She was singing songs about love. The way she was singing made me a little comfortable. I stood there watching her playing on such a crowded New York square. I thought that she must be brave enough to perform in front of so many people.

She noticed me. I walked over and told her how good her music sounded. “Thank you.” she said.

“I have been going through a hard time recently, but you’ve made me hopeful again.” I said to her.

“Well, my mom has lost her job, and I’m not sure what to do …”

“Did you notice the way you were walking? Your head was down.” she said. “Don’t be upset, because opportunity (机遇) comes in different ways and if your head is down, you might not see it. You should smile more… lift your head up.”

  • 25、阅读短文,从下面每题的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项。

According to a 2018 study from San Francisco State University, nearly 2. 4 billon people around the world used a smartphone in 2017. By the end of 2018, more than a third of the global population will be using a smartphone.

However, smartphone technology can be a double-edged sword (双刃剑). On the one hand, it sends us lots of information. On the other hand, using a smartphone may become an addiction ().

Erik Peper and Richard Harvey are both health education professors at San Francisco State University. They led the study. Peper explains that smartphone addiction forms connections in the brain that are similar to drug addiction (毒瘾). And these connections form slowly over time. Also, addiction to social media may affect (影响) our emotional state (情绪). The two professors asked 135 university students about their habit of smartphone use and their feelings. They found that students who used their phones were feeling lonelier and more nervous.

Peper and Harvey don't blame (责怪) users for their technology addiction. The researchers warn that workers in the technology industry know how to control our brains and turn us into addicts.

But the researchers say that we can train our brains to be less addicted to our phones and computers. Erik Peper suggests turning off our phones before we sleep or do something important. The researchers also suggest taking control of when and where you answer texts or emails. You don't need to answer them all. And you certainly don't need to answer them as soon as you get them. They also suggest setting limits (设限) on the time you spend.

1What can we infer from Paragraph ?

A.Smartphone use has become very common.

B.Most young people can't live without smartphones.

C.Smartphones make our life more colorful and convenient.

D.Most people think smartphones are the greatest invention.

2The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means smartphone technology ________.

A.has a bright future B.can be better than most people think

C.has both advantages and disadvantages D.can give us lots of information

3What did Erik Peper and Richard Harvey find about smartphone use?

A.It can beat loneliness. B.It's more popular with students.

C.It's preferred by young people feeling lonely. D.It can harm students' emotional state in many ways.

4What does the last paragraph mainly want to tell us?

A.Social media isn't that important to us. B.We can train our brains to do many things.

C.We shouldn't become addicted to our smartphones. D.There are ways to deal with smartphone use addiction.

  • 27、TV was one of the greatest inventions in the 20th century.  Nowadays, nearly every household has at least one TV set.

Television came into being based on the inventions and discoveries of many scientists. On April 7,1927,the first public television programme was broadcast in the USA. The signals were received on a very small screen. It was only about the size of a business card. The pictures were reddish and not clear.

In the 1930s, bigger screens appeared with black-and-white pictures. However,a snowy picture was the best many TV viewers could hope for. Often,  they could only get one station, and only when the weather conditions were good.

When World War (1939-1945)began,the development of TV stopped.  There were a very small number of TV sets in the hands of the public. By 1945,there were fewer than 7,000 working TV sets in the USA. A TV set cost about half the price of a car at that time.

The period after World War is considered the final birth of television.  Families saved money during the war years, and wanted to buy a lot of things after the war.  TV sets were soon put onto the "must have" list. 1950-1959 was an exciting period for television. Colour televisions and remote controls came out during this time. By 1955,the cost of TV sets came down a lot. Instead of being equal to half the price of a car, they were now just equal to the cost of a new set of tires. That marks the beginning of the booming age of TV.

    A. people liked TVs less than before

    B. nobody wanted a TV in their home

    C. every family wanted to buy a TV

    B. During World War,TV sets went into lots of families.

    C. After World War II,TV was invented.

    D. TV developed fast in the 1950s.

4What's the main idea of the passage?

    D. The price of television.

5What does the word "booming" mean?

六、完型填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 29、   You have waited 45 minutes for the valuable 10 minutes’ break between classes. But when the bell for the next class rings, you can’t __________ how quickly time has passed.

If you are familiar with this scene, you’ll know how time flies when you are having fun and drags when you are bored. Now scientists have come up with a reason why this is the case.

Scans have shown that patterns of activity in the brain change according to how we focus on a task. When we are bored, we concentrate more on how time is passing. And this makes our brains _________ the clock is ticking more slowly.

In an experiment _________ by a French laboratory, 12 volunteers watched an image while researchers monitored their brain activity.

The volunteers were told to _________ concentrate on how long an image appeared for, then _________ the color of the image, and thirdly, study both duration and color. The results showed that the brain was more active when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects.

It is thought that if the brain is busy focusing on many aspects of a task, it has to spread its resources, and pays less attention to the clock. _________, time passes without us really noticing  it, and seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it concentrates its full energies on monitoring the passing of time. As a result, time seems to drag.

Next time you feel bored in class, perhaps you should pay more attention to what the teacher is saying!
