24、Alone in Antarctica (南极)
By Helen Thayer
At the age of 50, I was the first woman to travel alone at the North Pole. But what should I do to celebrate my 60th birthday? What else, but a journey at the opposite end of the world, Antarctica. I began my almost 400-mile journey on November 1st, 1997. I walked and skied alone. My dog team were not with me to pull my sled. Another journey of challenge and danger was about to begin.
The first days the weather was very good. The wind was icy but not very strong and there was bright sunshine 24 hours a day. But changes were just around the corner. On the third day I was struggling through stormy weather and during the next week the wind grew stronger and I found myself spending a whole day in my tent.
I had travelled only two hours one day when the winds increased so much that I had to put my tent up before the winds became too strong. Within a few minutes the winds increased to a terrible storm that threatened to blow me and my tent away, but none of that happened.
On November 12th the storm died down. It was my birthday and I wanted to make that day special. I melted a frozen cake over my fire, placed a candle on the top, lit it and sang “Happy birthday to me” at the top of my voice.
A few days later, I was moving forward over a slope that seemed safe when suddenly without warning my world dropped out from under my skis. I had fallen into a hole and was hanging on the ropes tied to the sled (雪橇) . A piece of ice fell down and I never heard it land. I used to practice self-rescue many times in the mountains where I lived. I carefully began climbing out. It took a long time but I finally got out. I was thankful for all the training I had had.
I was in good health and all my equipment was working well. I was so optimistic that I decided that the next day, the 22nd day of the journey, I would increase my workday to 12 hours.
The next morning I had a bad accident with the sled and hurt my leg. I couldn't stand on my left leg and my head was woozy from hitting the ground. But I knew that I had to get up. Lying on the ice, I would soon die. I struggled to my knees knowing that somehow I had to put my tent up for shelter. On hands and knees I got the tent up and dragged my sleeping bag into the tent and lay down out of the cold wind.
I had to make a decision. Wait to get better or give up? I had to think of my family, which is more important than my personal achievement, and do the right thing. I did so without regret. I had met the challenges of sole travel in a bad climate. It is an experience I shall never forget and shall value for the rest of my life.

26、 Betty was familiar with Hopelink's Carnation food bank, but that didn't make it easier for her to take that first step inside when she found herself needing help a few years ago.
"I sat out in the car for a long time before I finally went in," Betty says. "But I knew I had to do it."
Betty and her husband lived together happily. When her husband passed away in 2008, everything changed. Soon, Betty realized she needed to ask for help.
"When Dave was still alive, I never thought it would happen," she says. "I never really thought I would have to go to a food bank. I thought I'd be able to keep my job longer, and I thought we'd have more money to save."
Things didn't work out that way. And finally, Betty found herself in need of help, sitting in her car outside Hopelink, working up the courage to take that first step.
Once inside, she felt welcome immediately.
"A dear lady – I think she was a volunteer – came up to me, and whether she saw that I was scared … I think so; I feel that way," Betty says. "And she said, 'you know, there's a lot of us that have to come here.' And I went into the food bank, and it was wonderful. I learned there were other people having a hard time … it wasn't just me."
Betty started visiting the food bank twice a month, and began to look forward to it. It gave her a chance to get out of the house and dress up a bit – often in her favorite color pink – and meet other people and check in with the regular volunteers.
While Hopelink has helped Betty stay healthy and independent in her later years, it's knowing that someone cares that means the most.
"I appreciate Hopelink, I really do," Betty says. "They've helped me in a million ways since Dave died. And without them, I don't know what I would do. Without the food bank, I'm not sure I could make it. I know I couldn't."
Since 1971, Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families and individuals in King and Snohomish counties; providing stability (稳定) and helping people get the skills and knowledge they need to exit poverty for good.

27、Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings. In August, it's hot and wet in the southern part of the USA. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the middle-west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold sometimes. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 study by scientists showed that the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often do worse on exams in the hot months of the year(July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But big people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18°C, people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is "good weather" for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18°C.
Are you feeling sad, tired or forgetful today? It may be the weather's fault.
