  • 25、   What kind of transportation will you choose when traveling between provinces? Many people may like taking the train because it’s safer and cheaper. Now the high-speed railways have connected eastern and western China as well as the south and the north.

The first inter-city high-speed railway in Ningxia will open in 2018. It connects Wuzhong with Zhongwei. There are three stations along the whole way. China’s high-speed railways are developing fast now. Behind it, there is the country’s growing need for transportation. According to Xinhua News, China’s high-speed trains gave 961 million trip to people last year.

“The high-speed railways not only bridge the distance, but connect people, information and goods,” said Huang Xin, an officer from the China Railway Corp.

2Which country is the first one to build the high-speed railway.

3Why may many people like traveling between provinces by train.

A.Because it’s clean and comfortable. B.Because it’s fast and safe.

C.Because it’s not expensive and safe. D.Because it’s popular and cheap.

4According to the passage, we can infer(推理) that ________.

A.there will be more high-speed railways in the future in China.

B.China has 38,000 kilometers of high-speed railways now

C.China’s high-speed trains will gave 961 million trip to people next year.

An English documentary (纪录片) Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, introduces the great poet (诗人) to the West. As the first English-language documentary about Du Fu, it compares him to Shakespeare to help Westerners better understand the poet’s great achievements in literature (文学).

The film starts with Du Fu, and the core spirit of Chinese culture runs through it. 【4】 Du Fu becomes a cultural symbol of the ancient country through this documentary. His excellent works are also an important cultural heritage (遗产) for the whole world, not just China.

  • 27、The first thing that disturbed us was that advertisement. Spaulding came into the office 8 weeks ago, with this paper in his hand, and he said: “I wish, Mr. Wilson, that I was a red-headed man.”

    “Why?” I said.

“Because,” he said, “there’s another vacancy1at the League of Red-Headed Men. It’s worth a fortune to2the man who gets it, and I understand that there are more vacancies than there are men.”

“Why? What is this ‘League?’ I asked. You see, Mr. Holmes, I am a very stay-at-home. My business comes to me and I am often weeks on end without putting my foot over the door-mat. So I don’t know what is going on outside, and I am always happy to hear some news.”

“Have you never heard of the League of Red-headed Men?” he asked with his eyes open.

    “Never.”

“Why? That is strange, for you are eligible3for one of the vacancies.”

“And what are they?” I asked.

“Oh, each vacancy pays a couple of hundred pounds a year. But there is little work to do.”

“Well, you can be sure that I was interested. My business was not very successful, and I liked the thought of an extra couple of hundred pounds.”

“Tell me all about it.” I said.

“Well,” he said, showing me the advertisement, “you can see yourself that the League has a vacancy. Here is the address where you can apply for details. The League was founded by an American millionaire, Ezekiah Hopkins, who was very strange in his ways. He was red-headed, and he had a great sympathy for4 all red-headed men. So, when he died, he left his money to a group of trustees, with instructions to give the money to men with red hair. It is good pay and there is very little to do.”

“But,” I said, “there are millions of red-headed men who can apply.”

“Not as many as you think,” he answered. “You see it only for Londoners, and grown men. This American came from London, and he wanted to do something good for the old town. And, I have heard, you can’t apply if your hair is light red, or dark red, or anything but real bright, blazing fiery red. Your hair is perfect, Mr. Wilson, if you want to apply. But perhaps it’s not worth your while applying for just a couple of hundred pounds. ”

    Taken from the Red-Headed League

【1】According to this passage, why does Ezekiah Hopkins start the Red-Headed League?

A.Because he had little work to do every day.

B.Because he had too much money and didn’t know what to do with it.

C.Because the harder he worked, the greater progress he made.

D.Because he had great sympathy for all red-headed men.

【2】You don’t need ________ before you join the league ?

    A.to be an adult

    B.to be from London

    C.to have enough money

    D.to have bright red hair

【3】What does the word “founded” in the paragraph mean?

    A.looked

    B.set up

    C.looked after

    D.taken up

【4】Which of the following sentences is right ?

A.A millionaire for the UK founded the Red-Headed League.

B.The vacancy pays hundreds of pounds but there’s a little work to do.

C.Spaulding knew what happened outside though he stayed at home all day long.

D.Ezekiah Hopkins left his money to anyone who could join the league.

【5】The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A.anyone who apply for the vacancy can get several hundred pounds

B.someone with red hair can apply for the vacancy

C.who can become a member of the Red-Headed League

D.what the people (who apply for the vacancy) should do before applying
