  • 25、

I looked at myself in the dressing-room mirror unhappily. I was wearing a white leotard (紧身衣), and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes (雪花) in our dance in school’s Winter Wonderland show.

“Grandma, I really don’t feel like being in the show,” I said. Grandma Lani looked up from what she was making. “Why, mo‘opuna?” Mo’opuna means “grandchild” in Hawaiian. Grandma Lani has always lived in Hawaii. “You love to dance.” I used to love to dance. But Ms. Tuttle gave the lead role of the Snow Queen to Christine. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery skirt that spread out like a cloud every time she spun. And she got to do a dance on stage (舞台) all by herself. The snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a snowstorm. I sighed. “I don’t like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn’t there. There are so many of us.” “I would notice. So would your parents.” Grandma said.

As Christine walked toward us, Grandma stopped and smiled at her. “What a beautiful costume(服装)!” Christine walked away, her skirt waving behind her. I hung my head. Grandma took my hand. “What’s up?” “And you won’t be able to see me among so many snowflakes,” I whispered.

Grandma was going to speak when something outside the window caught her eye. She took my hand and my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room and through the doors to the outside. It was snowing. Grandma held her breath and I suddenly thought of something.

“Grandma, have you ever seen snow before?” “Never, mo’opuna. In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains. ”

I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently, like it was new. I saw snowflakes flying through the air in different directions, shining brightly at us. So many snowflakes came together to create something magical.

“Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. Aloha can mean many things, including “love”, “hello”, and “good-bye”. “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again.” “I do,” I said. I took Grandma Lani’s hand and pulled her back inside.

When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other snowflakes. I didn’t care if Grandma Lani could see me.

D.She found the snowflakes flying in all directions.

  • 26、In a few hours, Sam would be flying to France. We looked at each other but no sound broke the silence.

Such a moment was not the first time for me. On Sam’s first day of kindergarten, I felt his stress when holding his hand. He looked at me—as he did now. But I said nothing till the school bus came. About ten years later, I drove him to the college. He was sick but I didn’t know then. I thought he was just too tired. I tried to think of something to say as he would start a new period of life. Again, ▲ .

Sam was weak when he was born but grew into a strong boy. Then he became the best baseball player in high school. One day, I told Sam I regretted never traveling abroad to know better about the world before working. Sam decided to learn French in Paris, even though his friends thought it meaningless.

The night before he was to leave, I failed to say any words again. Maybe, I thought, it wasn’t necessary to say anything.

Does it matter if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? But as I stood before Sam, I knew it did matter.

“Sam,” I said, “If I could have picked, I would have picked you.” I wasn’t sure whether he understood what I meant. Sam came towards me and threw his arms around me, saying thank you. My eyes misted over (模糊). Then, the moment ended, and Sam left home.

That was seven weeks ago, and now I think about him when I walk along the beach. Maybe Sam is busy walking in the street of Paris.

What I had said to Sam was not new. It was nothing. But, it was everything.

【1】Which of the following can be put at the “”?

    A.his illness worried me

    B.I said goodbye to him

C.I failed to say a word

    D.his growth surprised me

【2】Sam ________ when he studied in high school.

    A.learned how to speak French

B.was a weak and stressed boy

    C.regretted not travelling abroad

    D.was very good at sports

【3】When Sam heard “if I could have picked, I would have picked you”, he might feel ________.

    A.upset

    B.relaxed

    C.calm

    D.moved

    【4】The writer is probably Sam’s ________.

    A.father

    B.mother

  • 27、   Green is an important color in nature. It is also the color of most growing plants. Sometimes the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes it describes something that is not yet ripe(成熟的) or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the eighteenth century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.

Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.

The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs.

Green is also the color used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay raise and she does not.

1From the second paragraph, we can conclude(得出结论) that .

A.a greenhorn refers to (指的是) a horn of a young cow or ox

B.a word has different meanings in the same century

C.the language develops with time going by

D.a greenhorn means a soldier who hasn't had any experience in battle today

2If a person has a green thumb, he or she probably .

A.suffers from an illness in the thumb B.does well in growing plants

C.has a thumb in green color D.has wonderful magic and energy

3If Jane has a beautiful dress that Mary likes very much, .

    A. Jane may suffer from the green-eyed monster B.Mary is probably a girl with a green thumb

    C. Jane is probably called a greenhorn. D.Mary may suffer from the green-eyed monster
