Even kids know that we should wait for the traffic light to turn green before crossing a road, but not everybody follows this basic rule.

“Chinese style road crossing” has become a hot expression recently. Chinese people “cross roads without thinking about traffic lights, so long as they are part of a crowd”, said a post on Sina Weibo.

A CCTV news program showed that in only an hour, more than 600 people jumped red lights when crossing a road at a crossing in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.

Many people say that they jaywalk(乱闯马路)because the red light lasts too long. Such an opinion is supported by a research team at Tongji University. The team did research on people’s waiting times at different road crossings from 2008 to 2010. They found that Chinese people would wait for 70 to 90 seconds before they lost their patience. “People are likely to ignore the light when the waiting time is longer than they can stand,” said Ni Ying, a member of the research team.

However, a survey on Sina Weibo suggested that half of the respondents(调查对象) believe that people jaywalk mainly because they disregard rules. “I always obey traffic rules. Time is important but safety should come first.” Wrote “Qixiaoe” on Weibo.

Many countries give out punishments to jaywalkers. In Singapore, the maximum(最大量) can be three months in prison. Some Chinese cities have started taking some actions, too. For example, the first three people in a jaywalking group will be fined 50 yuan in Shijiazhuang.

But calling on people to respect rules is more important. To completely solve the problem, everyone should realize the importance of obeying the traffic rules.

1Which of the following is the “Chinese style road crossing”?

    A. To wait for the traffic light to turn green.

    B. To cross a road slowly.

    C. To cross roads without looking at traffic lights.

    D. To follow the basic traffic lights.

2What’s the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “ignore”?

    A. 忽视   B. 轻视   C. 动摇   D. 恪守

3How long will Chinese people wait to cross the road before they lose patience?

    A. Less than one minute.

    B. Less than one and a half minutes.

    C. About five minutes.

    D. More than ten minutes.

4Why do people jaywalk according to the survey on Sina Weibo?

    A. Because there are too many people on the road.

    B. Because the red light lasts too long.

    C. Because people don’t pay much attention to rules.

    D. Because people have less patience.

5The writer suggests that we should   to solve the problem of jaywalking.

    A. punish the jaywalkers

    B. disregard the traffic rules

    C. reduce the time of red lights

    D. call on people to obey the traffic lights.

Baggy has become the first dog in the UK-and might be the world-to join the fight against air pollution by recording the pollution levels (水平) near the ground.

Baggy wears a pollution monitor (监视器) around her neck. It is different from the normal pollution monitors fixed on lampposts (路灯柱) at about 3 meters high, so she can record pollution levels close to the ground.

This idea comes from Baggy’s 13-year-old owner Tom Hunt and his dad Matt. Since Baggy stands at about the same height as a child in a pushchair (婴儿车), her monitor shows a different result. The pollution levels are much higher than those recorded by the Environment Agency at higher places in the air. Tom has reported the shocking findings to the government in order to warn that babies are at higher risk of having asthma (哮喘).

Matt Hunt said he was very proud of his son because when the boy gets an idea, he keeps his head down and gets on with it until he finally makes it. And he really wants to do some good and stop young kids from getting asthma.

“Tom were interested in environmental protection at a very early age as well as gadgets (小装置) making.” Matt added.“About one year ago, he got this new place of technology. One Sunday afternoon, we went out to do some monitoring, and he said, ‘why don’t we put it around Baggy’s neck and let her monitor the pollution?’ So we did it.”

Tom said “Most of the time, Baggy is just like any other dog. But for the rest of the time, she is a super dog, and we all really take pride in her.”

【1】With a monitor around her neck, Baggy can ________.

    A.lower air pollution

    B.record pollution levels

    C.process pollution information

【2】What can we learn from the Baggy’s recording?

A.High places hardly have air pollution.

B.The air near the ground is more polluted.

C.The normal monitors are more dependable.

【3】The underlined phrase gets on with in Paragraph 4 means ________.

    A.continues working on

    B.comes up with

    C.is good with

【4】Which of the following can best describe Tom Hunt?

    A.Smart and outgoing

    B.Helpful and creative

    C.Talented and brave

【5】What can be the best title of the text?

    A.Air pollution worries many parents.

B.A boy and his dog make a difference.

C.High-tech products spread in the UK.

  • 27、   It seems that we have it backward in our society. We tend to look up to people who are under a great deal of stress, who can deal with lots of stress, and those who are under a great deal of pressure. When someone says, “I've been working really hard," or "I'm really stressed out," we are taught to admire, even copy what they do. In my work as a stress consultant (顾问)I hear the proud words "I have a very high tolerance (忍耐力; 忍受力)to stress" almost every day. It probably won't come as a surprise that when these stressed-out people first arrive at my office, more often than not, what they are hoping for are methods to raise their tolerance to stress even higher so they can deal with even more!

Luckily, there is a powerful law in our emotional environment that goes something like this: our present level of stress will be exactly that of our tolerance to stress. You'll notice that the people who say, “I can deal with lots of stress" will always be under a great deal of it! So, if you teach people to raise their tolerance to stress, that's exactly what will happen. They will accept even more responsibility  until again, their level of stress matches that of their tolerance. Usually it takes a serious problem of some kind to wake up a stressed-out person to their own craziness一a great loss, a complete failure, or an unexpected illness一something  happens that forces them to search for a new kind of method.

It may seem strange, but if you were to join in the stress management workshop, what you would probably learn is to raise your tolerance to stress. It seems that even stress consultants are stressed out!

What you want to start doing is noticing your stress early before it gets out of hand. When your schedule (日程安排)is getting out of hand, it's a sign that it's time to slow down and reconsider what's important rather than power through everything on the list. When you're feeling out of control and tired of all you have to do, rather than roll up your sleeves and "get to it,” a better method is to relax, take a few deep breaths, and go for a short walk. You'll find that when you catch yourself getting too stressed outearly, before it gets out of controlyour stress will be like the "snowball" rolling down the hill. When it's small, it's manageable and easy to control. Once it gathers more, however, it's difficult, if not impossible, to stop.

There's no need to worry that you won't get it all done. When your mind is clear and peaceful and your stress level comes down, you'll be more effective and you'll have more fun. As you lower your tolerance to stress, you will find that you'll have far less stress to deal with, as well as creative ideas for dealing with the stress that is left over.

1People hoping to raise their tolerance will probably_________.

A.shoulder fewer responsibilities B.have to deal with more stress

C.refuse to listen to the consultant D.manage to solve problems well

2The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably means _________.

A.the level of stress differs from their tolerance

B.the level of stress changes with their tolerance

C.the level of stress goes beyond their tolerance

D.the level of stress falls below their tolerance

3What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.We should follow our schedule and power through everything on the list.

B.Rolling the snowball down the hill can help us relax and feel less stressed.

C.It's wise to notice the early sign of stress and manage it as soon as possible.

D.Going for a walk is a better choice when you are tired of what you're doing.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Lower Your Tolerance to Stress B.Turn to Your Consultant for Help

C.Better Your Emotional Environment D.Get Close to Nature to Lower Stress
