26、It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about my not very bright future because I don't plan to be a doctor, and much to her disappointment, I don't want to do any job related to science, either. In fact when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s(同事) son?” she bemoans all the time. Her co-worker's son received a four-year scholarship(奖学金) and is now making 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don't know what to answer except that I just can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker's son. I can't be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of honor or money.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her little money and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am. And usually comes home around 5 pm. or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that if I become a doctor, it doesn't mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

27、There are few clear rules in the UK saying drivers should not park on the pavement(人行道). But Scotland, a country of Britain, is planning a complete ban on pavement parking. And, earlier this year, the UK government admitted it was considering changing the law for the other parts of Britain.
Joe Irvin of Living Streets (the UK charity for everyday walking) says there is “no excuse”for the disagreement and has called on the UK government to act the same way.
“Pavement parking is really thoughtless—and if you think about people with wheelchairs, pushchairs, or sight impairment (受损), they have to go out on to the road,” says Mr Irvin.
Steve Hynd, from Bristol, said his father, who uses a wheelchair, had recently ended up in hospital after a parked car had blocked his path.
“My dad’s experience was near his care home,” he says. “He was trying to wheel himself back inside and a car had parked up on the pavement. He tried to get around it and fell out of his wheelchair. He went to hospital. He’d hurt his head and got a black eye where his glasses had gone in.”
Groups such as the AA and RAC admit “some streets”should not allow pavement parking if it causes problems to emergency vehicles(紧急车辆) but they do not believe in a complete ban across the country.
AA president Edmund King says, “We would be worried if there was a total ban. It is clearly possible in i some areas to park on the pavement while still allowing room for pushchairs or people In wheelchairs to pass do not believe in a complete ban across the country.”
AA president Edmund King says, “We would be concerned if there was a total ban. It is clearly possible in some areas to park on the pavement while still allowing room for pushchairs or people In wheelchairs to pass.”
Hugh Bladon of the Alliance of British Drivers argues a complete ban would cause serious problems as some streets were so narrow.
The simple way to deal with the problems, Mr. Bladon believes, is that all drivers must leave at least one metre between their car and the inside of the pavement to allow people with pushchairs and so on to pass by.

What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I am never doing this again!” That first 10-kilometre race was quite 【5】 experience. I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know 【6】 I could finish.
Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed that I was more than 50 years 【7】 (young) than him and that I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare 【8】 (we) to others when we really shouldn’t? I decided that I would not give up on running races, and that one day I would be one of those 70-year-old 【9】 (man) who were still running.
