四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、When something goes wrong, it can be very pleasing to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s mistake.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my mistake; the bus was late.” It is probably not your mistake, but once you form the habit of blaming(责怪) somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you start paying attention to how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.

Winners are great at solving problems. For example, if you were late because the bus was late, maybe you need to leave home early. Or, you might call a taxi or call friends for help when in need. For another example, if your workmate causes you problems on the job for short of responsibility(责任心) or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability. Ask to work with a different person, or leave this person with some simple jobs. You should accept that the person is not reliable(可靠的).

This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and wisdom so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and chances to develop their own ability. So, stop paying attention to “whose mistake it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

【1】According to the passage, winners .

    A. have responsible and able workmates

    B. meet with fewer difficulties in their lives

    C. blame themselves rather than others

    D. deal with problems rather than blame others

2When your workmate brings about a problem, you should .

    A. blame him for his short of responsibility

    B. find a better way to overcome the problem

    C. tell him to find the cause of the problem

    D. ask a more able workmate for help

3When problems happen, winners take them as .

    A. excuses for their mistakes

    B. difficulties to greater power

    C. chances for self-development

    D. challenges to their workmates

4Which of the following is the best title for the passage

    A. A Winner’s Secret    B. A Winner’s Problem

    C. A Winner’s Chance D. A Winner’s Achievement

  • 25、   “Where’s Papa going with the ax(斧子)?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

“Out to the pig house,” replied Mrs. Arable. “Some pigs were born last night.”

“I don’t see why he needs an ax,” continued Fern, who was only eight.

“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is a runt. It’s very small and weak, and it will never grow up to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it.”

“Do away with it?” screamed Fern. “You mean kill it? Just because it’s smaller than the others?” Mrs. Arable put some cream on the table. “Don’t cry, Fern!” she said. “Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway.”

Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. The grass was wet and the earth smelled of springtime. Fern's sneakers(运动鞋)were all wet by the time she caught up with her father.

“Please don't kill it!” she cried. “It’s unfair.” Mr. Arable stopped walking.

“Fern,” he said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.”

“Control myself?”cried Fern. “This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself.” Tears ran down her face and she took hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.

“Fern,” said Mr. Arable, “I know more about raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble. Now run along!”

“But it’s unfair(不公平),” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”

Mr. Arable smiled. “Of course not,” he said, looking down at his daughter with love. “But this is different. A little girl is one thing, a little runty pig is another.”

“I see no difference,” replied Fern, still hanging on to the ax. “This is the most terrible case of injustice(不公正) I ever heard of.”

A queer look came over John Arable’s face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.

“All right,” he said. You go back to the house and I will bring the runt when I come in. I’ll let you start it on a bottle, like a baby. Then you’ll see what trouble a pig can be.”

1We can infer from the text that Mr Arable ______________.

A.does not like raising little pigs B.has had little experience raising pigs

C.makes a living by doing with little pigs D.has probably raised many pigs in his lifetime

2Mr Arable seemed almost ready to cry because he ______________.

A.is angry about what his daughter has done

B.does not like to lose an argument with his daughter

C.gets worried about how difficult it would be to raise the pig

D.is touched by his daughter’s willingness to stand up for the little pig

3We can tell that Mr Arable agrees to let the little pig go because ______________.

A.he finally agrees with his daughter

B.he believes that the pig will die soon

C.he believes that raising a pig will teach Fern some lessons

D.he realizes that taking care of a little pig is not that difficult

  • 26、As I said to you last time, love is good. But it shouldn’t turn into infatuation (痴情). In other words, we shouldn’t put love above everything else.

    You know what’s funny?

When I entered the artillery (火炮) school, you were worried that I might go to war and die for nothing.

But you also said that you wanted to be a teacher after graduation, so that you could educate young men to be patriotic and even give their lives for the country when it’s in great danger.

It’s such a joke that you were OK with someone else dying for their country but not your own lover. Your students will also have lovers. They also have parents and brothers. They are also Chinese people. Why should they have to die in the war?

If their loved ones all desperately tried to keep them from going to war, there would be no hope for China. You were right when you said that I shouldn’t die for nothing.

But if I were to die for the revolution (革命) and the people, would it really be “for nothing”?

If that were the case, China would have no martyrs and the revolution will never succeed.

【1】The letter is probably written by a ________.

    A.teacher

    B.farmer

    C.doctor

    D.soldier

【2】The underlined words be patriotic means ________.

    A.trying to improve oneself

    B.being kind to others

    C.caring about one’s family

    D.expressing love for one’s country

【3】We can infer from the letter that the writer ________.

A.worked as a teacher before the war

    B.has no parents or brothers

C.is proud to fight or even die for the country

D.has a lover who worried about him a lot

【4】The writer wrote the letter mainly to ________.

A.show his strong love for his lover

B.share his life in the war with his lover

    C.ask for his lover’s understanding

D.encourage his lover to join in the war

  • 27、The first thing that disturbed us was that advertisement. Spaulding came into the office 8 weeks ago, with this paper in his hand, and he said: “I wish, Mr. Wilson, that I was a red-headed man.”

    “Why?” I said.

“Because,” he said, “there’s another vacancy1at the League of Red-Headed Men. It’s worth a fortune to2the man who gets it, and I understand that there are more vacancies than there are men.”

“Why? What is this ‘League?’ I asked. You see, Mr. Holmes, I am a very stay-at-home. My business comes to me and I am often weeks on end without putting my foot over the door-mat. So I don’t know what is going on outside, and I am always happy to hear some news.”

“Have you never heard of the League of Red-headed Men?” he asked with his eyes open.

    “Never.”

“Why? That is strange, for you are eligible3for one of the vacancies.”

“And what are they?” I asked.

“Oh, each vacancy pays a couple of hundred pounds a year. But there is little work to do.”

“Well, you can be sure that I was interested. My business was not very successful, and I liked the thought of an extra couple of hundred pounds.”

“Tell me all about it.” I said.

“Well,” he said, showing me the advertisement, “you can see yourself that the League has a vacancy. Here is the address where you can apply for details. The League was founded by an American millionaire, Ezekiah Hopkins, who was very strange in his ways. He was red-headed, and he had a great sympathy for4 all red-headed men. So, when he died, he left his money to a group of trustees, with instructions to give the money to men with red hair. It is good pay and there is very little to do.”

“But,” I said, “there are millions of red-headed men who can apply.”

“Not as many as you think,” he answered. “You see it only for Londoners, and grown men. This American came from London, and he wanted to do something good for the old town. And, I have heard, you can’t apply if your hair is light red, or dark red, or anything but real bright, blazing fiery red. Your hair is perfect, Mr. Wilson, if you want to apply. But perhaps it’s not worth your while applying for just a couple of hundred pounds. ”

    Taken from the Red-Headed League

【1】According to this passage, why does Ezekiah Hopkins start the Red-Headed League?

A.Because he had little work to do every day.

B.Because he had too much money and didn’t know what to do with it.

C.Because the harder he worked, the greater progress he made.

D.Because he had great sympathy for all red-headed men.

【2】You don’t need ________ before you join the league ?

    A.to be an adult

    B.to be from London

    C.to have enough money

    D.to have bright red hair

【3】What does the word “founded” in the paragraph mean?

    A.looked

    B.set up

    C.looked after

    D.taken up

【4】Which of the following sentences is right ?

A.A millionaire for the UK founded the Red-Headed League.

B.The vacancy pays hundreds of pounds but there’s a little work to do.

C.Spaulding knew what happened outside though he stayed at home all day long.

D.Ezekiah Hopkins left his money to anyone who could join the league.

【5】The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A.anyone who apply for the vacancy can get several hundred pounds

B.someone with red hair can apply for the vacancy

C.who can become a member of the Red-Headed League

D.what the people (who apply for the vacancy) should do before applying
