四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、When I was at school, I played football. When I started, I was a terrible player and nobody wanted me to be on their team. But I started to improve slowly and after a few years, the other kids in the school accepted me as a player, not a fantastic one, but one who wouldn’t do anything silly.

When I was at university, I stopped playing sports. I was studying too hard. I started eating too much, and, worst of all, I started smoking. I was too heavy and unhealthy.

Then one day, I was sitting in the park and watching people running. They looked healthy, and some of them were much older than me! At that moment, I decided to stop smoking and change my life. I went to a sports shop, bought myself a pair of running shoes, shorts and a T-shirt. That evening I went running around the park — for ten minutes! Physically, I felt terrible. Everything was hurting, my legs, my chest (胸). But inside, I felt good about it.

The next evening, I went again. I still only ran for ten minutes, but I didn’t feel as bad as I did the day before. In a week, I was running for fifteen minutes, then twenty, and after three weeks, I ran for thirty minutes without stopping. My speed was improving all the time. After six months, I was a runner!

That was five years ago. I now run eight kilometers six times a week and love it. My proudest moment was last year, when I ran my first marathon (马拉松赛跑) and finished in under three hours. I’m healthier now than I’ve ever been.

  • 25、Nearly three-quarters of Chinese households don’t have a room specifically for reading and studying. However, it doesn’t hold people back from picking up a book.

Recently, 2000 Chinese homeowners aged between 18 and 55 have been interviewed about reading. The findings of the survey show links between study rooms, the size of a house and the level of development of different Chinese cities, as well as interviewees’ reading habits and preferred reading spaces.

    Small cities, big reading spaces

While people of first-tier cities(一线城市)have plenty to be proud of, a large study room for reading is not one of them. Almost 90% of homeowners in first-tier cities reported not having a study room in the house, and the average(平均的)study area per person is only 0.26 square meters.

That size of study room remained under the one-square-meter mark in second-, third- and fourth-tier cities. While in fifth-tier cities, like Zhangjiaje in the central province of Hunan, the number reached an average of 1.01 square meters per person. In such cities, the possibility of having a study room is three times higher than that in first-tier cities.

The survey also found the bigger the house, the more chances its design will include a study room.

    No study room, no problem

But just because most Chinese apartments lack a place for reading doesn’t mean that people aren’t exercising their eyes and minds. The survey found that the interviewees spent between 500 yuan and 800 yuan on books every year.

Book-lovers are also enjoying their hobby anywhere in the house, as well as outside. Data shows that 63.6% of readers read on their way to work, 39.5% make use of their time on the toilet to catch up with their favorite book and 35.4% flip through a novel or a magazine before going to bed.

And while the majority (82.5%)still prefers to read in study rooms, many are looking outside the front door for places to enjoy the pleasure of reading, with 41.8% choosing cafes and 33.3% choosing bookstores.

    【1】What does the survey show?

A.People in China become less interested in reading.

B.Not having a study room doesn’t stop readers from reading.

C.People aged between 18 and 55 read more than the others.

D.Not having enough reading areas remains a problem in small cities.

【2】What do we know about the study rooms in first-tier cities from the passage?

A.They are five times larger than those in fifth-tier cities.

B.The average size of them is more than one square meter.

C.People in first-tier cities are proud of their study rooms.

D.People in first-tier cities are less likely to have study rooms at home.

【3】According to the report, which way of reading would most people prefer?

    A.Reading at a bookshop.

    B.Reading in study rooms.

    C.Reading before going to bed.

D.Reading on one’s way to work.

【4】The passage can best be described as a/an ________.

    A.report

    B.notice

    C.interview

    D.book review

  • 27、Almost everyone has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have shouted, “ 5-second rule!” This so–called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in five seconds or less. But is that true?

Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They found that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria(细菌) than if it sits there for longer.

For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of foods——bread, pasta, cookies and candy—to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on the different types of flooring—carpet(地毯), laminate (复合地板) and tile(瓷砖) — for three seconds to 30 seconds.

Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had. And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect. Bacteria are least likely to transfer(转移) from carpet, while they are most likely to transfer laminate or tiled surface after more than five seconds.

The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carries an infection(感染) risk. “It very much depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time.” Hilton told Forbes.

1What is the “5-second rule’ mean?

    A. People often shout at someone when they drop food on the floor.

    B. Food is safe when you pick it up off the floor in less than five seconds.

    C. It’s better to eat dropped food when it’s been on the floor for over five seconds.

    D. Food will go bad when dropped food on the floor in five seconds or less.

    2Where is Ashton University?

    A. In the USA. B. In England.

    C. In China.   D. In France.

3Hilton’s test wanted to find out____________.

    A. if the “5-second rule” is true

    B. the students’ favorite food

    C. which food is easily dropped

    D. if different types of floor have different bacteria

4According to the test, we learn the following EXCEPT ________.

    A. the dropped food had more bacteria if it sat on the floor for longer.

    B. the dropped food on the carpet had the least bacteria.

    C. bacteria was impossible to transfer from laminate or tiled surfaces.

    D. the wetter food was likely to pick up bacteria.

5According to the article, the infection risk of the dropped does NOT depend on _____________.

    A. how long the food sits on the floor

    B. what the dropped food is

    C. what the bacteria are

    D. what the weather is like that day
