When he was 24 years old, Qian went to America for further study. After graduation, he worked in America for a few years, where his working conditions were better. In the early 1950s, he heard New China had been founded  and decided not to stay in America any longer. He succeeded in coming back to his motherland in 1955 though the American government tried to stop him.

Mr. Qian has been dead for ten years, but he will live in the memory of Chinese people forever.

In 2014, he started up his own Internet company. However, the business only lasted about a year. That was when he decided to take a break and travel around the country, hoping it could bring him some ideas about what to do next.

He joined an extreme budget travel program, where most of the travelers tried to keep costs on the road as low as possible. “We could take a free ride offered by drivers going our way, and provide such services as taking photos for a hotel in exchange for a night’s accommodation,” he explains. During his travels, Li made videos and documentaries and posted them online, attracting 500,000 fans on Douyin, and 900,000 fans on Kuaishou.

  • 26、   When you see flowers for sale, do you ever think of how they got from where they were grown? In most cases, they were grown in another country and imported to a big market in the Netherlands (荷兰),which sells 80 percent of the flowers and plants in the world. After they are traded there, they are exported again by plane all over the world.  Eventually, they come to your town or city.

Since the 1500s Netherlands has been famous for growing and selling plants. In 1592,the first tulip (郁金香)bulb was imported to Netherlands from Turkey and tulips quickly caught on. As a matter of fact, some people struck it rich with tulips. Just one tulip bulb was worth as much as a house in Amsterdam!

These days, the nation is still famous for its tulips and many other kinds of flowers as well. Many kinds of flowers are grown in greenhouses that are heated and lit so it's summer all year inside. In addition, millions of flowers arrive by plane every day at Amsterdam Airport. The center of the flower industry is the Aalsmeer Flower Auction located near the airport, about 16 kilometers from downtown Amsterdam. Every year, three billion flowers and 400 million plants are traded here. They come from 8,000 growers in places like Kenya, Ecuador and Indonesia.  In an auction, buyers try to get the best flowers for the lowest prices so they can make a profit. At Aalsmeer, the prices start high and decrease. You have to watch out because it happens very quickly. The first person to press a button gets the plants at that price. As a rule, it only takes seconds to sell bunches of flowers, especially those in high demand.  six hundred groups are sold each hour, so you have to decide what price you will payin a hurry. As soon as beautiful roses catch your eye, you must act. The next time you admire a bunch of roses, think about the adventure that the flowers have had.  Where they came from may remain a mystery, but they almost certainly had a brief stop at Aalsmeer.

1What do we know about Netherlands from Paragraph 1?

3Which fact about greenhouses is true?

A.People sells flowers in them. B.Flowers can grow at a good temperature.

C.They are only used in winter. D.They are only used to grow tulips.

A.3 billion flowers and 400 million plants are traded in Kenya, Ecuador, and Indonesia.

C.Buyers may miss getting the flowers they want if they can't make a quick decision.

D.The prices of the flowers in Aalsmeer are higher than those in other cities.

5Which is the best title for this passage?

  • 27、When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of (感到难为情) my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her Chinese English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother realized that she was poor at English. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was made to ask for information or even to shout at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker(股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent(青少年的) voice that was not very certain, “This is Mrs. Tan.” My mother was standing beside me saying, “Why he doesn’t send me check, already two weeks late.” And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather worried. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” My mother then talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York to tell him in front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed(令人尴尬) me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped me see things, express ideas, and make sense of the world.
