Crystal was a reporter for her school’s newspaper, The Real Story. She’d done several different kinds of stories before, but never anything like the story she was about to do. During an interview, the school nurse, Mrs. Jones, had told Crystal that the school had a secret basement. Crystal was eager to find out what was in the basement. It could be just about anything! So Crystal asked the newspaper’s advisor, Mr. Adair, if she could do a feature on the school’s basement. He agreed with her that basement might be a fascinating story, especially since a lot of people weren’t even aware that it existed.
Crystal got permission from the headmaster to go down into the basement as long as some teachers went with her. So Mr. Adair and Mrs. Jones accompanied Crystal when she went to explore the basement. The guard unlocked the basement door, and Crystal and the two teachers slowly descended the narrow staircase. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, Mrs. Jones turned on the light, and she, Mr. Adair, and Crystal began to look around.
Crystal soon discovered a large set of bookshelves with a collection of old dusty books on them. “What are those?” she wondered aloud. Neither of the two teachers knew, so Crystal made her way over to look more closely at the books. They turned out to be yearbooks from every year since the school opened. For almost an hour, Crystal, Mr. Adair, and Mrs. Jones paged slowly through the yearbooks. They joked about the old-fashioned clothes and hair in the oldest books, and they commented on some of the people they recognized. All of a sudden, Crystal knew the next feature she wanted to write. 25、The lyrebird (琴鸟) is one of Australia’s best-known birds. It has a small head and long, strong legs. Its body is dark brown or gray. The female has a long brown tail behind her but the lyrebird is remembered because of the male’s extremely beautiful tail. It has sixteen feathers and is about one metre long. The two outer feathers of the tail are golden brown and curved. This curved shape reminds people of a musical instrument — the lyre. The other surprising thing about the lyrebird is that it can copy perfectly any sound around. It can remember the songs of about twenty other kinds of birds. These days, lyrebirds have been heard copying the sounds of car alarms and crying babies!
Lyrebirds are found in wet rainforest. Because they are not great flyers, they spend most of their time on the floor where there is plenty of food. They use their strong claws to turn over rocks to find something to eat.
After growing into an adult, the male makes a space in the forest, or builds a hill, and he dances on the hill. He spreads his tail forward over his head and shakes it, jumping and moving slowly from side to side. The male sings wonderful songs. How could any female refuse his love?
The female builds her own nest in an old tree or on some rocks. It is a round nest with a hidden side entrance which helps to protect the eggs from other hungry animals. She lays a single egg and brings up her chick alone.
When in danger, lyrebirds will try to run away. They can use their wings to fly onto low trees and rocks. They also use strange sounds they can make to scare away their enemies.

A group of Chinese scientists have recently created a new kind of self-powered, flexible (柔韧的), and transparent (透明的) electronic skin (电子皮肤) to monitor some human actions. The electronic skin is a very important part in the future of wearable technology. Because it’s soft, the special e-skin can stick right onto different parts of our body.
Our skin, which is the biggest part of our body, is responsible for many important things like protecting us, helping us sweat, controlling our temperature, and letting us feel things around us. It is the basis of people’s physical interactions with the outside world.
The perfect e-skin should feel a lot, power itself, and work well on human skin. “We got ideas from how real skin works and made this new e-skin both flexible and transparent to serve many functions (功能). After charging (充电), it can watch and understand very small signals and many activities in real time. It can feel a person’s heartbeat, tell when a person is eating, and inspect other body movements.” said Lan Wei, a professor at the School of Physical Science and Technology of Lanzhou University and the leader of the research team.
E-skin will be the main part of wearable electronic devices in the following years. The new invention can be used in smart health care, human-machine interaction, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). For example, it can help doctors control the robots better, let people “touch” things far away, and create more immersive (沉浸式的) gaming experiences.
From now on, the scientists will work on making the e-skin feel things better and have more power, so it becomes even more like human skin, which will in turn make it more suitable for future.
【1】What is the purpose of the new wearable e-skin?
A.To control body temperature.
B.To monitor human activities.
C.To slow down the aging of human skin.
D.To improve the flexibility of human skin.
【2】What is special about the new e-skin according to Lan Wei?
A.It provides more electricity for people.
B.It is soft and has different kinds of uses.
C.It can be put inside the human skin directly.
D.It can feel a person’s heartbeat two minutes later.
【3】The word “inspect” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.predict
B.guess
C.check
D.replace
【4】What do the last two paragraphs mainly tell us about the new e-skin?
A.Its gaming users.

In English, “as dead as dodo” means someone or something is totally, unquestionably dead. But the dodo, stubby (矮,胖的) bird that has been extinct (灭绝的) for hundreds of years, may not be dead anymore!
US company Colossal Biosciences said it would try to bring the dodo back to life. The bird used to live on the island of Mauritius (毛里求斯) in the Indian Ocean until the 17th century.
The place to bring back the dodo would be Mauritius. Ben Lamm, the co-founder of the company told The Guardian. Bringing back dodos into the ecosystem (生态系统) of the island, instead of being a newcomer to somewhere else, is thought to bring benefits to the plants and animals that already live there.
The company has found the genetic code (基因序列) of the extinct animals from their dead bodies. It will change the DNA of currently living animals to make them close to the animal of the past. The Nicobar pigeon (尼可巴鸠) will be used as the genetic base for the dodo, according to MIT Technology Review.
The company also plans for other extinct animals, such as the mammoth (猛犸象). They believe that mammoths introduced to the Arctic (北极) could help with climate change as they turn the wet tundra (苔原) into sunlight-reflecting dry grasslands by eating the grass, according to The New Yorker.
However, some people don’t like the idea. With a third of all bird species in decline (减少), protecting today’s species is needed more than focusing on animals of the past, said BBC Science Focus.
【1】If “as dead as a dodo” is used to describe someone’s phone, it means the phone is ______.
A.lost
B.out of power
C.nice and fancy
D.hard to use
【2】Why did the company choose Mauritius as the dodos’ living place?
A.Because the island is set as a research place for new species.
B.Because dodos won’t have natural enemies on the island.
C.Because they used to live there and may benefit the ecosystem.
D.Because the island has the best ecosystem in the world.
【3】How will the company bring the dodo back?
A.By changing the closest bird’s DNA to make it similar to the dodo’s.
B.By producing dodos with DNA from their dead bodies.
C.By combining dodos’ DNA with mammoths’ DNA.
D.By changing the dead dodos’ DNA to make them reborn.
【4】According to the last paragraph, BBC Science Focus agrees that ______.
A.the number of bird species has dropped much faster than other species
B.focusing on endangered animals is more important than extinct ones
C.bringing extinct animals back to life is meaningful for today’s species
D.it is impossible to bring extinct animals back to life exactly as they were
