    73. People often wonder why historians go to so much trouble to preserve millions of books, documents and records.

Why do we have libraries? 74.What good are these documents and history books? Why do we record and save the actions of men, the negotiations1 of government officials and the events during wars?

75.We do it because, sometimes, the voice of experience can cause us to stop, look and listen. Sometimes, past records, when understood in the right way, can help us decide what to do and what not to do. If we are ever to create lasting peace, we must seek its origins in human experience and in the records of human history.

  • 25、Daniel Olin was 11 years old when his parents moved to Canada. He liked his new school and made friends there, but then things at home started to change. His mum and dad began to argue and the arguments got worse and worse until one day, Daniel's mum left. With his father working long hours, Daniel felt very lonely and very unhappy. He wanted to escape, to run away. And that's what he did.

Very early one terribly cold morning when the snow was deep on the ground, he packed a bag with some clothes, some chocolate and a map of Canada and set off to a forest. He ran and ran until he could hardly breathe. His feet were heavy with the snow but he still walked on through deep snow, not even watching where he was going.

Then, disaster struck. A rock hidden by the deep snow caught his feet and Daniel fell to the ground. He had broken the bone. He was very cold and was starting to feel tired, but he knew that if he fell asleep in the snow, he would certainly die from the cold.

A tree shook ahead. From within the branches(树枝), a pair of yellow eyes watched Daniel. The puma had been following him. A puma is a large wild cat with claws that could tear(撕开) Daniel into pieces. But instead of moving in for the kill, the puma walked up to Daniel and lay across his chest, arms and legs. Daniel was too frightened to move, but soon the warmth of the animal reached Daniel and he began to feel better. From time to time, the puma pressed his muzzle (口鼻) against Daniel and rocked his head gently. Clearly, the puma knew that Daniel must not fall asleep. • 27、   We interviewed singer Maisie Peters after she gave a private show at Atlantic Records in Manhattan, New York. We had a lot of fun chatting with her — we even got to sing with her!

Q: At what age did you start singing and playing the guitar, and do you play other instruments?

A: I think I started singing probably when I was 8 in a singing club. When I started playing the guitar, I was 12 or 13 years old. Actually, I played the guitar at first. I played it during my whole elementary school period, but I was so bad. My twin sister at that time played the clarinet. We were both equally awful. So my poor parents had to listen to terrible noises. Then I gave that up.

Q: How do you remember the words to your songs?

A: I sing them a lot. I guess when you do anything a lot, it’s just easier to remember. You just have to practice all the time. Before I go on stage, I sing all the words under my breath. I still forget words sometimes, which is embarrassing. But you get over it and it’s fine.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a singer?

A: If you’re going to be a singer, put yourself out there as much as you can. It’s pretty easy to do that nowadays with social media and YouTube. And that’s how I got started. And when you’re my age ... you feel like you’ve got the best stuff to present. You can start a career on your own nowadays. You don’t need anyone to help you with that. So just put yourself out there.

【1】What instrument does Maisie Peters play? ______.

    A.Guitar.

    B.Flute.

    C.Clarinet.

    D.Piano.

【2】According to Peters, singing songs under her breath ______.

A.can help her remember the words to her songs every time

B.helps her feel less embarrassed when she makes mistakes

C.helps her prepare herself before going on stage

D.successfully makes her get over all difficulties

【3】Which of the following is a suggestion from Peters? ______.

A.It is important to find someone to help you start your career

B.You can start your career online on your own

C.Young people should start to work as early as possible

D.It is pretty easy to become famous nowadays
