never know who will get your e-mail at last

    C. because you don’t know where your e-mail was written

    D. because you never know where the message is from

【4】What advice did Aggie give Joe?

    A. Joe, Beth and Rena should have a talk together.

    B. Joe should wait for some time before saying sorry to Rena.

    C. Joe should ask Beth to explain that to Rena.

    D. Joe should say sorry to Rena, and then send her some flowers.

    【5】From the e-mails, we know that ______.

    A. Joe, Rena and Beth study at different schools

    B. Beth didn’t forward the message to Rena

    C. Joe has said sorry to Rena many times already

    D. Rena hasn’t forgiven Joe yet

Two seconds were left on the clock, we were down by one point, and I was at the free throw line. If I made the first shot, I would take a second shot. If we lost, we were out. It was the playoffs (决赛).

I started playing basketball for fun in the sixth grade. From the beginning, I had to play hard. I am not a _______ player, but I liked basketball. I could not run as fast or jump as high or dribble (运球) the ball as well as my naturally athletic teammates, but that never bothered me. We all have our gifts, but through hard work, I could do anything I wanted to do.

But on that day, on that shot, I _______. I immediately jumped up for the rebound. Someone from the other team got it though, and the game was over. The season was over. We were out.

He found me and pointed to me.

_______,” he said and encouraged me. And everyone in the room started to clap hands for me.
