A boy of 11 spent 93 days walking 1,700 miles from Sicily, Italy to London, the UK with his father so he could give his grandmother a special hug (拥抱). Schoolboy Romeo Cox set off from Palermo June 20 with his father Phil, 46, on a journey through Italy, Switzerland and France. The pair fought off wild dogs in Rome and even tamed (驯服) a wild donkey as they made their way back to the UK where they are now self-isolating (隔离) in Hackney.

The hard journey included boat journeys, cycling and a donkey ride but Romeo said it was easy to walk thousands of miles when heading home. The father and son’s journey involved (包含) them sleeping in churches, hostels and camping under the stars while        some people offered them their homes. Romeo finally reached Trafalgar Square on September 21, 2020, but he’ll have to wait a little longer before he can hug his beloved grandmother Rosemary, 77.

The boy, whose father is English and mother Giovanna Stopponi is Italian, is isolating before he can get together with his grandmother who lives in Witney, Oxon. Romeo said, “We got lost a few times. We slept under a wasp(黄蜂) nest, which wasn’t a good idea, got bloody feet, but we never thought about giving up.”

Romeo, who moved from Hackney, East London, to Palermo last year, has raised a great sum of money for the charity Refugee Education Across Conflicts Trust (REACT). Speaking of the journey, Romeo added, “As we got closer, I just kept thinking about seeing my Granny, and how excited I was.”

  • 25、In China, children like to make promises by hooking pinkies (勾手指) with each other and saying, “A pinkie promise must be kept for 100 years.” Then, they may press their thumbs (拇指) together to complete the promise. Sometimes, couples will hook pinkies and promise to be together forever.

There are many theories (推测) on the beginning of the pinkie promise. Some say it comes from a song for kids. Others say it was introduced from the West out of a love story where a man and a woman hooked fingers.

One theory is that it may have something to do with the role of fingers in Chinese culture. The Chinese character (汉字) for “finger” also meant “aim” in the past. So hooking fingers can be seen as the exchanging of thoughts.

Therefore, the fingers play an important role in making an oath (盟约): they can not only be used to complete a promise, but also be cut for making a blood oath. When someone swears (发誓) to god, they use their fingers to point to the sky.

Generally, hooking fingers means making a serious promise. In some gangster (黑帮) movies, a person who breaks a promise may have his little finger cut off! , but we can still see how important “pinkie promises” can be. So next time you make a “pinkie promise”, you’d better take it seriously!

【1】Children in China may finish “hooking pinkies” by ________.

  • 27、At the beginning of 2021, the Chinese government said it will provide free COVID-19 vaccines(疫苗) to all Chinese citizens. Since then, millions of people have gotten the vaccine. Let’s take a closer look.

The vaccine is given by injection (注射). It’s suggested to get two doses. You should wait about two weeks after the first dose to get the second one.

Can people of all ages get vaccinated?

The vaccines have been tested among three different age groups: 3 to 17, 18 to 59, and 60 and above. The 18-to-59 age group has the most data (数据) the vaccines have been proven to be safe in this group. The other two groups are expected to be included soon.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t get vaccinated?

Experts say the vaccines are safe for most people. But people who have serious diseases such as cancer or diabetes (糖尿病), or people who are allergic (过敏的) to any of the vaccine’s ingredients, should not get it. People who want to get the vaccine should not get any other vaccines during the same period.

Do I still need to wear a mask in public places after I’ve been vaccinated?

There is also a small chance that your body won’t build immunity. So before the population becomes immune to the virus, it’s highly encouraged to keep wearing masks, practicing social distancing (社交隔离) and washing your hands after getting vaccinated.
