It’s the best way to review what you have learned in class. And it helps you understand important concepts (概念) . Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less difficult.

☆Be sure you understand the homework.

Robots are supposed to run on batteries, right? Well not all of them.

Scientists in England have built a kind of small robots that get their energy from dead flies, bad apples, or sugar.

One robot, called Slugbot, was even designed to hunt(猎取) garden slugs for dinner!

What's up with all that food?

Well, scientists at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory want to invent robots that can operate for a long time in dark, dirty, or dangerous places.

Many of those spots, like the seafloor or Antarctica, don't have electrical sockets(插座).

So inventor Chris Melhuish came up with a better idea: Build robots that get their energy just like animals do by hunting and eating food from their environment.

One robot, called Ecobot , could run for 12 days on a diet of eight flies! Of course, it'd still get a lot more power from one AA battery, though.

Melhuish says his team is now working on a new and improved robot, called Ecobot III, which will have a better digestion system.

It seems that after an eight fly dinner, Ecobot II couldn't deal with the leftover(剩下的) "waste".

Maybe restrooms in the future will have signs for boys, girls, and robots.

    1An ordinary robot usually .

    A.gets its energy from sugar

A.is a kind of insect B.is a kind of fish

C.can't see Slugbot D.can eat Slugbot

3What kind of robots do inventor Chris Melhuish want?

A.Robots that can provide people with food.

B.Robots that can work in dangerous places.

C.Robots that can get energy for themselves.

D.Robots that can be very small.

4Which of the following is NOT true according to this passage?

A.Robots need to work in places that have no sockets for power.

B.Melhuish is not very satisfied with Ecobot .

C.Maybe there will be three kinds of restrooms in the future.

D.Ecobot can turn its flies into energy completely.

5What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Robots are hard things to invent.

B.Scientists are working to improve robots.

C.Robots in the future need to eat food like human.

D.Scientists at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory are good at robots.

The balalaika, also called the “Russian guitar”, is a traditional Russian musical instrument. It has a long neck, a wooden triangle-shaped body and strings. It is usually used to play Russian music by plucking (弹拨) the strings with fingers or a pick.

Russians like the balalaika. The music played with it can be cheerful, as if the farmers were dancing happily to celebrate their harvest. It can also be energetic, as if the workers were working hard to make their country richer and stronger. If a Russian moves to live or work abroad, he will probably take a balalaika with him. When he feels lonely and sad, he will play it to cheer himself up.

The balalaika was originally played by the poor in Russia. At that time, balalaikas were made by the players themselves. They were rough, simple and cheap with different numbers of strings, from two to even six. Later a Russian musician Vasily Vasilievich Andreyev (1861-1918) improved the balalaika. He created a whole family of balalaikas of different sizes, all with three strings. The smallest balalaika is called Prima. It is 60-70 cm long. The biggest, Contrabass, is almost 2 meters high with a leg to sit on the floor. Andreyev founded the first balalaika orchestra (管弦乐队) in the world, mainly using balalaikas to perform. He gave concerts at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889, which was a great success.

In their own ways, they are showing others that they won’t let the virus get them down. Take a look at some of the interesting things they’re doing with their spare time.

    Encourage people to dance

Matthew Lee is a 16-year-old Chinese-American. Although he is now living in Los Angeles, US, the news about the outbreak in China still hit close to home (使感同身受) for him. When he learned that most Chinese are unable to leave their houses, he decided to encourage them by making a dance video with his friends. “My friend Jojo was excited about the chance to cheer people up and she said she would dance her heart out for a great purpose — the health and wellness of those quarantined (隔离) in China,” Lee told TEENS. In the cooldown part of the dance, Lee chose to dance to the song We Are The World. Lee said, “I believe that with sweat and smiles, together, we will make a better day.”

    Write a rap song

“I close my eyes and pray (祈祷) / hoping everything will be okay / the one who can save you is not God / but an ordinary man in flesh (肉身) and blood.”

These are a few lines from a rap song written by Liu Yixin and Li Yusheng, who are Senior 3 students from The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (中国人民大学附属中学) in Beijing. Titled An Empty City (《空城》), the song became popular as soon as it came out because of its thought-provoking (引人深思的) lyrics and deep emotion (感情). Liu said in an interview that he has read a lot of news stories lately, both good and bad, which led him to write a song that expresses his own opinion about the present situation.

“I love making music and used to have my own band. Music is the best way for me to express myself. After the college entrance exam this year, I’ll continue to make more,” Liu told China Youth Daily.

    Write an English poem

Du Yiran is a Junior 2 student from Baoding, Hebei. While stuck at home during the outbreak, Du and her classmates wrote several acrostic poems (藏头诗) in English to help cheer people up. “My teacher suggested this form. I found it quite interesting because you can hide a message in the first letters of each line and surprise your readers as they read downwards,” Du said. “As teenagers, we can’t go to the front line to save people’s lives, but we should learn to care about others and do something meaningful during this time.”

【1】How did Matthew Lee and Jojo encourage people to work out?

A.They made a dance video with their friends.

B.They were streaming live every day.

C.They learned to dance from online videos.

D.They sang the song We Are The World.

【2】Why is the song An Empty City so popular?

A.Because it was written by two students.

B.Because it is about the current situation in Wuhan.

C.Because it is the best way to express one’s opinions.

D.Because it touches people’s hearts and makes them think.

【3】Du Yiran finds it interesting to write acrostic poems because ________.

A.she is stuck at home with little entertainment

B.she can surprise readers with a hidden message

C.she has never written any acrostic poems before

D.she has learned to care about others through writing

【4】Which of the following information is RIGHT?

A.Lee chose to write a poem in the cooldown part of the dance.

B.Liu Yixin and Li Yusheng are both university students.

C.DuYiran thinks students can do something meaningful though they can’t go to the frontline.

D.Doing creative things is just to kill time.

    【5】What is the story about?

    A.Creative indoor activities.

    B.Talented students around the world.

C.Best ways to kill time at home.

    D.Useful tips for staying positive.

In 1997, Lottie Williams was walking through a park in Oklahoma, in the US, with her friends. Suddenly something tapped her on the shoulder and fell to the ground. She picked the object up. It was about as heavy as an empty soda can. L1 scientists told her it was a piece of a Delta H rocket that had been used to launch a satellite.

Many countries around the world have sent satellites into space. We need satellites to send receive TV and radio signals, to r2 the weather and for many other things. But when they become old or they break down or we don’t need them anymore, we just leave them there. They become space junk.

Scientists think there are about 16,000 objects larger than 10 centimeters wide flying around the Earth, and tens of millions of smaller objects too. They travel at around 7 kilometers a second. That’s fast! And it’s their speed that makes these pieces of space junk really d3. If one small piece of space junk hits something at high speed, it can do a lot of damage. Luckily, there haven’t been many collisions(). But in 2009, an old Russian satellite hit and destroyed an American satellite---and that c4 2,000 new pieces of space Junk!

Pieces of space junk re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day. But Lottie Williams is the o5  person who has been hit. The piece that hit her was light, and the air in the atmosphere had slowed it down. Most space junk burns up and doesn’t reach the Earth’s s6 . But in 2011, a metal ball 35 centimeters wide fell to Earth in Namibia, Africa. It made a hole in the ground 30 centimeters d7  and over 3 meters wide. Lottie was lucky she wasn’t hit by that!
