27、 People in Mayilattumpara,a village in southwest India, could not sleep at night. Because of habitat loss, wild elephants would enter their village to look for food, destroying crops and farmland.
The villagers tried to keep the wild elephants out with electric fences(电网),deep holes and plants believed to keep the animals away. They even tried beating drums(鼓),but nothing worked!
The repeated damage of crops led some villagers to stop farming. Luckily, last year villagers found what keeps the elephants away: honey bees. Elephants are afraid of loudly buzzing bees and their stings(蛰).
An electric fence holding beehives(蜂巢)now runs along the border of the village. When elephants try to pass the 2. 5 kilometers electric fence, angry bees fly out and the elephants quickly run away. Protected by the bees, farmers have returned to growing their crops.
Roy works for Agriculture Technology Management Agency. He said the idea for the fence came from the work of an Oxford University researcher(研究者),Lucy King. In 2008,Lucy successfully tested whether honeybees would keep elephants away from areas in Kenya. Researchers in Tanzania had the same success. So,Roy worked with the farmers in Mayilattumpara to start the experiment.
Setting up the fence and beehives in a large farmland was not easy. The farmers needed to learn how to care for the bees and deal with the cost of keeping up the system. The results of this experiment have encouraged farmers from other areas to try similar projects. The officials also have been working to deal with trouble between humans and elephants by improving the elephants' natural habitat.

28、 In 2009 a group of parents in Lymington started sharing worries about their children’s money-management skills. Pocket money was now stored in a building society rather than a piggy bank (储蓄罐); household shopping was done online; the children rarely saw their parents handling cash. They were spending online, too. Money had become intangible. How, then, were children to learn its value?
The answer they came up with was GoHenry, an app now available in America as well as Britain. It is designed to help young people learn good spending habits through real-world money activities. Parents sign up with their own bank accounts and pay a monthly fee of £2.99 or $3.99 for each child aged six or over. Adults and children download separate versions. Parents can schedule pocket money and set chores. When those are marked as done, the child is paid the agreed amount. Parents can see what the child has bought and where. And they can choose where the card can be used: in shops, online or at ATMs.
Children get cards printed with their name. They can put money in savings pots, view their spending and balances, and set savings targets. “They could decide to save ten dollars for a friend’s birthday in four weeks’ time, or set a goal at 12 to have $2,000 to buy a car at age 18,” says Dean Brauer, one of GoHenry’s founders. “The app tells them how much to save each week to meet their goal.”
A big benefit of such apps is that they inspire family conversations about money. According to the latest research, more than half of British parents find the subject hard to discuss with their children. And yet most agree that children’s attitudes to money are formed in their early years.
Some GoHenry customers are wealthy parents who worry that their children will grow up with little knowledge of money. Others have slim incomes but regard the app as a preparation for their child’s future. Some say that they have been in debt and want their children to avoid that mistake when they grow up; others that the app is cost-effective because their children learn to plan spending. Even though young people no longer touch and hold money, they can still be taught to handle it well.
【1】What does the underlined sentence suggest?
A.Money no longer existed physically. B.Money was spent by children.
C.Money took on a fashionable look. D.Money became less valuable.
【2】What is the purpose of GoHenry app?
A.To update people’s idea of money.
B.To educate kids on money management.
C.To promote parent-kid relationship.
D.To build up wealth in American families.
【3】How do parents or children benefit from GoHenry?
A.Parents monitor children’s using of money.
B.Children have freedom to earn extra money.
C.Parents lend much money to children in relief.
D.Children turn to saving instead of spending.

A.It brings to the table the topic of money.
B.It trains kids to deal with money wisely.
C.It ensures a successful future for children.
D.It makes it possible for kids to get wealthy.
29、Not long ago, Egypt marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Suez Canal. The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的)non-native species (物种). Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.
The number of non-native creatures has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015. The “New Suez Canal” has raised concerns in Europe and brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries. Bella Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She says much of the ecological(生态的)damage cannot be repaired. She said urgent action is needed to ease the effects of the invasive fish and other sea life.
Galil works at Tel Aviv University’s Steinhardt Museum of Natural History. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal has created a “moving aquarium” of species. These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings. Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400. That is twice the number 30 years ago. She said this is a “historic example of the dangers of unintended consequences.”
Israel is now dealing with huge numbers of poisonous(有毒的) jellyfish that affect coastal power centers and keep people from visiting the seashore. Other poisonous species, such as the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, are also appearing.
Galil said the problems of invasive species can be compared to those of climate change, pollution and over-fishing. She argues that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the environment. This has endangered native species.
Some experts have suggested that increasing salt levels in the canal itself could create a barrier(障碍物) that would keep invasive species out.
【1】What lesson can we learn from the effects of the Suez Canal?
A.Seeing is believing.
B.Every coin has two sides.
C.Let nature take its course.
D.Everyone makes mistakes.
【2】What’s the attitude of many Mediterranean countries towards the“New Suez Canal"?
A.Uncaring.
B.Unclear.
C.Supportive.
D.Against.
【3】What is the ecological environment like after the Suez Canal reconstruction?
A.It is from bad to worse.
B.It remains the same.
C.It improves a great deal.
D.It has become a completely new one.
【4】Why did Galil mention climate change, pollution and over-fishing in paragraph 5?
A.To add some background information.
B.To stress the harm of invasive species.
C.To solve the problem of invasive species.
D.To compare their similarities and differences.
30、 The famous American inventor Thomas Alva Edison once claimed that genius was one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration(汗水). Now, it seems, there is scientific evidence to _______ his claim. The idea that geniuses such as Shakespeare, Mozart, and Picasso possessed certain inborn talents is a false belief, according to a study by a British psychologist and his colleagues.
After examining outstanding performance in the arts and sports, these researchers concluded that _______ is determined by opportunity, encouragement, training, motivation, self-confidence, and — most important of all —_______ Even people who were not thought to be _______ with any special talent could, after having received training, reach levels _______ considered attainable (可获得的) only by gifted individuals. Talent is a false belief, and it is time that people got rid of it, they said.
This theory — a dramatic _______ with traditional beliefs — has been _______ by academics worldwide. In fact, studies of accomplished artists and mathematicians, and top tennis players and swimmers, have reported few early signs of _______ in these people before any parental encouragement. No case has been found of anyone reaching the highest levels of achievement without _______ himself or herself to thousands of hours of serious training. Even those who are believed to be exceptionally talented — whether in music, mathematics, chess, or sports — have needed lengthy periods of instruction and practice to achieve their highest level of success. The persistent false belief that some people reach high levels of performance without spending numerous hours practicing __________ much to the fact that their practice is usually outside the casual observer’s view, stated one scientist.
The importance of practice has been noticed in athletics. For instance, differences in the composition of certain muscles were once thought to be __________ predictors of athletic performance. However, the differences in the proportion of certain muscle fibers(组织) that are __________ for success in long-distance running are largely the result of extended practice in running.
“What makes a genius then?” one may ask. __________ , there is no clear answer. What is known, however, is that nurture is at least as important as nature? __________, a supportive environment will do far more for a child’s prospects of success than any inborn gifts. This is a message that most of us will find __________ — even if we haven’t won the gene lottery, our fate is still in our own hands.
