  • 26、   There is little rain in deserts. Because deserts are so dry, they have no "quilt" to help stop the soil from going away. As a result, they may get very hot during the day with the sun shining, but don't hold the heat overnight. Many deserts can quickly get cold once the sun goes down. Some deserts can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees F during the day and then drop below freezing (32 degrees F ) during the night.

The largest hot and dry desert in the world is the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa. The Sahara is a sandy desert with great sand hills. It covers over 3 million square miles of Africa. Other large deserts include the Arabian Desert in the middle East, the Gobi Desert in Northern China and Mongolia, and the Kalahari Desert in Africa.

Animals that live in the desert are also used to needing little water. Many get all the water they need from the food they eat. Other animals keep water that they can use later. The camel stores up fat in its hump while other animals keep something they need in their tails.

Only certain types of plants can live in the terrible environment of the desert. You won't see a lot of tall trees in the desert. Most plants have a way to keep water in their leaves, or trunks so they can live a long time without water.

Now deserts cover around 20% of the world land, but they are growing. This is called desertification and is caused by different reasons including human activities. The Sahara Desert is growing larger and larger each year. What should we do with it?

1How is the weather in deserts?

A.It's hot during the day but cold during the night.

B.It's cold during the day but hot during the night

C.It's hot both during the day and during the night

D.It's cold both during the day and during the night.

2How many large deserts in Africa are mentioned in the text?

    A.One B.Two C.Three D.Four

3Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Animals that live in deserts don't need any water at all.

B.All animals in deserts get water from the food they eat.

C.All animals living in deserts store up fat in their humps.

D.Some animals keep something they need in their tails.

4What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A.The weather in deserts. B.The animals in deserts

C.The plants in deserts. D.Large deserts in the world

5The underlined word "they" in Paragraph 5 refers to"_________".

    A.the world's land B.human activities

C.different reasons D.deserts in the world

A book cover that attracts you to read, an app that keeps you exercising, a search engine that is easy to use… these all need good design. Good design makes our lives easier and better. But what makes good design?

Fortune magazine recently published a list of the 100 greatest designs of modern times. The list shows a clear change in design idea over the past years, according to Fortune. In the 1950s, design mostly referred to the aesthetics of a product, such as the beautiful design of a sports car. But today, the key point is how it can solve problems and change society in a good way.

One example is the Chinese app WeChat. It offers many kinds of functions, including messaging, video calling and online payment. It's a "one-stop shop" that makes our life much easier.

Mobike is also on the list. In big cities, many people have to travel a long way between the bus or subway stop and their homes or offices. Thanks to China's Mobike, people can solve the "last mile" problem by riding bikes, Fortune said. Mobike's bikeshare service allows people to find a bike almost anywhere in most Chinese cities. Its online payment allows people to easily open a bike lock with a smartphone.

Here is another great design called OXO Good Grips Peeler. This peeler was designed by American designer Sam Farber in 1990. When he found that his wife had trouble holding her peeler because of the hurt of her arm, Sam decided to create a more useful tool that would benefit everyone. The peeler has a wide handle that is easy to hold and control. He also used a special material to make the handle, which is soft to the touch and non-slip even when it gets wet.

1A good design today is surely________.

    A.useful B.famous C.expensive D.beautiful

2The underlined word“one-stop shop" in Paragraph Three means________.

A.a shop with a stop B.a shop with lots of services

C.an app for users of all ages D.an app with plenty of functions

3Why might office workers like Mobike?

A.They can share bikes with others. B.Mobike is easy for a short ride.

C.Mobike is safe because of the bike lock. D.It's cheap to pay for Mobike online.

4Sam Farber's design is mentioned to show that a new design may appear when________.

A.people want to be modem. B.people meet some problems.

C.people need some knowledge. D.people hope their lives become colorful.
