24、 The British love word-play and they’re enthusiastic about protecting the use of their language. In recent years, books about the grammar, pronunciation and punctuation (标点) of English have been written by the dozen, and sold extremely well, reflecting people’s love of the English language. People want to protect the “correct” use of their language, but also to keep its ability to develop along with society. Lynne Truss’s book Eats, Shoots & Leaves is an excellent example of these two opposite ideas. Its title shows the way that punctuation can change meaning in a sentence. “Eats shoots and leaves” is a perfectly normal description of a panda’s diet: he eats the shoots(嫩芽) and leaves of bamboo trees. But the position of the comma (逗号) turns those nouns into verbs, and makes up a ridiculous little story: the panda eats (his dinner), he shoots (a gun), and he leaves (the building). It’s a silly joke, but it shows how changing something as simple as a comma can change the entire meaning of a sentence.
Published in 2003, Eats, Shoots & Leaves was an unexpectedly huge success. It is easy to assume the typical reader of this kind of book as the humourless type. However, the book has sold thousands and thousands of copies—it must be attractive to a wide range of people. The book’s winning secret is this: it makes some serious points about language and punctuation, but also has an amusing aspect, and uses stories and jokes to show its points. It has invited some tough criticism, too, especially from the US. On a broader range, Eats, Shoots & Leaves has opened up a lot of public argument on Truss’s ideas. Whether they agree with her or not, punctuation and grammar has become a popular topic to discuss.
In every generation there will be people who think that the standard of language is dropping, and who are more than happy to write to the newspapers to express their concern and opinions. Truss’s book also interest those who think that texting and blogging (博客) is lowering the standard of literacy(读写能力). Whether the standard of the English language is decreasing, or simply evolving into new forms, the success of Eats, Shoots & Leaves proves that this is a subject that many English speakers find interesting and important.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The English language was better in the past.
B. The English language is being improved by technology.
C. There is often dissatisfaction with the standard of English.
D. There have always been arguments on the use of punctuation.
25、Here are some of the different technologies used in 24 Beijing Winter Olympics.
At the Winter Olympic Village, the athletes were sleeping on “smart beds” equipped (装备) with sensors (传感器). They collected information on things like breathing and heart rates. They also let users choose different sleeping positions, including one called “zero gravity.” That setting is supposed to reduce pressure on muscles (肌肉) and joints (关节) and support higher-quality sleep.
Robots had been deployed (部署) to help visitors and athletes. Some machines were being used to keep social distancing (距离) requirements related to COVID-19. Robots were also transporting equipment, cleaning surfaces and preparing and carrying food to limit human-to-human contact. “Smart” waste containers (容器) were also used, as well as machines that can make and serve wine and coffee.
China’s digital money was in use at the Olympics in the currency’s (货币的) first major test with foreigners. Visitors would be able to use digital yuan to pay for food, transportation and other goods and services. 26、Some people love going to museums, while others absolutely hate it and would rather stay at home, enjoying their favorite TV shows.Increasingly, museums are being seen as outdated and boring by today's youngsters.I have just returned to the UK after travelling around the USA. While there,I visited lots of museums I must say, museums are typically educational, either to develop knowledge gained at school in particular subjects,or to enhance knowledge of other cultures
In Chicago,we visited the world-famous Art Institute of Chicago. It was filled with paintings, drawings and sculptures by a huge variety of artists, such as Picasso,Monet,Matisse and Dali.
There was a mixture of traditional and modern art, including colorful stained glass windows and abstract art.
When we were in Washington D. C. ,we visited a few of the Smithsonian museums. These are all free to visit-which is great if you just want to see a few things, and not spend all day inside.
The Air and Space Museum was particularly good:it had lots of aircrafts and rockets on display, interesting information and also some interactive parts. We also went to the National U.S.Holocaust(纳粹大屠杀)Memorial Museum.Naturally,it was sad to read about the horrors of this tragedy which affected so many people in World War II.However,it was also incredibly interesting to read the stories of those who survived the Holocaust,as well as those who helped others.
Last but not least,I also found the 9/11 Memorial and Museum to be of great interest. This museum is dedicated to those who lost their lives,as well as their families, when the Twin Towers in New York City were attacked by terrorists in 2001It tells you how the terrorists planned the attack, how they hijacked the planes, and ultimately what happened as a result of their actions.Surviving pieces of the towers are shown in the museum, alongside damaged fire engines. It was a truly thought-provoking visit, which made me value my own life that little bit more.
I think museums play an important role in preserving artifacts of historical importance for future generations.Whatever your interests, there is likely to be a museum for you.You can visit waxwork museums to see models of your favorite celebrities(and get photos with the Queen!),science museums for a more hands-on,interactive visit and so much more!Best of all,if you're ever in the UK,many of them are free!
