24、Parking has been a problem for drivers for a long time in most cities in China. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are about 100 thousand cars on the road in a medium-sized city but only enough parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.
The number of the private car owners is becoming larger and larger. A medium-sized city sometimes sends out about 1, 000 private car licenses in a month. Industry experts say this suggests that people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.
By the year 2016, the number of private cars in China reached about 150 million. If one parking lot is for one car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles. The center of most cities is short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in these areas is not practical and doesn’t solve the problem.
The idea of a “Park &Ride” system has been suggested. This means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. Drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks nearby subway and bus stations and then they can ride public transport to go to the city center. Based on this idea, the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city center and charge higher parking fees. But it will build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.

26、 Are you an eating-lover? Do you want to eat every delicious food in the world? Then do you watch the popular program A Bite of China? It’s a TV program on Chinese delicious food which has been produced by CCTV. Is there any holiday that isn’t celebrated with special festival food? Here are several traditional Chinese foods:
Noodles are a symbol of long life in Chinese culture. They are as much a part of Chinese birthday celebration as a birthday cake with its candles lit in many western countries. Since noodles mean long life, it is considered very unlucky to cut it off.
Although westerners sometimes may be very sorry to see fish lying on the plate, in China a whole fish is a symbol of richness. In fact, at a party it is a tradition to serve the whole fish last, pointed towards the most valued guest. Fish also has a special meaning because the Chinese word for fish, yu, sounds like the word for richness or plenty, and it is believed that eating fish will help your wishes come true in the year to come.

27、Mount Qomolangma stands as the world’s highest mountain. At a height of 8848.86 meters, it must be free of plastics wastes, isn’t it? The answer might disappoint you.
Last year, scientists collected 11 snow samples (样本) on Qomolangma, starting from 5,300 meters all the way up to its top. They found microplastics (塑料微颗粒) in all of them. The sample with the most microplastics was collected around Base Camp. It is the place where climbers spend the most time. Scientists think the microplastics came from the clothing, tents and ropes that were used by mountaineers.
The new research was led by Imogen Napper. “I have always considered Mr. Qomolangma a pure place,” she said. “It really surprised me to find microplastics in every single snow sample.”
In 2018, plastic was discovered at the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on earth. It is now clear that no place on our planet is safe from plastic pollution.
Millions of tons of plastics are thrown into the natural environment every year. Over time, plastic waste breaks down into microplastics. Microplastic pollution is less than 5mm in size. It is too small to be picked up. Plastic waste carries harmful substances (物质). Wild animals suffer as they mistake the waste for food. People also take in microplastics through food and water, and breathe them in. It is still unknown how microplastics may influence human health.
Napper said it was time to care for our planet. It was important to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste, she added. Besides, many microplastics come from clothing made of unnatural materials. Napper said a focus (重点) on better materials was needed. Whenever possible, we should use natural material such as cotton.

29、 Every culture has set rules about how people should act. Patterns of good behavior, or manners, show respect and care for others. Yet the details of _____to express respect are so different.
Greeting people cheerfully is almost always considered polite. But it's more important in some cultures than others. For example, when you enter a store in France, you should always greet the person working there. Other cultures also _____greeting people. But of course the greetings vary as people speak different languages.
When I was growing up in the United States, I once took part in a performance at my church. Afterwards, someone gave me compliment, but I felt like I had done a bad job. So I tried to refuse the compliment, saying "No, I didn't do that well." My mother stopped me and told me that was very _____. Later I learned that refusing a compliment is accepted in China.
Some of the biggest cultural differences have to do with _____. In North America, it's polite to eat as quietly as possible. That means chewing with your mouth closed and not slurping your soup. The same goes for burping(打嗝). But in parts of Asia, slurping shows that you are enjoying your meal. And burping is a sign of being full and content.
There are also differences in how people eat across cultures. _____, in North America and Europe people use forks to bring food to their mouths. But in Thailand, a fork is only used to push food onto a spoon. In India and the Middle East, people eat with their hands. But eating with the left hand is frowned upon. This is because the left hand is considered unclean.
Yet there are also similar points across cultures. Saying "please" and "thank you" is almost always polite. If you show appreciation and try to _____local customs, people will generally respond well. Showing kindness can bring people together, no matter what culture they come from.
