25、A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms(习语),though my teacher told us the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!”I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not a right topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was wonderful.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted(打断)again by his words: “You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “‘You don’t say’actually means ‘really!’ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.”I realized I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. 26、“Good luck!” said Tim as the children went in. It was dark inside and very cold. They looked at each other and shivered. There was water running down the walls and the children could hear someone crying. They walked towards the sound and soon they found the Lord of Tears. He was dressed in black and his head was like a skull and he was crying. The floor was wet with tears.
“Soon there will be only tears in the world,” the Lord of Tears whispered, “and I will be everywhere.” The children looked at the water around them. It was rising quickly. “Let’s play our flutes,” said Sarah. “Maybe music will stop him.” And they took out their flutes and started playing. First the tears stopped and then the Lord of Tears fell asleep. Behind the Lord of Tears’ chair they saw a mirror. Ben looked into it. He saw his smiling face. “Why are you smiling?” Sarah asked. “I’m not smiling,” he said, “the face in the mirror is smiling.”
“This must be the Mirror of Smiles,” said Sarah.
Suddenly the Lord of Tears was moving again. Sarah took the mirror and held it in front of the Lord’s face. When he opens his eyes, he looked straight into the mirror. In it the skull was smiling a terrible smile. Suddenly the children could hear empty laughter coming from the skull. The Lord of Tears laughed and laughed until his skull broke into a thousand pieces.
The next day Sarah woke up in her own bed at home. She went downstairs, where her mum was making breakfast.
“Hello, love,” her mum said with a smile.
“Morning, Sarah,” said her dad.
“Hey, listen to this joke…”
Sarah looked at her parents in surprise. “You are both smiling,” she said to them.
“Of course we’re smiling, Sarah, Why couldn’t we?” said her dad.
Sarah met Ben on the way to school. “You’ll never believe what happened at home this morning,” she said.
“Your parents were happy,” said Ben.
“How did you know?” asked Sarah.
“Mine were too. They were smiling and joking.”
“Then was it at all a dream?” asked Sarah.
“I don’t think so,” said Ben. “Look what I found in my pocket this morning.” And he showed her the black stone that Hilda had given them.
Mr. Hewitt was waiting for them in class. “You’re late,” he said in a cross voice.
“Sir,” Sarah said, “can we tell you a story?”
“What?” Mr. Hewitt said, “it’s not story time.” But then he said, “Alright!” And the children told their story.
“Great story!” all the other kids shouted.
