  • 26、It was my first full-time job as a teacher in a high school in Riverside, California. The Department Chair told me that I would teach a writing class. I felt very confident.

It was my first class. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised. These kids looked too tall and mature(成熟的)to be high school students! I still didn’t have a list of names, so I started by talking with them and asking questions. Everything was fine until I noticed a tall boy eating a piece of cake. Rule 1, clearly written on the board, was “NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS”. I got a little mad and asked him to read the rule out aloud. He did so and he got mad too!

I asked him, “Did you understand what you read?” This made him even madder.

    “Yes, I did.”

“Well, then, what were you doing just now?”

“I was eating a piece of cake,” he looked at me angrily.

“Well, get up, go outside and throw the cake away.”

And then both of us made a mistake. He said, “Here, I don’t even want it.” Then he put the piece of cake in my hand. The icing(糖衣)of the cake went among my fingers, making a real mess. I was so mad that I hit the cake on his hair!

The class started laughing and clapping. Somebody got up, went to the board and wrote “Teacher - 1; Mark - 0”. I didn’t know whether I was supposed to laugh or not, but I couldn’t help it. And then, Mark got up and left.

The story was all over the school later. Some students came to me and said, “I hear that terrible things will happen if somebody tries to eat cake in your class!” Oh, how embarrassing!

Now I still teach, but I’m much better at dealing with students.

  • 27、   Have you ever had trouble trying to choose a gift? Perhaps you need a birthday present for someone who is hard to please. How about clothing? You might be worried about choosing the wrong size, color, or style. Books or DVDs? You may not know enough about the person’s likes, dislikes, and interests. And giving money may not seem right. Well, how about a gift card?

A gift card is a card that is issued (发行) by a certain store. It’s worth a certain amount money. It looks like a credit card (信用卡), but it actually works like cash. A gift-card holder can spend the amount of money noted on the card in the store that issued it. These cards are big money makers. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they often see other            things to buy, and they end up spending more money than the gift card is worth.

Gift cards are becoming popular in many countries around the world. Why? Cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The receiver can select his or her own gift, and the giver doesn’t have to worry about finding just the right thing.

Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. An actual gift can better remind us of the giver’s thought and effort that went into the choice. The message of a real gift is more likely to be, “I spent some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you.”

Often a gift card doesn’t pass on the same message as an actual gift. It may seem to say, “I was in a hurry. I didn’t have time to think about what you really like.” In today’s busy world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving gifts, which is to build a closer bond relationship between the gift-giver and the gift-receiver.

【1】The first paragraph is used to _______.

    A.introduce the main topic

    B.show the writer’s attitude

C.describe how to choose a gift

D.explain how to use a gift card

【2】What do we know about gift cards?

A.They are the same as credit cards.

B.They help stores earn much money.

C.They bring more customers to stores.

D.They are worth more money than they cost.

【3】What is the advantage of giving an actual gift?

A.It is liked by the receivers.

B.It reminds people of their interests.

C.It shows the giver’s thought and effort.

D.It passes on more messages about the receivers.

【4】The last paragraph mainly talks about _______.

A.the real purpose of giving gifts

    B.the disadvantage of gift cards.

C.the relationship between gift cards and actual gifts.

    D.the relationship between the gift-giver and gift-receiver.
